Professional Teaching

Welcome to Tübingen The University Town of Tübingen is steeped in tradition. It is situated in Southern Germany in the heart of Baden-Württemberg, between the Black Forest and the Swabian Alps, and is not far from Stuttgart. The most noteworthy features of the town are the collegiate church, the castle and most importantly the University Hospitals. The University of Tübingen was founded in 1477 by Count Eberhard, the first Duke of Württemberg. In the course of time separate disciplines developed from the Faculty of Medicine which was one of the University s founding Faculties. For example, in 1806 the disciplines Surgery and Obstetrics became separate from Internal Medicine. One year earlier, in 1805, the first Hospital with a total of 15 beds was opened in the Alte Burse. In this Hospital medical students were taught directly at the patients bedside. On the 13 th of May 2005 the University Hospital celebrated its 200th anniversary and a Gingko tree was planted in Tübingen s old botanical garden to commemorate the occasion. Today the University Hospital is a modern centre providing first-class medical care for its patients. It is a Hospital which offers the very best in health-care, and also serves as a District Hospital for the Administrative District of Tübingen. The University Hospital s catchment area extends from the mid-neckar urban area to Lake Constance. In 1998 the University Hospital Tübingen was given a new legal standing following the reforms carried out in medicine at University level in Baden-Württemberg. As an independent public-law Institution, the University Hospital can now react quickly to economic changes and changes in health policy. 1

Convalescence... Over 65.000 patients are admitted annually to the University Hospital Tübingen as in-patients. There are approximately 1.500 beds available in the 17 Hospitals and 7 Centres. An additional 250.000 patients are treated in the Outpatient Clinics and Specialised Surgeries. Our hospital staff endeavours to treat all patients in a competent, friendly and caring manner. To respect and to care for our patients needs is of paramount importance to all our doctors, nurses and hospital staff. According to an opinion poll carried out at regular intervals, over 93 percent of our patients are happy to recommend the University Hospital to their friends and relatives! The University Hospital Tübingen has established itself as one of the leading Centres of Medicine at University level in Germany. The treatment of oncologic patients, intensive care for premature babies, geriatric medicine, and cardiac, neuro and transplant surgery are just a few examples of the first-class medical care we provide. In our Hospitals, clinical research and medical care work hand in hand, be it in organ and stem cell transplantation, or in the highly specialised Stroke Unit, or in the development of biomaterials. The three segments of the University Hospital s logo depict the combination of medical care, research and professional teaching. This concept is of great benefit to our patients: Future-orientated technology, featured in all of our approximately forty specialist departments, is a prerequisite for a quick and reliable diagnosis. The combination of medical care and internationally renowned research ensures that our patients receive treatment to the very highest medical standard. Furthermore, our doctors and nursing teams are renowned for their dedication and solicitude in looking after the patients entrusted to their care. If you would like more information, visit us on the University Hospital Tübingen s web pages: www.medizin.uni-tuebingen.de/en/

Research... Oncology, neuroscience, immunology, cell biology, the study of infectious diseases and medical technology have already made their mark in the field of research conducted by the Faculty of Medicine. We intend to further expand these main areas of research in the future to include the fields of vascular and regenerative medicine. Plans for the requisite infrastructure have already been made. The University Hospital on the Schnarrenberg is constantly being expanded. New hospital and research buildings are being built every year. Special research Chairs, known as the Tübingen Model, facilitate the close collaboration between basic research and the Hospital: This ensures a sound basis for patient and disease-orientated research. In recent years the Faculty was able to achieve a substantial increase of third-party funds. With their attractive research projects and special promotion programmes our researchers were able to gain financial grants from sponsors such as the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) as well as a number of other grants from foundations and research promotion institutions. The University, the Max Planck Institutes, the Transfer Centres of the Steinbeis Foundation, and most importantly the University Hospitals themselves have all contributed to Tübingen becoming one of the world s leaders as a home for scientific study. This particularly applies to the fields of Life Science and Medicine. If you would like more information, visit us on the web pages of the Faculty of Medicine Tübingen: www.medizin.uni-tuebingen.de/en/research/

Professional Teaching... One of the Faculty of Medicine s major tasks is the provision of professional teaching. Nearly 3.000 students study human or oral medicine in Tübingen. The Faculty of Medicine is also responsible for the further education of the next generation of young scientists and the training of medical specialists. The basic features of Tübingen s innovative teaching methods are practical, problem-orientated and interdisciplinary instruction in small groups; practicing communicative strategies; the acquisition of ethic competences, and learning how to work in a scientific manner. Periods of practical training in resident doctors surgeries are also a part of the study of medicine. This gives prospective young doctors the opportunity to learn more about the illnesses which are most frequently treated there. Students in Tübingen are integrated into the planning and development of the training concepts for the study of human and oral medicine. The curriculum is planned in such a way that it can be completed in the mandatory 12 semesters, or 10 in the case of oral medicine. The post-graduate degree course Neuroscience and Behavioural Science has achieved international acclaim. This Graduate School, which was jointly established by the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Biology, acquired the status of an International Max Planck Research School with effect from 2001. In Tübingen even the teachers are part of the learning programme. The Competence Centre for Teaching Methods in Medicine Baden-Württemberg offers a compact specialist programme of further education to run parallel to professional duties. This programme is specifically geared to the work and needs of professional teachers in the field of medicine. The aim is to develop and improve their didactic expertise, which is increasing in importance for job applications and professional advancement. Working... We have a lot of work to do. There are approximately 8.500 full and part-time employees working in the University Hospital. But we also employ dieticians, computer specialists, ergotherapists, teachers, labourers, domestic and commercial clerks, cooks, physiotherapists, speech therapists, medical technicians, natural scientists, cleaning staff, secretaries, social education workers, technicians and administrative specialists, to name but a few. In-house training and further education for all members of our staff are very important factors at the University Hospital: We offer a variety of training courses ranging from basic computer courses for beginners to further training in the most advanced operation techniques and specialised nursing care. and Training...

Working with people, working in a team, doing a worthwhile job, an interest in modern medicine there are many different reasons for vocational training in the health sector. Approximately 600 young people receive vocational training at the University Hospital. They do an apprenticeship or visit one of the schools or colleges. ... in Tübingen From the old town centre to the castle, Tübingen s image is characterised by steep stone stairways, narrow alleyways and pointed gables. In this Swabian University Town with its 84.000 inhabitants and 22.000 students, the flair of the lovingly restored medieval town centre is combined with the colourful bustle and the joie de vivre of a young-minded and cosmopolitan University Town. Numerous street cafés, wine bars, restaurants, cosy student pubs and unusual shops positively invite you to take a casual stroll or even to linger for a while and enjoy the atmosphere. A ride in a punt on the river Neckar will give you a superb view of the picturesque buildings on the bank of the Neckar and the famous Hölderlin Tower. The University of Tübingen is one of the oldest Universities in Germany. Johannes Keppler, and the Big Three Hegel, Schelling and Hölderlin spent their student years in Tübingen, as did Gustav Schwab and Eduard Mörike. Today the University offers a comprehensive range of studies with 240 courses in approximately 80 disciplines. This spectrum ranges from the traditional disciplines offered by a classical University to the new sciences, such as Life Science.
