Infant Play During Hospitalization Even though your baby is in the hospital, play is still an important part of his development and something he can enjoy with you. Hospitalization is a stressful and sometimes over stimulating experience for babies. It is important to read your baby s cues when timing play experiences. I m ready to play cues include: I need a rest or a break cues include: Eyes wide and bright Smiling and focusing on you when you talk Smooth movements of arms and legs Turning eyes or head towards you Cooing, babbling or talking Raising head Sucking, mouthing or smacking lips Turning head away Crying/fussiness Back arching Pushing away Change in skin colour pale or red skin Yawning Wrinkled forehead Fast breathing Ideas for Play Face games Your baby loves to look at your face. Use big, exaggerated facial expressions, move your face closer and farther away, nod your head up and down or shake from side to side. Add singing or talking to make this a multi-sensory experience. Mirror play Use a small mirror and position so your baby can see herself. Peek over her shoulder so you are also visible in the mirror. Prop the mirror up while your baby is on her tummy to keep her interested in tummy time. Family photos Make a small book of family photos to show your baby. Talk about family members, tell family stories and describe the details of the pictures. Positioning Hold and move your baby in a variety of positions. Rock, sway, swoop, dance and bounce gently around while holding him so he can see your face, then hold him so he is facing outward. Toys Lightweight, brightly coloured rattles and teething toys that your baby can grasp are best. Small infant toys that glitter or light up can be interesting too. Toys with different textures (soft, bumpy, smooth etc.) touched to different body parts provide a sensory experience. Body play Your baby s body provides ample activities for play. Sing/chant finger play songs and nursery rhymes and help your baby move to the motions. Simple exercises such as moving your baby s arms or legs gently up and

down while singing or talking will delight him and encourage body awareness. Help your baby touch different body parts such as cheek, belly button, etc. while you label the words. Books Books are an excellent play time activity that provide a multi-sensory experience as he hears your voice, sees the pictures and touches the pages. Consider choosing sensory books with different textures or a special book that you share together at a certain time each day. Nursery Rhymes Hey Diddle Diddle Hey diddle diddle the cat and the fiddle the cow jumped over the moon. The little dog laughed to see such a sight and the dish ran away with the spoon.
