Fall 2005 Needs Assessment: Registered s and Vocational s Prepared by: Sunnary T. Adeva FA05: Needs Assessment-RNs and LVNs Institutional Research Chaffey College Reviewed by: Jim Fillpot 20051209 Revised: 20060105

I. Nursing (Registered s and Licensed Vocational s): Background Information: A.) Registered s: Like the rest of the nation, California is experiencing a Registered s (RNs) shortage that is expected to widen in the next two decades. The supply of RNs is not keeping up with the demand. The current capacity of California s education and training institutions to graduate RNs and LVNs does not meet California s needs. Over 50 percent of RNs licensed in 2001-02 came from other states or countries. Registered s (RN) constitute the largest group among all health occupations. Most RNs work in acute care hospitals as hospitals nurses. They care for patients at the hospital bedside, in private clinics, and in the patient s home. s may also work to help prevent disease, educate the public about health issues, enhance public health, and to support ill patients both physically and mentally. They assess patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records. B.) Vocational s: Licensed Vocational s (LVN) are an important member of a health team. Under the supervision of doctors and registered nurses, LVNs must report changes in patient s condition. Licensed Vocational s perform tasks such as administering specified medication, orally or by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection, and noting time and amount on patients charts, performing basic patient assessment and report unfavorable reactions to medication or treatment to nurse or doctor, and assembling and using such equipments as: -catheters -tracheotomy tubes -oxygen suppliers Nationwide, about 13 percent of all wage and salary jobs created between 2000 and 2010 will be in the health service industry. II. Employment Outlook: A.) Registered s: The Labor Market Information Division (LMID) and the Employment Development Department (EDD) estimates that the number of Registered s in California by the year 2010 will be 250,400 more nurses. The State Board of Registered s reports that there were about 250,000 licensed RNs in California in 2001. Despite the large number, shortages still exist and shortages are expected to occur over the next 10 years. This is due to workers leaving and re-entering several times during their career. However, hospitals and clinics continue to have ongoing, active recruitment programs, some offering unique benefits to attract applicants. 2

B.) Vocational s: According to the California Occupational Guide LVN occupations will grow faster than average compared with all occupations in California. The Labor Market Information Division and the Employment Development Department estimates that the number of Licensed Vocational s will grow by 27,100 by the year 2012. Expected growth in employment of LVNs is in response to the long-term care needs of a rapidly growing elderly population and the general growth of healthcare. Nursing homes will offer the most new jobs for LVNs as the number of aged and disabled people in need of long-term care increases. Earning Potential: A.) Registered s: Table 1.1 below shows the median hourly wages for Registered s in three counties taken from the Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) survey. 1 Table 1.2 also indicates the current number of Registered s employed in San Bernardino County.
