Editorial 45 years of continuity and innovation When Winfried Rauch and Josef Schilling founded MAHA Maschinenbau Haldenwang GmbH & Co. KG in 1969, they could not imagine that they were laying the foundation for one of today s globally leading workshop fitters. This success is not just a matter of chance. The company founders knew what automotive workshops require for the testing of motor vehicles. Their brake testers were built by mechanics for mechanics. With ground-breaking ideas they perfected their products and consistently developed them further. This is what makes MAHA so special to this day. For 45 years, we stand for continuity and innovations for everything related to service, development and testing of motor vehicles. We are pioneers in brake and performance testing of four wheel drive vehicles and innovators in the adaptation of new technologies. This is demonstrated with our electronic measurement system, radio pressure transducers, contact-free tread depth gauge, wheel alignment, emissions measurement technology, the digital headlight tester and much more. In addition, MAHA stands for customer and case-oriented lifting technology. Our lifts range from lifts for small workshops to special solutions for the automotive industry. Last but not least, we ensure uninterrupted operation of our products across the entire life cycle, with our high service level and availability of spare parts. The ingenuity of the company founders has remained with MAHA for 45 years. Even today, we are in tune with the market and offer our customers solutions for efficient service and test procedures. Our innovative software products and acceptance concepts demonstrate that we think beyond mechanical engineering and have long completed the digital change. We are committed to continuing this path in the future. We will present our latest innovations to you in autumn at the Automechanika trade show in Frankfurt. Look forward to exciting things to come! The ingenuity of the company founders has remained with MAHA for 45 years. Even today, we are in tune with the market and offer our customers solutions for efficient service and test procedures. MAHA Technologies Photos: Linzing The MET 6.3 combination tester is one of the most compact and powerful devices of its kind. All components are integrated in the housing. Accurate combination tester MAHA launches the new MET 6.3 combination emissions tester. With its innovative technology the device can measure the turbidity value of diesel emissions at a resolution of 0.01 m -1. Karl-Heinz Steiger, Product Manager for Emissions Testing Technology The combination tester MET 6.3 can reliably determine the partially very low emissions test sticker values during emissions testing. 4 The new combination tester MET 6.3 from MAHA is proof that there is still lots of potential for even turbidity measurement methods for diesel emissions. Based on these findings and experiences with the scattered light measurement technique (see box on right), the developers at MAHA were able to develop classic opacimeters in such a way that they are now able to accurately determine the low k-values of modern diesel. Small but sturdy The heart piece of the MET 6.3 is the new opacimeter measuring cell. It is significantly smaller than previous device generations. In addition, it is very sturdy and designed to resist contamination. Thanks to the miniaturization, the heating-up time is only one minute and the device is significantly more dynamic during measurement of the k-values. And this at a bandwidth of 0 to 9.99 m -1 and a resolution of 0.01 m -1. This means the MET 6.3 is also able to accurately measure the partially very low emissions test sticker values of modern diesel vehicles during emissions testing with emissions after-treatment systems, says Karl-Heinz Steiger, Product Manager for Emissions Testing Technology at MAHA. In addition, thanks to the high measurement value resolution and a conversion procedure, the MET 6.3 can also display the particle mass concentration. New measuring bench In addition to the innovative opacimeter measuring chamber, the MET 6.3 is also equipped with a newly developed measuring bench for the exhaust gas components CO2 and HC as well as an electrochemically operating oxygen sensor. Optionally, the combination tester can also be equipped with an NOx sensor. The new measuring bench works more accurately than the current standard OIML 0 The light source of the opacimeter-measuring chamber is very easy to remove for maintenance.

stipulates. Also, the heating-up time is only 40 seconds and uses far less electricity than the previous generation. Ideal for mobile use The MET 6.3 combination tester is one of the most compact and powerful devices of its kind. Therefore, it is perfectly suitable for mobile use. It only needs one probe, irrespective if a petrol or diesel vehicle is being measured. The emissions sample is suctioned with a pump into the device via a 2.5 m long measuring hose. This results in a quick and even filling of the measuring chamber. In the device, the emissions sample first flows through the measuring chamber of the opacimeter and the turbidity value is determined. Thereafter, the emission sample passes through a filter and flows to the measuring bench. This way, all exhaust gas components are always measured in both petrol and diesel engines. This is particularly helpful for diagnostic tasks. Another special feature of the MET 6.3 is the active water separator which works with a so-called peltier element. Thanks to a sophisticated technology it extracts the water from the gas sample without affecting the particle composition. The separated water flows into a condensate collecting tank. Equipment for practical use The MET 6.3 is equipped with several interfaces. It can be linked per LAN or WiFi to a PC and via Bluetooth to an OBD module. The antennas for the wireless communication are integrated in the device housing. Maintenance of the device is extremely easy. All filters and the optical sensor of the measuring chamber can be accessed via the maintenance flaps positioned on the side. The filters are dimensioned in such a way that maintenance work is very rarely necessary. Following PTB approval, the new combination tester from MAHA is expected to be available at a competitive price from the second quarter of 2014. Customers who participated in the special promotion for the market launch of the MET series, can now swap the MET 6.1 and the MDO 2 LON for the new MET 6.3, free of charge. The maintenance flaps allow for easy access to the filters and the measuring cell lenses. The MET 6.3 filters have been dimensioned very large, so that they do not have to be replaced very often. During operation the optical sensor is protected from contamination by a clean-air curtain. However, should cleaning become necessary, this can be easily done with a lint-free cloth. Development of the scattered light method The strict emissions limits have resulted in modern diesel vehicles only emitting very low levels of pollutants. In order to test emissions after-treatment systems for efficiency, measuring technology needs to be very sensitive. MAHA was the first company in the workshop fitting industry to recognise this necessity and to develop a new measuring method for particle concentration in diesel emissions with the scattered laser light method. In order to use this new measuring technology for emissions testing, MAHA participated, under the umbrella of the ASA Association (German Automobile Service Equipment Association), together with other companies and the Physical Technical Federal Institution (PTB) in a research project. This project has now been completed and it showed that scattered light measuring devices are able to determine the turbidity coefficient k of diesel emissions with up to 100 times more accuracy than previous opacimeters. In a further project, MAHA, together with other measurement cell manufacturers, is now working on finding solutions for some remaining open points, for example the calibration of the devices, the contamination control and the impact of condensation. This project is scheduled for completion at the end of the first quarter in 2015. A type approval for the scattered light measuring devices can then be applied for. Four studies have already proven their suitability for everyday use. The complex measuring method of the PTB in Braunschweig verified an excellent correlation of the scattered light measuring method with the turbidity coefficient k. Photo: ASA Association 5

In addition, they are torsion-proof, low in maintenance, durable and resilient to external influences. 8

MAHA worldwide Colonel Khalifa Al-Zidi of the Royal Oman Police (left) and Klaus Burger, Managing Director of MAHA, shake hands on the cooperation deal. Photos: MAHA State-of-the-art test lanes for Oman The latest technology from MAHA for the expansion of the test stations network in Oman. A new test station is being built in Jaalan Bani Bu Ali. The safety of motor vehicles will be tested here with powerful MAHA test lanes. The Sultanate of Oman wants to drastically reduce the number of people injured and killed in road traffic. In order to achieve this goal, the government decided to shorten the term of periodic technical vehicle testing from eight to three years. As a result the test volume has increased significantly and the expansion of the test stations network as well as the modernisation thereof has become necessary. The project was put up for tender globally. Thanks to good contacts and good references from similar projects in the Near East and Middle East, MAHA was awarded the tender. The state police bureau of the Royal Oman Police (ROP) and the MAHA partner Khimji Ramdas (KR) are the partners in this project. Networked test technology Within the framework of this project, MAHA will supply 60 test lanes and two test containers for equipping 17 test stations at different locations. In addition, for the first time, MAHA will implement a nationwide linking of the test stations to the government data base. For this, the online-based data management system VIMAS will be used. This software solution bundles all data collected in vehicle tests and stores them centrally on an external server. The data are promptly available to all authorised parties for various evaluations. VIMAS is modular in design and additionally provides the test engineers with current target values and vehicle information in real-time for the testing process. Extensive service The project also includes an extensive service package. MAHA will train users and administrators of VIMAS as well as the service engineers of KR on site and in Haldenwang. The latter will also be responsible for the maintenance of the test lanes. In addition, MAHA offers international support in order to keep down-times to a minimum in case of malfunctions. The test lanes will be installed during the course of this year. Oman: Figures and facts The Sultanate of Oman is located on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The area of 309,500 km 2 is home to a population of almost 3.2 million. Oman has a road network of about 32,800 km. Private motor vehicles are the main means of transport in Oman. Public transport is rare. All-terrain vehicles and Japanese car makes dominate the roads. The speed limit is 120 km/h. In 2012, 1056 people were fatally injured in around 8200 road accidents. To improve road safety, the state police authority, the Royal Oman Police, wants to better monitor the safety of vehicles on the one hand. This is where MAHA will contribute significantly in the future with state-of-the-art testing technology and the VIMAS software solution. On the other hand, latest traffic control systems will be employed nationwide. Violations of traffic regulations carry strict penalties. MAHA is equips 17 sites in Oman with test lanes and a network. 9

MAHA worldwide Test lanes from MAHA are increasingly being used in testing stations for commercial vehicles. tester and calibration device into the MAHA IW7 truck brake tester, going beyond the scope of the standard equipment. MAHA UK Ltd. leading in commercial vehicle test lanes MAHA UK is one of the leading suppliers of testing and lifting technology for authorized test sites in Great Britain. 10 Vehicle testing in Great Britain has undergone significant changes in recent years. Ever since the British government decided, in 2009, to reduce the number of its own test centres for heavy commercial vehicles and buses, and to increasingly have periodical technical vehicle inspections performed in authorised workshops (authorised testing facility ATF), many private companies have invested in modern test equipment. Currently, there are 320 testing sites in Great Britain. There will be more in 2014. An authorised testing facility must be equipped with a test lane which consists of at least one 20 ton roller-brake tester, one axle play tester, one axle lift, one headlight tester and one opacimeter. Willingness for additional investments MAHA UK is now one of the leading suppliers of test equipment for testing sites in Great Britain. More than 40 companies have decided to integrate the TCS tachograph Many companies have added tachograph testers to their brake testers. Photo: MAHA Testing and lifting technology from one source A decisive factor for MAHA UK being so successful in the equipping of test sites is the fact that the company can supply testing and measuring technology as well as lifting technology entirely from one source. This is a great advantage for customers in terms of maintenance and calibration of the test equipment. In addition to high quality testing and lifting technology, MAHA UK also offers its customers extended warranties and maintenance contracts. Meanwhile, MAHA UK is not only the leading supplier for commercial test lanes. The company is also one of the most important suppliers of test equipment and testing devices for the 22,000 car workshops that perform technical vehicle inspections. Test lanes from MAHA are used widely also for the inspection of vehicles.

Successful relaunch of MAHA Polska Sp.z.o.o. A year has passed since the replacement of the executive management of MAHA Polska. Here is an interim report on the success story. A lot has happened at MAHA Polska in the last year. The replacement of the executive management and the restructuring measures by Peter Surray are now showing first results. For example, the cooperation with car manufacturers, universities and test stations for vehicle monitoring was successfully expanded. The increased turnover and number of employees must also be considered a success. In addition, the strategical staff development made good progress. The sales and service staff of MAHA Polska took part in numerous user and technician training courses at the MAHA First MAHA test lane goes into operation in Canada The test lane from MAHA helps Canadian workshop to recognise repair potential when accepting orders. In autumn of last year the first MAHA test lane in Canada was installed and put into operation in Toronto. Canadian Tire is the first workshop in Canada to offer customers a professional vehicle inspection with innovative technology from MAHA. The test lane consists of a side-slip tester, a suspension and roller brake tester as well as an automatic tread depth gauge. Recognising repair potential Maintenance and repair work is in decline around the world. This is why it is so important for car workshops to recognise potential for training department. Also, the new management consistently initiated the implementation of the CI specifications of the MAHA Group. Adapted service structures Furthermore, the service structures were adapted to the market requirements with decentralized service points. Thanks to this measure, customers can now be served even more flexibly and quicker. As a result of these clear structures in the service team, the service processes are now more efficient. Last but not least, the administration and repairs at taxi check-ins. A test lane is crucial for this. Testing creates confidence The test lanes from MAHA are the ideal aid for objectively assessing the safety and wear condition of vehicles. Customers can already be informed about necessary repairs when checking in. In addition, the order scope can be established together with the customer already at check-in. The advantage of this is that the checkin condition of the vehicle and the repair success are documented, which creates transparency and trust. The periodical technical finance departments were adapted to these new structures. Ambitious goals Despite all of these successes, MAHA Polska continues to pursue ambitious goals. For example, the new company building is already being planned. Furthermore, it is intended to build and expand the expertise in performance testing technology. vehicle inspection (PTI) is another field of application for test lanes. In this context, the test systems from MAHA allow for a high vehicle throughput and efficient test procedures. Since the beginning of 2013, MAHA is represented in Canada with an office in Ottawa. A dealer and service network has already been established. At the beginning of 2014, the second MAHA test lane was installed at the Canadian Automobile Association CCA in Québec. MAHA Polska is on the road to success. Peter Surray and his team accomplished a lot last year. Trade shows & events At the LTU 2014, MAHA had the opportunity to present innovative solutions for testing and lifting of agricultural machines to visitors from the trade. Photo: Linzing MAHA at the LTU The Landtechnische Unternehmer Tage (LTU) is one of the most important industry meetings of agricultural technology. MAHA had the opportunity to present pioneering test and lifting technology to the specialists. Agricultural technology is a growing segment with great potential for MAHA. The technology of agricultural machines is becoming more and more complex. In addition, the safety requirements for tractors and trailers are becoming stricter. MAHA has established a good reputation for itself in the industry with specific solutions for agricultural machines in recent years. The invitation to participate in the LTU 2014 in Würzburg confirms this. Innovative solutions Photos: MAHA As the only workshop fitter present, MAHA had the opportunity to present its own innovative solutions to over 700 participants at the LTU and to maintain contacts and the company s image. In the lobby and the outside area of the Würzburg Congress Centre, specialists could obtain information about the RGA TS mobile lifting system with wheel engaging columns for tractors, the MBT 6000 brake tester, which was specially designed for tractors, the ZW 500 power take-off dynamometer and the MET 6.3 emissions tester from MAHA. Although there is no statutory basis for the brake and emissions testing for agricultural machines, the response to the exhibition of testing technology from MAHA was very positive says Robert Ohneberg, Key-Account Agricultural Technology at MAHA. According to Mr Ohneberg, experts are increasingly recognising the importance of functioning brake systems and correct tractor unit/trailer balance, also for agricultural machines. Without appropriate brake testers this can hardly be determined. Expertise for the industry The LTU 2014 was held under the auspices of the trade journal Argartechnik. The top-class presentations and workshops stood under the motto: Small and medium dealers also have a future. Ohneberg: We would gladly give specialist presentations at the LTU in the future and pass on our expertise to the industry. Safety for agricultural machines 12 More power, more speed. This is the trend in agricultural machinery. To ensure that safety does not fall behind, functioning brakes are absolutely crucial. MAHA offers a specially designed brake tester for agricultural machines with the MBT 6000. The tractor unit and trailer can be ideally coordinated with the device. The result is more safety for all road users. The tractor units can be lifted at the front and back with modified wheel engaging columns. Power take-off dynamometers from MAHA offer many diagnostic and testing possibilities.

Automechanika in Shanghai MAHA China presents premium workshop equipment to an international audience. At the beginning of December last year, the Automechanika Shanghai was held in China. MAHA China was one of the 4,400 exhibitors. The Chinese representation of the Allgäu workshop fitters presented a selection of the current test and lifting technology range to experts from the trade. Additionally, contacts were maintained and new contacts formed. Great interest in MAHA products At the MAHA stand, visitors from the trade had the opportunity to receive information about in-ground lifting devices, axle play testers, brake testers, suspension testers and headlight testers. During the four days of the trade show, around 1,000 experts from the trade visited the MAHA stand in Hall W3 of the Shanghai New International Expo Center. Focus on the MLT 3000 The visitors from the trade included customers, dealers, journalists and other trade show visitors. All showed great interest in the company and in MAHA products. MAHA News 14 Even hybrid and electric vehicles can easily be tested with the MSR 500/2 single roller dynamometer. Win a performance dynamometer The dynamometer celebrates its 35th anniversary at MAHA. For this occasion, the Allgäu workshop fitter is seeking the oldest still working dynamometer. The winner will receive a brand new anniversary dynamometer, the MSR 500/2 4 wheel drive including foundation work, delivery and installation as well as user training. Automobile workshops who operate an old performance dynamometer can enter the competition until 31.08.2014. And it s very simple: Enter your contact details and the complete dynamometer information at www.maha.de/msr500-gewinnspiel. The winner will be announced at the Automechanika in Frankfurt. This is also where he will receive the MSR 500/2. Test drive in the workshop Entering the competition is worth it. Because the MSR 500/2 single roller dynamometer offers extensive measuring and testing options. It even allows for measurements of vehicles with high engine power or tests with a long test duration. The use of electric machines for the drive of the rollers in combination with the powerful eddy-current brakes furthermore allows for a perfect synchronous running of the front and back axle. This way, vehicles with widely different four-wheel drive systems can be tested without any problems. For vehicles driven by a single axle the non-driven axle of the electric motor can be run at the same speed as the drive axle. Furthermore, the dynamometer is also suited for testing of hybrid and electric vehicles. Photo: Linzing Workshop operators who purchase a new MAHA brake tester of the MBT series 4000/7000 now, receive EUR 3,000 for their old testing device. Secure EUR 3,000 for your old truck brake tester now The brake tester is part of the standard equipment of an automobile workshop. At the same time it is a long-term asset which performs well and reliably for decades. Are you ready for the HU Brake Regulation? However, at some point a new investment has to be made. Especially considering that the current HU Brake Regulation will come into full force from 01.07.2015. Brake testers will then be required to make the determined brake force values available for further evaluation via the standard asa live stream interface. For many older brake testers, retrofitting will no longer be possible technically or for economic reasons. Therefore workshops should already start considering new purchases. End of the promotion: 31.03.2014 MAHA makes the decision for a new purchase a little easier for workshop operators with brake testers older than 16 years. When purchasing a truck brake tester of the MBT series 4000/7000, MAHA will buy back your old tester for EUR 3,000, irrespective of the brand. It just has to have been installed before 1998. The promotion will run until 31 March 2014. Many older brake testers cannot be adapted viably to the new requirements of the HU Brake Regulation. A new acquisition is inevitable.
