So, what is cloud computing?

Two mainconceptions: The Broad Outsourced The Narrow Cloud the storing, processing and use of data on remotely located computersaccessed over the internet. Computing as a contracted service negotiated beforehand with external hosts, with SLAsetc. Outsourcing computing capability. the storing, processing and use of data on remotely located computers... which allow on demand selfservice, rapid elasticity and scaling, and metered usage (NIST) Computing as a utility access / release computing capability from a Cloud Service Provider (CSP). The electricity analogy.

Lots of common features: Both types outsourced and cloud eliminate detailed management concerns Both types can make use of data centres with economies of scale Sometimes dedicated, sometimes a colocation centre or coloc Microsoft expands Dublin bit barn to slurp Euro Data Major expansion for data morgue

Both types of service can provide IaaS and PaaS (more in a bit) Both types of service present tempting, often high profile targets for those who want to steal data Both types of service can provide redundant storage, though this is often less transparent with cloud than outsourced computing But there is a fundamental difference in responsiveness And scale and increasingly, gy cost between cloud and simple outsourced computing though the latter can offer a more supported service. Cloud as an subset, and technological development from, outsourced computing

IaaS, PaaS, SaaS The three cloud service models

Infrastructure as a service IaaS is probably the simplest. You buy servers and storage, usually virtual it machines, of a certain size (cores, memory, storage etc.) Then configure them as required, including in some cases even selecting / installingthe the operating system; inothers including the operating system in the original choice.

Software as a service SaaS is probably the most familiar: computing functionality delivered over the web in the browser web site > SPA > SaaS. erdc systems, but also gmail, Hotmail, Spotify, Google Docs, Office Online, Banking apps, Survey Monkey, Zooniverse, Mendeley, Mozy The source may or may not be cloud related.

Platform as a service PaaS is probably the most relevant to trialsunits. A machine is bought with a specified platform already installed and configured e.g. the virtual machine is already set up as a web server, or a database server, or an exchange server, or a web portal etc., etc.

Storage as a service is also very familiar. For consumers OneDrive, Google Drive, icloud, Dropbox, Box, GitHub. More free storage than mostusers need Elements of IaaS and SaaS here there is often not a clear distinction bewtween these terms Also business oriented storage services OneDrive for Business, Dropboxfor business etc., usually with greater security claimed Major storage suppliers include the major Cloud PaaS suppliers, or CSPs

An aggressive price war going on between the major players Storage prices shown below but computing platforms show a similar pattern

In fact the range of services available from the two main players is now In fact the range of services available from the two main players is now very extensive

Looking at AWS S3 file storage (200 GB at approx. 3.50 / month)

A similar range available from Microsoft s s Azure service

AWS and Amazon are the big (very big!) public cloud service providers open to all as long as you pay the money Butthere there are other deployment models e.g. e Eucalyptus asa a private cloud solution, https://www.eucalyptus.com/eucalyptus cloud/iaas Public Community Private

The Hybrid cloud Security advantages of splitting computing capacity

The Hybrid cloud seen as a huge growth area Not a cloud tacked on to a traditional computing facility but cloud computing in both places

Summary Cloud computing is an extension of the more general idea of outsourcing computing capability Its key characteristics are rapid scalability and capture / release of resources, coupled with metered billing ( computing asa a utility ) ). There is a rapidly growing range of services available, often categorised asiaasor PaaS, aswell assimplesimple storage. Computing clouds can be hosted at private or enterprise level, and at community level, as well as within public commercial clouds. Or hybrid clouds can be set up combining aspects of each. It is an increasingly cheap, and powerful, way of providing gy p p y p g computing resources, and therefore tempting. But the very ease of setting up computing facilities brings with it its own problems
