EndNote online Exercises Log into EndNote online at: http://www.myendnoteweb.com Select Keep me signed in You can create an account from this page. However, registering via Web of Science (WoS) gives you more file storage space and bibliographic output styles. For instructions on how to register via WoS see: http://www.docs.is.ed.ac.uk/docs/libraries/pdf/guideendnotewebregistering.pdf [If you have signed up for a personal account with Web of Science, that username/password is also the one for EndNote online. You can log into EndNote online from within Web of Science.] Manually Adding References to EndNote online Go to the Collect tab and choose New Reference from the menu. Enter the details of the journal article: Frey, B.S. & Stutzer, A. (2002) What can economists learn from happiness research? Journal of Economic Literature, 40(2), 402-435. Open a field s entry for addition or editing, by clicking in an empty box or the information that s there already. Note: i) Important for Cite While you Write, is to choose the correct Reference Type. ii) Enter author details as instructed in the guidance. One author per line. Save the reference and go to All My References to see it there. Editing EndNote online References Open the reference to add more information by selecting/clicking on the title. If necessary, click on Show Empty Fields (look to the top right of to the record to see this). Tip: The information in the records is searchable. Add words and phrases you associate with a reference to the Research Notes field. 1

Exporting records from Web of Science (WoS) into EndNote online Go to Web of Science from the top menu and do a search. Tip: in WoS, make use of truncation, ie pharma*kinetic* phrase markers, eg persistent organic pollutant* refining by document type, eg REVIEW sorting by Times Cited, etc. Select some results and click on Save to EndNote online. Choose how much of the Web of Science record you want to send to EndNote online and then Send. Go to EndNote online and open one of the imported records to see what it looks like. Edit as necessary. Tip: Look for the Attachments: section in the opened record and the Files field. Use this to store a file associated with the EndNote online reference, eg the full-text pdf of an article you have downloaded for your own personal use. Use the findit@edinburgh in an EndNote record to find out if you can read a journal article online. Using EndNote online to search the Library Catalogue From the Collect tab, choose Online Search. Select U Edinburgh from the drop down list. Then Connect. U Edinburgh not there? Use the Select Favorites link to highlight U Edinburgh from the alphabetical list on the left. Click Copy to Favorites to have it appear in the box on the right and also in the drop down list. Do a search and select some results. Tip: you are searching the library catalogue, so think about book titles for this search. Choose [Unfiled] from the Add to group drop down menu. Note: [Unfiled] are those records not added to any group. 2

Editing online book records from the Library Catalogue Open the EndNote record of an online book and edit the URL field to delete the phrase at the very end Click here for full text which is the link text not part of the URL but is imported with the rest. Now click on Go to URL button at the top of the full, open record or as below in a list. If you ve done the edit above, you will be taken into the book. You may be prompted to enter your EASE username and password. Note: findit@edinburgh will take you to online journals and online articles when we have a subscription. It does not work for online books. Grouping your EndNote online References Go to All my References (under My References tab) and select some references. Choose New group from the Add to group drop down menu and give the group a name when prompted. Open groups from the left panel menu. Use Quick Search to find a reference. Select the reference(s) and choose the group to add it to from the Add to group drop down menu Note: Quick List is a collection of references which you can keep together in a current EndNote online session. They will not be collected together when you log in another time. 3

Sharing EndNote online Group References Go to Organize tab and choose Manage My Groups. Check the box in the Share column against one of your groups (the people icon appears). Select the Manage Sharing button and then Start Sharing this group. Enter email addresses as prompted and the level of sharing, Read only or Read & Write. Go to Organize tab and Others Groups to see references colleagues have chosen to share with you. Automatically Format References and Reference Lists in Word Open Word 2013 [or Start>All Programs>Microsoft Office>Word 2010 with EndNote CWYW] Type and then go to Find Citations and search for one of the references you have in EndNote online. Tip: If the EndNote tab is labelled EndNoteX7 go there and > Preferences > Application tab > Select EndNote Web and choose OK. Enter your EndNote online username and password if prompted. Choose a reference and then Insert. The citation appears in the text and reference list starts below any text. Drop down the Style: menu to choose a different format for your referencing (eg APA, Harvard, ACS). Note: For your own computer you need to download the Cite While you Write (CWYW) plug-in from Options tab>download Installers or Format tab>cite While You Write. Install the plug-in. Edit your text and choose Update Citations and Bibliography, to have the reference list (at the bottom of your document) match. 4

Creating a Formatted Bibliography from EndNote online From Format tab, choose Bibliography. Choose the group of references you want as a bibliography from References: drop down menu. Choose the citation style from Bibliographic style: drop down menu. Note: Bibliographic style: options include BibTeX Export for those who want to use EndNote to organise references but use LaTeX for writing up. Tip: For your work, use whatever citation style the School (or a publisher) tells you to use but in cases where no direction is given, Harvard is a standard style in scientific writing. Choose RTF (rich text file) from the File format: menu. Choose Preview & Print to copy and paste into Word. Importing References into EndNote online (including back up files, see below) Go to Collect tab and Import References. Browse for the saved file [Downloads folder for Reaxys and SciFinder unless you chose elsewhere]. From Import Option: select EndNote Import for back up files but see Note:. Note: To import saved records from some databases etc, the Import Option should be a specific named option, eg ProQuest or psycinfo (OVID SP). Tip: If your Import Option choice is not obvious, try the RefMan (RIS) or EndNote Import as generic choices. Use RefMan (RIS) to import Reaxys and SciFinder records. Use To: to put the imported references into a group. Tip: Remember to choose [unfiled] if you don t want to assign your references to a group. 5

FYIs: Creating a Back Up file of EndNote online References In Format tab choose Export References. Select the group of references you want to back up from References: drop down menu. From Export style: drop down menu choose EndNote Export, then Save. Choose to Open the file and save it to where you want. Sync-ing with EndNoteX7 to get more attached file storage space To open EndNoteX7 (the desktop version of EndNote) in the open access computer labs, go to: Start>All Programs>EndNote>EndNote Program Start a new library if necessary. Go to Tools and choose Sync and enter email and password, when prompted, for EndNote online access. If first time sync-ing, enter details requested on the form. When the form is completed, choose Sync button [if choosing to backup, choose where to save the backup library]. References from EndNote online will appear in EndNote desktop and vice versa - look in EndNote online. Use the blue and white sync button to sync references again. Use Edit>Preferences>Sync if you want the synchronising to happen automatically. Note: By sync-ing, you increase the storage capacity of your EndNote online account for file attachments from 2GB to 5GB. In EndNote online, go to Organize tab>manage Attachments to see how much space you are using and how much is available.
