UNICAMP SEG STUDENT CHAPTER The UNICAMP SEG Student Chapter was established in March, 2010, and it is composed by students (undergraduate and graduate) from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), located in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil. A summary of the Chapter s activities in 2014 will be presented in this report.
2014 UNICAMP SEG Student Chapter Report 1. Regular Meetings The UNICAMP SEG Student Chapter use to organize meetings regularly. In 2014 the meetings were on: March 24th, 2014 April 1st, 2014 April 5th, 2014 May 7th, 2014 October 16th, 2014 2. Field Trips I. Metallogeny in an accreted continental margin: the case of the Northern Andes XXXII Curso Latianoamericano de Metalogenia UNESCO-SEG-SGA (May, 2014) One of our graduate student members, Verônica Godinho Trevisan, was selected to join a useful and interesting field trip as part of the XXXII Latin American UNESCO-SEG-SGA Course of Metallogeny in Quito given by professor Lluís Fontboté and geologists from mining companies. In this trip three gold deposits were visited: Loma Larga (High sulfidation epithermal Au, INV Metals) (Fig. 1), Gabi-Papa Grande (Au-Cu porphyry, Guadalupe Mining Corporation y Gaby Panama Corporation), and El Domo (Au-Zn VHMS, Salazar Resources). 3. Organization of conferences, workshops, short courses I. Lecture (April 24th, 2014) Prof. Dr. Daniel Atencio (University of São Paulo) Minerais novos do Brasil descritos no século XXI The lecture attended to 35 people, whose main objective was to show the new minerals described in Brazil in the last years (Fig. 2). Prof. Daniel Atencio is the greatest Brazilian mineralogist and shared with us a little of his knowledge and experience in mineralogy. His lecture was very fruitful for students of all graduation years, with a plenty of pictures and his new mineral discoveries. Figure. 2. Prof Dr. Daniel Atencio in his lecture at UNICAMP. II. Lecture (June 5th, 2014) Prof. Dr. Carolina Penteado Natividade Moreto (University of Campinas) Evolução metalogenética de depósitos cupríferos do Cinturão Sul do Cobre, Província Carajás Msc. Rafael Rodrigues de Assis (University of Campinas) - Província Aurífera de Alta Floresta (MT): depósitos auríferos associados a sistemas plutônicos-vulcânicos paleoproterozoicos The lectures were based in two importante mineral provinces in Brazil: Carajas Mineral Province and Alta Floresta Gold Province. Dr. Carolina Moreto and MSc. Rafael Assis have shown us some interesting points of each province, including general concepts of economic geology. About 15 people took part in the lecture. As ex-students from University of Campinas and ex-members of UNICAMP SEG Student Chapter, both lectures also encouraged the young students to follow the same steps of Dr. Carolina Moreto and MSc. Rafael Assis (Fig. 3).

UPA 2014 Opened University for other students (August 30th, 2014) The UPA event aims to give the opportunity to high school students get acquainted with all the options that the University of Campinas offers in terms of its undergraduate courses. The Geosciences Institute organizes several displays showing themes related to Geology and Geography courses. In this opportunity, the Unicamp SEG student chapter (Fig. 4) coordinated the section of rocks, minerals and ore minerals in order to show to the public what are the difference between them, how they are formed and their application in our society. IV. Short-course (October 20-21th, 2014) Prof. Dr. Jose Affonso Brod (University of Goias) Rochas alcalinas e depósitos minerais associados A two-day short-course was offered by Dr. Affonso Brod from University of Goiás for 20 participants. Among these participants there were 15 students from UNICAMP SEG Student Chapter, 4 students from other student chapter (University of São Paulo (USP), São Paulo State University (UNESP) and University of Bahia (UFBA)), and Prof. Dr. Carolina Moreto from University of Campinas (Fig. 5). Dr. Affonso Brod is a specialist of alkaline rocks and associated ore deposits. During the course he was very attentive and didactic, showing us some good examples of Nb, ETR, P and Ti ore deposits. Figure. 5. Participants and Prof Dr. Affonso Brod during the short-couse at UNICAMP. 4. Participation in conferences, workshops, short courses I. VI Brazilian Symposium on Mineral Exploration Ouro Preto, Brazil The VI Brazilian Symposium on Mineral Exploration in Ouro Preto lasted 3 days where members of mining industry and academy discussed the current themes of mining sector in Brazil. Five students of each student chapter in Brazil were invited to take part in the event. They were responsible for the disclosure of SEG booth. It was a remarkable experience once they could exchange ideas of each student chapter. During the event a meeting of the student chapters was carried out in order to make arrangements for the future (Fig. 6).

XXXII UNESCO-SGA-SEG Latin American Metallogeny Course Quito, Ecuador The PhD student Gustavo Melo and the Master student Verônica Trevisan were chosen to take part in the XXXII UNESCO-SGA-SEG Latin American Metallogeny Course at Quito (Fig. 7). The theoretical course was carried out at Universidad Central del Ecuador and present as the main theme Metalogenia en un margen continental acredcionado: el caso de los Andes Septentrionales. Amongst the main lectures were Prof. Dr. Lluís Fontbotè (University of Geneva, SEG), Prof. Dr. Massimo Chiaradia (University of Geneva, SGA), Prof. Dr. Richard Spikings (University of Geneva) and Dr. Jeffrey Hedenquist (SEG). Future Plans In 2015, we have already been chosen to host the XXXIII Latin American Metallogeny Course here at University of Campinas. Organizing committee is composed of Dr. Roberto Xavier (University of Campinas), Dr. Carolina Moreto (University of Campinas), Dr. Maria José Mesquita (University of Campinas), Dr. Lena Virginia Monteiro (University of São Paulo) and Dr. Caetano Juliani (University of São Paulo) and the UNICAMP SEG Student Chapter. It will be a great opportunity with an international event in our university to disclosure the economic geology. Moreover, members of UNICAMP SEG Student Chapter will play an important role in the organization of this event (http://cms.unige.ch/sciences/terre/research/groups/mineral_resources/latinometal/campinas15/ campinas15.html) We also intend to maintain our schedule of lectures and short courses. Now we aim three short courses for the next year: Ultramafic rocks and mineral deposits (Dr. Cesar Ferreira Filho), A-type granites and mineralization (Dr. Nilson Botelho) and Mineral exploration in greenstone belts (Dr. Johann Hans Daniel Schorscher).
Additionally, we will continue giving support for the academic activities for the undergraduate students such as Opened University for other students (UPA) and Geology week of Unicamp (SEGEU) in order to insert the economic geology in these events.
