General Information For general information related to the profession of dental hygiene, refer to the Bureau of Labor Statistics provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor at http://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/dental-hygienists.htm. What is the class schedule/length for the Dental Hygiene program? The dental hygiene core courses are offered only during the day on a full-time basis. The DH program consists of seven semesters, which requires two years to complete after all program pre-requisites are satisfied. Graduates of the program are eligible, with the approval of the Dental Hygiene Program Director, to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and the CITA Examination, as well as other state or regional Dental Hygiene Board Examinations depending upon requirements. Please Note: Graduates applying for NC Licensure will be required to undergo a criminal records check and fingerprinting. Admission: The Dental Hygiene program begins in the Fall Semester. Admission to the program is based upon completion of all minimum requirements as listed on the attached Minimum Admission Requirements- MARs page by the specified deadline date and the competitive selection process. To begin the admissions process, attend a Starting Points Information Session, complete the admission file (see #1 on MARs page), and meet with an admissions staff member in Student Services. 1

Costs: College tuition is set by the North Carolina State Legislature and is subject to change. Dental Hygiene students are required to purchase a variety of books, instruments, clinic uniforms, malpractice insurance, accident insurance, and other fees as set by the College. The approximate cost for the Dental Hygiene program is $6,000 (this figure reflects in-state tuition rates), plus testing, licensure fees, and equipment costs of approximately $5,000.00. See page 12 for additional information on costs. Financial Aid: All applicants are encouraged to apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Computer Access: Coursework requires ready access to the Internet and to a reliable computer with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and internet access. Upon application to CVCC, students are assigned a CVCC email address. It is the responsibility of the student to open this email account and read it frequently as the College provides crucial program information through this email account. IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING CVCC EMAIL: Your CVCC email account is the primary method of communication between the College and you. Please check your CVCC email regularly. You will be notified by CVCC email of your accepted or non-accepted status via CVCC email within 2-3 months after the deadline date for your program. DENTAL HYGIENE - PSB Information The PSB (Psychological Services Bureau) Exam is specifically designed for those students entering education programs for health professions. The PSB Exam is comprised of a series of tests that measure abilities, knowledge, and aptitudes considered important for successful performance of students in a health program. Dental Hygiene applicants take the PSB for Health Occupations. The PSB is a timed examination and there is a fee. Following is the series of tests which comprise the PSB Exam: Academic Aptitude (verbal, arithmetic, nonverbal) Spelling Reading Comprehension Information in the Natural Sciences Vocational Adjustment Index (scores in this area are not used in the competitive admissions process) Important information regarding the PSB: Scores achieved in the areas listed above, with the exception of the Vocational Adjustment Index, are just one of the criteria used for admission into the program. Results are not pass/fail. PSB scores are valid for three (3) years; however, a hard copy of PSB scores can only be reproduced for up to one year. If a hard copy cannot be obtained, you will need to re-take the PSB Test. An applicant may take the PSB Exam once per academic year (August 1 st July 31 st ). (For applicants who have tested more than once, the higher score will be used.) Scores prior to Jan. 2012 will not be considered. For better overall PSB performance, it is recommended that the applicant take the PSB exam after the science courses have been completed. To take the PSB Exam: The PSB test is given by appointment only. Contact CVCC Testing Center to schedule a PSB appointment at 828/327-7000, extension 4138. Pay the fee in the CVCC Business Office. If you have taken the PSB for Health Occupations, for a different medical program, within the last three (3) months, you may have your scores re-normed for Dental Hygiene, instead of taking the test again. There is a fee for having the score re-normed, which you pay in the Business Office. If your scores are over three (3) months old, you must re-test. (Fee is subject to change.) Want more information on the PSB? - For additional information and sample questions go to: www.psbtests.com The Business Office is located directly across from the Administrative Area in the main building and can be reached at (828) 327-7000 ext. 4276 or by visiting http://www.cvcc.edu/student_services/business_office/.
