FACULTY FACULT Y The Honorable Peggy L. Ableman is special counsel in the Products Liability Practice Group of McCarter & English LLP in Wilmington, Delaware. A former Delaware Superior Court judge, she had responsibility for the state s asbestos litigation docket for almost two years. She has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives, the Wisconsin State Judiciary Committee, and the ABA Task Force on Asbestos Litigation on compensation to victims of asbestos exposure. In 2013, she received the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform Judicial Leadership Achievement Award. Anthony J. Alberg, Ph.D., MPH, is professor of public health sciences, Blatt Ness Endowed Chair in Oncology, and the Hollings Cancer Center s associate director of population sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Dr. Alberg s research interests include the health effects of cigarette smoking, the etiology of tobacco- associated malignancies, and tobacco prevention and control. He has authored or co- authored more than 130 peer- reviewed publications related to cancer epidemiology and its prevention. Mary Beth Beasley, M.D., is an associate professor of pathology and head of pulmonary pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Beasley has published 100 book chapters and peer- reviewed articles on various aspects of pulmonary pathology, including the diagnosis of mesothelioma. Dr. Beasley additionally serves on committees and in other leadership roles in several national and international organizations. Bruce T. Bishop of Willcox & Savage PC in Norfolk, Virginia, focuses his practice on asbestos defense, transportation, trucking, aviation, and environmental litigation. He has extensive trial experience in state and federal courts in the defense of toxic torts and product liability claims. He has developed considerable experience in the coordination of mass tort litigation. Mr. Bishop has a national reputation in the medical and state-of-the-art issues associated with toxic tort litigation. He is the program co-vice chair of this seminar. Michael A. Brown is a trial lawyer with Miles & Stockbridge PC in Baltimore, handling complex cases in 15 states around the country for corporations, insurance companies, manufacturers, and hospitals. Mr. Brown has tried nearly 60 cases to verdict in the areas of product liability defense, mass tort litigation, employment law, medical malpractice, insurance defense, and commercial litigation. Michele Carbone, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of pathology and the director of the University of Hawaii Cancer Center in Honolulu. Dr. Carbone leads a multidisciplinary, international team that discovered HMGB1 as a critical mediator of asbestos- carcinogenesis; environmental erionite exposure in the United States; and genetic susceptibility in certain families to mesothelioma. His research led to preventive measures that are expected to save many lives affected by mesothelioma. Lawrence G. Cetrulo is a founding partner of Cetrulo LLP in Boston, chair of its product liability and toxic tort practice groups, and author of Toxic Torts Litigation Guide published by Thomson Reuters. Mr. Cetrulo serves as national coordinating and trial counsel defending claims arising from toxic exposures. He also has over 35 years litigation experience in environmental, auto design defect, product liability, general liability, and insurance coverage matters. His trial experience includes over 150 trials and dozens of arguments before state and federal appellate courts. Evelyn Fletcher Davis is a partner at Hawkins Parnell Thackston & Young LLP in its Atlanta office. She is one of the nation s leading asbestos, silica, benzene, and product liability lawyers, with a strong presence in the Alabama, Florida, and Georgia jurisdictions. Ms. Davis is a board member of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys, and an active member of DRI, FDCC, and IADC. She is the program chair of this seminar. Morton Donald Dubin II is a partner at Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP in New York City, practicing in its product liability group. In the asbestos arena, he represents Union Carbide as part of its national counsel. Mr. Dubin has tried 4
cases for Union Carbide across the United States and is responsible at a national counsel level for coordinating key aspects of the defense, including trial strategy, scientific and medical defenses, product identification fraud initiatives, and punitive damages. William L. Dyson, Ph.D., is a consultant with Workplace Environments LLC in Greensboro, North Carolina. Dr. Dyson is a member and past president of the Academy of Industrial Hygiene, a fellow and former officer of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, a former director and officer of the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, and a former trustee of the American Industrial Hygiene Foundation. His Ph.D. is in environmental health engineering. He was a certified industrial hygienist from 1978 2012. designed, conducted, and published exposure analyses designed to simulate and evaluate historical exposures, and is the author of 25 articles, including several that are asbestos- related. Charles F. Redinger, Ph.D., MPA, CIH, is a principal with Redinger 360 Inc. in Harvard, Massachusetts. He has worked with a variety of organizations, including the U.S. Department of Defense, OSHA, Global 500 Companies, and the ILO and ANSI committees that developed the global standards for risk management. Dr. Redinger has performed complex occupational health risk assessments for the U.S. Public Health Service and Environmental Protection Agency. He is the secretary for the American Industrial Hygiene Association. Sharla J. Frost is the regional managing partner of Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker LLP s Houston office. She has been first chair in more than 40 jury trials and serves on national trial teams for clients in toxic exposure litigation. Ms. Frost is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and past president of Litigation Counsel of America. Catherine E. Goldhaber is a senior shareholder at Segal McCambridge Singer & Mahoney Ltd. in Chicago. She defends insured and self- insured companies in toxic tort litigation, as both national and local trial counsel. Ms. Goldhaber regularly consults on Medicare Secondary Payer Act issues, assisting in resolving related disputes. She is the vice chair of DRI s Medicare Secondary Payer Task Force. Ms. Goldhaber is the program co-vice chair of this seminar. Victor L. Roggli, M.D., is a professor of pathology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He has published more than 185 articles and 35 chapters in textbooks. Dr. Roggli has also written five books, including Pathology of Asbestos- Associated Diseases, 3rd edition. He is a member of the U.S.- Canadian Mesothelioma Panel. His research interests include pneumoconiosis, asbestos- related disease, and analytical electron microscopy. David A. Speziali is a partner at Speziali Greenwald & Hawkins PC in Williamstown, New Jersey. Since 1981, he has managed and tried asbestos- related claims on behalf of dozens of corporate defendants in more than 40 states. He is the director of the Stanford Center for Advanced Lung Disease. Dr. Weill also directs the lung and heart-lung transplant program at Stanford. He has authored numerous publications on various aspects of lung disease, including a paper examining exposure, radiographic changes, and lung function in Libby, Montana, as well as two book chapters related to asbestosrelated diseases.
GENERAL INFORMATION GENERAL INFORMATION CLE/CLAIMS ADJUSTERS ACCREDITATION This seminar has been approved for MCLE credit by the State Bar of California in the amount of 14.5 hours, including 1 hour of ethics credit. Accreditation has been requested from every state with mandatory continuing legal education (CLE) requirements. Certificates of attendance will be provided to each attendee. Attendees are responsible for obtaining CLE credits from their respective states. Application has been made for continuing education for claims adjusters. Credit availability and requirements vary from state to state; please check the DRI website at dri.org for the latest information for your state.
