Amdocs Turbo Charging and IBM Bladecenter blade servers for breakthrough real-time performance 3 Introduction While communication technology and services continue to change and evolve at a furious pace, service providers business needs have remained solid: grow revenues and reduce costs. In emerging markets, mobile operators are experiencing massive growth that results in some of the largest customer bases ever seen. The majority of their revenue streams, however, come from predominantly low-spend prepaid customers. Per unit prices are dropping dramatically to a fraction of those in developed markets, leading to a significant increase in usage for both prepaid and postpaid customers. In such markets, a mobile operator s ability to cost efficiently support subscriber growth while quickly launching new services can have a major impact on the long-term viability of the underlying business model. Operators in developed markets are looking to introduce cutting-edge, convergent services in the face of fierce competition and flattening growth. Add to this the exponential growth of data consumption driven by smartphones and unlimited broadband packages, and the need for affordable scalability and high-end performance becomes critical. Working together, Amdocs and IBM offer cost efficient realtime performance and scalability that service provider s need to successfully face these challenges. Amdocs Convergent Charging based on innovative Turbo Charging technology, lays the foundation for a single real-time charging architecture with outstanding performance across prepaid and postpaid services. IBM BladeCenter blade servers provide a flexible, scalable architecture that enables service providers to maximize performance and minimize costs on an energy-efficient platform that supports the latest POWER6 processor technology.
Amdocs Turbo Charging and IBM Bladecenter blade servers for breakthrough real-time performance 4 Executive summary Amdocs and IBM system specialists performed rigorous certification and benchmarking tests which measured the performance, scalability and stability of the Amdocs Convergent Charging product on IBM BladeCenter JS43 blade servers and several storage configurations. The benchmark results clearly demonstrated the superior real-time charging performance and scalability of Amdocs Convergent Charging over IBM BladeCenter blade servers and both IBM XIV Storage System as well as IBM System Storage DS8300. The results showed a new high water performance mark of 230,000 transactions per second for real-time charging of complex prepaid events. Tests also showed equivalent performance on blade and rack mounted systems which mean that customers can benefit from flexibility in hardware platforms and reutilize existing hardware to achieve the same breakthrough results. Amdocs Convergent Charging was also successfully run with virtualization technologies such as micro-partitioning and virtual I/O server. The combination of Amdocs Convergent Charging and IBM BladeCenter technology allows service providers to achieve hardware cost reduction, flexible scalability as well as optimal software component distribution in installations. Simply put, this means more processing power in less space, with reduced operational costs.
Amdocs Turbo Charging and IBM Bladecenter blade servers for breakthrough real-time performance 5 Amdocs Convergent Charging (based on Turbo Charging technology) for superior real-time charging Amdocs Convergent Charging is Amdocs latest product for convergent, real-time charging. Based on innovative Turbo Charging technology it delivers significant performance improvements in the real-time charging of complex events across prepaid and postpaid events. The product is designed and tested to run on low-cost servers for cost efficient performance and scalability, further reducing hardware requirements Amdocs Convergent Charging uses a single real-time charging technology (Turbo Charging) to process and charge any type of event regardless of network or payment method, delivering true convergence and consolidation across services and lines of business. Turbo Charging technology utilizes several patent-pending innovations in real-time charging that deliver both enhanced performance together with significant reductions in hardware and software costs: Amdocs Convergent Charging reduces the dependency on costly 3rd party software by utilizing an in-house technology for sophisticated in-memory caching known as Amdocs In- Memory Object Store (AIMOS). AIMOS significantly reduces calls to the database and file-system resulting in faster data access and updates. Pre-compiled rating logic code is used to improve rating performance and eliminate the resource intensive reading of XML files. This performance is achieved with no impact on the business flexibility and sophistication of the Amdocs Product Catalog, which means service providers can continue to quickly define, launch and charge for new services and offers. The massively distributed architecture of Amdocs Convergent Charging also eliminates common bottlenecks associated with centralized data management and event processing. An innovative n+1 architecture reduces hardware costs while still providing the redundancy and availability required for mission critical charging processes.
