MEng/BEng (Honours) ELECTRONIC and ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

MEng/BEng (Honours) ELECTRONIC and ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Everywhere you look electronic & electrical engineering is there from efficient energy systems to lower carbon emissions, highspeed fibre optic broadband, digital sound and vision, and internet security, to electronic systems at home, in entertainment technology and industry. Studying the electronic and electrical engineering discipline opens many doors, and with two million new employees needed in the UK engineering sector by 2020, career opportunities are vast. The Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering offers three premium degrees designed to capitalise on such opportunities. So whatever you want to do... whether it s learning to tackle today s global energy challenges by designing renewable energy solutions, creating an advanced control mechanism to improve driver handling for a formula one vehicle, or developing embedded software systems to ensure safe, wireless communications networks... you can do it by studying our discipline. Our Department is a partner of choice for more than 60 well-known employers, and demand for our graduates is high. Over 90% gain a job within six months of their graduation. Course Options MEng/BEng (Honours) Electronic and Electrical Engineering MEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering with Business Studies MEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering with International Study Course Structure Years 1 to 3 of our core degrees follow a common curriculum, providing a fundamental technical knowledge and necessary analytical skills. Flexibility in Years 4 and 5 allow for specialisation in your chosen subject areas. Transfer from the BEng to MEng is possible after any year. The BEng Honours Year 4 delivers classes in technology application areas. An individual project provides opportunities for personal development, as well as demonstrating knowledge, understanding and learning abilities. This degree constitutes an accredited stage towards IET Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. MEng Years 4 & 5 provide an integrated education to a professional level in the relevant subject matter. An individual project in Year 4 and group project in Year 5 allow for personal and professional development. In the MEng Business Studies stream, specialist classes in business, entrepreneurship and management are taken in parallel with the technical engineering classes. These are delivered by the University s internationally renowned, Business School. In the increasingly global context of engineering practice, studying abroad is highly valued by prospective employers.

The MEng with International Study integrates a full academic session, Year 4, at a partner university overseas. Opportunities for language study are available in Years 1 to 3 in support of Year 4 and full academic credit is given for the classes studied at the overseas partner. The Department has extensive experience of overseas student exchange, with previous graduates travelling to USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. The MEng/BEng (Honours) degrees meet all the educational requirements of the IET, offering the most direct route to CEng status a must for most employers fast-tracking your way to professional recognition. Course Syllabus Year 1 Core Engineering & Science Skills Classes in mathematics, engineering science, analogue and digital circuits, software design, electronics, electrical engineering, computing and business are taken. You complete a variety of groupbased laboratory projects to gain practical training in core engineering applications and project management skills. Year 2 Core Engineering & Technology Skills The study of analogue and digital electronics continues, enhanced by an introduction to basic concepts in signal processing. Further study includes the design and analysis of electrical and microcontroller-based instrumentation systems, coupled with further classes in advanced maths; all supported by practical and teamworking activities. Year 3 Specialist Engineering Skills You develop specialist engineering skills through classes that include the following topics: Signals & Communications Principles Analogue & Digital Electronics Design Electromagnetics Embedded Systems Design Engineering Innovation and Management Power Engineering Project Management Methods Renewable Energy Principles and Technologies Years 4 & 5 Engineering for your Professional Future Here you customise your studies to focus on the many and varied topics within the discipline. Your personalised curriculum is achieved through a selection of classes combined with individual and group project work. You also have the opportunity to broaden and enhance your studies by taking classes from Science and Business departments, and/or studying abroad. Year 4 (BEng (Honours) & MEng) You undertake an individual project to enhance your technical and project management skills, and develop specialist engineering knowledge by choosing classes from the following topics: Advanced Analogue Electronics Design Communications Networks Control Principles and Techniques Digital Signal Processing Energy Supply Network Protection Information Transmission and Security Optical Communications Systems Power Electronics and Machines

Year 5 (MEng only) A major group project and selection of classes covering from the advanced topics below, are completed: Advanced Digital Signal Processing Microcontroller Systems and Design Advanced Power System Protection Digital Signal Processing Implementation Electricity Market & System Economics Electronics for Energy Control FPGA-based Embedded System Design High Voltage Technology Design & Applications Instrumentation & Condition Monitoring Mobile and Wireless Communications Multimedia Signal & Image Processing Robotics Design Wind Energy Systems Teaching and Assessment A blend of student-centric methods, including interactive lectures, small group problem-solving tutorials, practical laboratories as well as industrial visits and seminars by professional engineers are used throughout all years of study. The programmes ensure that you develop not only technical engineering and computing expertise, but also, and equally importantly, communication, project management, leadership and entrepreneurial skills. There is a wide range of assessment methods, including assignments, examinations and individual and groupbased projects. Both class delivery and assessment make use of web-based and multimedia facilities. I had an FM Bruce award in Years 1 to 3, and an IET Power Academy scholarship with National Grid for the last two years. These awards helped financially and the Academy gave me invaluable industry experience. Lectures on the structure of the sector, combined with technical knowledge gained over my five years of study prepared me well for my chosen career in the power industry. Brian Doyle, MEng Electronic & Electrical Engineering with Business Studies 2014, Distribution Graduate Engineer, SSE

The course typically consists of around 10 lectures, five tutorial/problem-solving classes and three practical classes per week. Students also undertake around 20 hours of self-study. The Department The Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering has an excellent reputation for student satisfaction and graduate employment and is considered one of the premier departments of its kind in the UK. Our teaching is underpinned by world-class industrially relevant research, and all of these degrees have full accreditation from the Institution of Engineering & Technology. This ensures that they provide an education that is appropriate for today's competitive job market and one that is recognised by employers. We have extensive industrial and academic collaborations with opportunities for work placements in the UK and overseas. You can also participate in the department community-based project in The Gambia. Overseas expeditions to support the installation of solar energy technology in local schools and clinics are undertaken each year by students and staff. Scholarships and Work Placements Our department runs one of the UK s largest industry-supported Scholarships Programme, providing annual bursaries of up to 5000, as well as help with books, software and paid summer internships with a range of well known, international organisations such as Rolls-Royce, ScottishPower and AMEC. We are the only Department in Scotland in the IET Power Academy and have been hand-picked by several leading global engineering organisations, such as BP and Siemens, to participate in their scholarship schemes. The Programme, open to all our students, includes: S6 Bursaries open to eligible S6 Scottish applicants Royal College Awards a bursary for international applicants FM Bruce Scholarships AMEC Electrical Engineering Scholarship Lloyd s Register Foundation Scholarship BP Scholarships IET Power Academy Engineering Excellence Scholarships with MacTaggart Scott, ScottishPower and Wood Group
