A.ROZUMIENIE TEKSTU PISANEGO : Przeczytaj uważnie tekst a następnie odpowiedz na pytania SATURDAY Henna: A young man is all ready for his wedding when a storm sweeps him away to sea and he wakes up in the care of a young girl. He finds that he has no memory of his past life. He falls in love with the girl but a storm on their night brings back his memories and he realizes that he must go back home. The film is put together with considerable charm. Auntie Mame : A straight comedy version of the musical but without its vitality. Rosalind Russell recreates her stage role as the ultra-confident, eccentric aunt who adopts a young orphan. Prizzi s Honour : A comedy based on Richard Condon s novel, with Jack Nicholson as a murderer up to his neck in danger and romance when he meets the mysterious Katheleen Turner. The stars are on great form, with Nicholson at his best and Turner all ice-cold beauty and intelligence. The very complex tale includes an excessively jealous exgirlfriend. This was a big hit and it s a treat but be warned: it s a movie with as many enemies as admirers. SUNDAY Lonely Hearts: Affectionate, odd and funny tale about a 50-year-old man who starts finding out about women after his overprotective mother dies. He decides to splash out on an introduction through a lonely hearts club and meets the delightful but painfully shy Patricia. However, things don t go as smoothly as he had hoped. Hero at Large : Out-of- work actor Steve Nichols earns rent money by making public appearances as cartoon character Captain Avenger. On the way home from an appearance (and still in costume) he finds himself foiling a robbery and becoming a hero for real, making everyone think there really is a Captain Avenger. Future leading man Kevin Bacon has a small role. MONDAY Fallen Angel: Dana Andrews drifts into a small Californian town with only a dollar to his name. Instantly he falls for waitress Linda Darnell, but she s only interested in men with money. So he decides that the best way to get some is to marry rich, shy, Alice Faye and then divorce her. But he becomes the prime suspect for murder. A stylish movie with a good plot. Desiree :Director Henry Koster was more at home with comedy and musicals and it shows in his handling of this historical drama. He s not helped by a rather dull script, which tells of the relationship between an Emperor and the daughter of a silk merchant. Fact is liberally mixed with fiction and it affords Marlon Brando, who adopts an uncomfortable tone of voice, few chances to do much other than to wear a succession of uniforms. I Know Where I m Going: A romantic drama with some originality, as you might expect from the film- making team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Their script abounds in wit, charm and wonderful characters. Most of these are female, including Wendy Hiller as the heroine who thinks she knows where she s going when she heads up to Scotland to marry a millionaire. Nicely shot on location in the Scottish islands. TUESDAY Cross Creek :The story of real-life writer Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, who in 1926 left her husband and home in the big city to start a new life in the Florida backwoods, soaking up the atmosphere in the hope of writing a great American novel. Mary Steenburgen s performance as the sensitive writer is terrific but the film is stronger on characters and atmosphere than pace. Bluffing It : Dennis Weaver is the tough-talking factory foreman who manages to hide his inability to read or write until circumstances force him to face up the problem. Weaver is OK but it fails to stir the emotions. Bad Day at Black Rock: The express train doesn t usually stop at the desert town of Black Rock, so when stranger Spencer Tracy steps off it, the moody locals know something is up. The material is good and very original and the 2

situations positively crackle with suspense, keeping you on the edge of your seat. There are convincing performances from some of Hollywood s best actors, headed by Tracy as the war veteran who won t give up until he finds out just what guilty secret they ve all got to hide. WEDNESDAY Special Delivery :An action caper that skillfully steers its way between thriller, romance and black comedy. A breathless opening, when four ex-soldiers rob a bank posing as toy salesmen, gives way to some nice jokes, building to a suspenseful climax that will have you anxious to find out how things turn out. Malcolm :A pleasantly eccentric comedy about a childlike amateur inventor who takes to bank robbing after losing his job as a mechanic. He meets an ex-criminal who helps him to put his various funny inventions to good criminal use. Good visual jokes but it would have been funnier with a better script. THURSDAY Sink or Swim : Handsome Jean-Paul Belmondo plays a fun-loving Frenchman who is all set to marry a mega- rich woman in America s Deep South when a jealous rival reveals a naughty secret from his past. FRIDAY Educating Rita :Julie Walters is a hairdresser who longs for a university education and Michael Caine is the tutor who quickly becomes attracted by her loud-mouthed eagerness to learn. Willy Russell s bittersweet comedy proved even more popular on film than on stage and it was the film that established Walters as a major film star. Nobody Runs Forever: Detective Rod Taylor investigates the suspicious death of the first wife of a diplomat in this ridiculous, complicated adventure. The script is completely lacking in originality and although the actors try hard, the story offers them little help. B. Uzupełnij każdą lukę w poniższym tekście JEDNYM wyrazem. Many years ago when the summers seemed longer and life was (20) complicated, we had rented a cottage by a river in the heart of the country where we were going to (21) three weeks holiday. There were four of us: me (age 9), Mum and Dad and Mum s (22), Auntie June. Oh, and I mustn t forget to (23) Spot, our little dog. I was allowed to go off by (24) all day, (25) that I promised to be careful and took Spot with me for (26). One day I was out fishing with Spot when we heard a lot of shouting in the (27) followed by a scream and a splash. I was a bit (28) so I called Spot and we both hid (29) a bush where we could see but not be (30). After a few moments a straw hat came floating down the river, followed by an oar, a picnic basket and (31) oar. Then came the rowing boat itself, but it was floating (32) down! A few seconds later my Dad and Auntie June came running (33) the river bank, both wet (34). Spot started (35) so I came out of hiding and said hello. My Dad got really angry with me for not (36) to catch the boat as it went past. Luckily, however, the boat and both the oars had been caught by an overhanging tree a little further downstream, but not the hat or the picnic basket. So I had to let them (37) my sandwiches. Dad and Auntie June both made me (38) not to tell Mum what had happened in (39) she was worried. Adapted from : Leo Jones,Progress to FC. Cambridge UP C.
