Student Handbook - Academic Year 2013/2014 The Department of Human Resource Management was established in 1995. Since then Department of Human Resource Management has gone from strength to strength offering its undergraduates the Bachelor of Business Management (Special) Degree in Human Resource. This degree comprises of all the major course units relating to contemporary Human Resource Management practices and four month Internship programme. The Department currently accommodates over 400 students. The Department s vision is to provide Human Resource Management Graduates with knowledge, skills and attitudes for addressing the demand of the job market and for the development of the country. The curriculum is restructured regularly with a vision to incorporate a knowledge based study and action learning, continuous competence enhancement, business practicality and disciplinary rigor. This is not simply a place of knowledge dissemination but it focuses on molding potential managers and corporate leaders through the internship programme and other enhanced opportunities for talent acquisition. It has launched the bi-annual publication Kelaniya Journal of Human Resource Management, first of its kind by an academic department of the faculty. It is a forum for intellectuals, providing opportunity for integration of diverse perspectives in business social realities and has earned increased recognition from both industry and academia. The Degree commenced in 1999 and the number of students registered for the Degree has been gradually increased each year. The Department launched the Postgraduate Diploma in HRM in 2006 with the objective of developing specialist knowledge and expertise in both managers from the industry and in academicians. In year 2010, Diploma programme was promoted to a Master programme. The department publishes the first and only refereed journal in Human Resource Management, namely, Kelaniya Journal of Human Resource Management, from 2006, as a bi-annual journal. 35
Student Handbook - Academic Year 2013/2014 In keeping it place as the pioneer educator in Human Resource Management in the Sri Lankan university system, the department introduced the Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management programs in 2014 for those who are not eligible for university education. These two programs intend to provide these drop out students an opportunity to pursue higher education in the field of HRM. Those who complete these programs successfully, will be eligible to read for B.B. Mgt. (General) external degree, and then the Postgraduate Diploma (PDHRM) and Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM) programs of the Department. 36
