VMware Point of Care Solutions for Clinicians and Caregivers

Who is VMware? VMware, the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, transforms healthcare IT with trusted solutions that improve the cost, quality and delivery of patient care. What does VMware do? Mobile clinical workspaces are the future of patient care. Like you, they must be always on whether you re in the operating room, your office, a remote clinic or a lab. You shouldn t have to think about technology. It should just work whenever, wherever the point of care takes place. With VMware Point of Care solutions, you get non-stop, mobile access to clinical applications and information. As a result: Regional, community, university, government and rural hospitals, clinics and labs around the world rely on VMware Point of Care solutions.

How do you benefit? Easily access EMRs from your PC, tablet or mobile device Improve your workflows and avoid frustrating delays with fast logins Maintain work-life balance with medical imaging on mobile devices, your ipad or your home PC Leave security and compliance to IT VMware solutions provide you with highly available, mobile access to critical patient-care applications, information and images. In the process of getting ready to move into the new hospital, we realized that we were going to have to have some significantly sophisticated information technology to support the best quality patient care. Point of Care alerts that prompt us about what we ought to be doing for that patient are going to drive up quality, drive up safety, and it should drive down costs. 1 Dr. Brad Clegg, DO, Metro Health Family Practice Physician 1

Easily access EMRs from your PC, tablet or mobile device View and update patient charts, prescribe medicines, view images and collaborate with colleagues from any terminal in the hospital, a PC in your office, a tablet in your living room, even a smartphone on the go. The VMware Point of Care solution at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital... There are many times when we need records for a patient that we are trying to treat, and we need them immediately old x-rays, EKGs, lab studies. When we can obtain an actual study, record or report, it enhances care and makes us far more able to make an immediate, timely decision. It is also a tremendous cost savings because I don t have to repeat a study. It allows us to practice more efficiently, and to provide care in a more timely and cost-effective fashion. 2 Dr. Kenneth Keller, Director, Occupational Health and former emergency care physician, McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital 2

VMware in action at Beaufort Memorial Hospital One of the first clinical applications Beaufort Memorial virtualized about a year and a half ago was MEDITECH to support physician and clinician mobility. When the IT team saw approximately 26 applications were individually being logged into, it deployed VMware View virtual desktops and single sign-on. VMware is a very elegant solution with a zero client. After we rolled this out, one of our physicians said to me: Finally, you re doing something for me, instead of to me, which is a huge compliment. 3 Ed Ricks, CIO, Beaufort Memorial Hospital With virtual desktop infrastructure, such as VMware View, you never have to worry about losing a laptop or device because all of your patient-care data is stored in a datacenter, not on the device. Using virtual desktop infrastructure from VMware, we are delivering Epic and other critical applications to more than 10,000 devices clinical desktops and thin clients, including Apple ipads. When we first rolled it out in one of our clinical facilities, nobody noticed. VMware is easy for our clinicians to use and it doesn t impact the performance of the applications they use everyday. 4 William Hudson, Director of IT, Kettering Health Network, which supports approximately 300 physician practices, 1,600 physicians and more than 12,000 named users 3

Improve your workflows and avoid frustrating delays with fast logins Move more easily throughout your work day with a clinical desktop that follows you from patient to patient, floor to floor, clinic to hospital and beyond. Tap your badge or use your fingerprint to gain secure, fast, convenient and reliable access to information where and when you request it. Automatically log off when you walk away from a workstation with VMware and single sign-on techology from leading providers such as Imprivata, then easily re-authenticate when you return. This can reduce cross-charting activities, data entry errors, and risks associated with exposing unattended records. Using Teradici PCoIP devices for our VMware View deployment has been extremely effective. All of our PCoIP zero clients are managed through the Teradici Management Console appliance. From the management console, we can push out configuration changes, update firmware, check device logs and perform other administrative tasks The addition of Imprivata OneSign gives our clinicians no click access to roaming desktops with just the tap of a badge from any PCoIP device. This has a tremendously positive effect on their workflow, removing the need to wait for applications as they move from location to location, allowing more time for patient care. 5 Robby Richard, Network Engineer, Opelousas General Health System 4

With the constant changes in healthcare, time is of the utmost importance. With the hard work of our IT department, OGHS has become a pioneer electronically with the addition of McKesson and Imprivata OneSign We piloted the system with the medical staff and saw immediate results. Accessing patient records just takes the tap of a badge, we no longer have to memorize or enter multiple passwords. The distraction and time taken to get to the information we needed has been removed, allowing us to be much more efficient with our time and with our patients. 6 Rhonda Gerace Bergeron, FNP-BC, Medical Home Director, Opelousas General Health System Single sign-on enables you to quickly access patient-care data throughout the day on different computers without having to remember multiple passwords. Access cloud applications anywhere, on any device Use a single login to access your critical Web-based and virtualized patient-care applications from an easy-to-use workspace with VMware Horizon Application Manager. There is no need to remember multiple passwords. IT centrally manages this service for you, so you don t have to worry about compliance. Nothing is stored on your device so there is no need to be concerned about a data breach if your device is lost or stolen. Plus with VMware Horizon Mobile, you can soon have your personal information and your patient information on one mobile device securely separate. 5

Maintain work-life balance with medical imaging on mobile devices, your ipad or your home PC See what s going on, before you see patients. Safely access images from your onsite Radiology Information System (RIS) or Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) on your computer, laptop, tablet or mobile device. Interact with images through a familiar point-and-click interface that is simple to navigate. Make decisions faster. Develop treatment plans more efficiently. And do it all from the comfort of your own home or office. It s an easy way to improve referring physician productivity and patient satisfaction while lowering healthcare IT costs. When we first introduced this to one of our skeptical doctors an orthopedic surgeon we said let s get you hooked up home. Traditionally, when patients come in on the weekends, he has to come into the hospital to look at their x-rays and make a decision about whether he has to cast that patient right then or if he can wait and see the patient in his office on Monday. The first weekend that he got it, he said, Where has this been? He looked at three patients x-rays from home and only had to come in to see one of them in person that weekend. 7 Dr. Brad Clegg, DO, Metro Health Family Practice Physician 6

Access medical images in the cloud VMware solutions underpin a new approach to delivering cloud-based collaborative patient care from new cloud clinical imaging providers such as Peake Healthcare Innovations, a joint venture of Harris Corporation and Johns Hopkins Medicine. Peake is working with VMware and Intel Corporation to provide a secure cloud platform for the management and delivery of enterprise medical imaging to any healthcare facility by enabling physicians and other healthcare personnel to quickly and securely access medical images from a variety of end-user devices. 7

Get started today What data is critical for you to serve patients? What applications do you use that directly affect patient care and care continuity, or help you to maintain safety and compliance?
