Introduction The value and importance of education and research to individuals, nations, and our global economy cannot be overstated. The Global Partnership for Education underscores this imperative, stating Education is more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. It is one of the most important investments a country can make in its people and its future and is critical to reducing poverty and inequality. 1 A commitment to education and research excellence is a universal theme played out in nations around the world. Governments, education institutions and research organizations face formidable challenges in achieving this goal. The challenges are diverse and varied, but often include a lack of funding and insufficient access. Educators and administrators are also working tirelessly to support a new paradigm of learning that extends beyond classroom walls and, increasingly, spans a lifetime. Technology factors heavily at every stage of this quest and can play a critical role in achieving student, operational, and research excellence. The choices can be daunting and complex as organizations seek to invest for the long-term by seeking solutions that are robust and flexible to meet today s requirements while flexibly positioning them to take advantage of tomorrow s opportunities. Value and total cost of ownership are also critical considerations. Education and research institutions require technology partners that understand their objectives and unique challenges and can deliver innovative solutions that help them to achieve excellence. 1 http://www.globalpartnership.org/who-we-are/the-value-of-education/ 2

Making the Most of Opportunity Technology is a critical element of modern learning environments of all types. PCs and tablets are as common in many classrooms as books and whiteboards. Software and connectivity are as essential to an education as a library card. It is widely agreed that an education that does not expose students to technology or help them learn to use technology effectively is incomplete. Just as students rely on technology, administrators and educators depend on information technology (IT) solutions to provide connectivity and insight that help them run their increasingly complex institutions as efficiently as possible and support overall effectiveness. As important, the need for information security also has grown commensurate with technology s expanded presence on campuses and across research organizations. The learning environment continues to change rapidly, and educators confront enormous challenges that make their jobs increasingly difficult. At the primary and secondary levels, educators and administrators are working to broaden their focus on student-centered learning so students realize their maximum potential and get the most out of their academic experience. Institutions also face new requirements for effectiveness and accountability, which are driving a new focus on learning assessment; student, teacher, and school performance; as well as knowledge sharing. While student needs and requirements are growing, institutions continue to experience acute budget pressures, which necessitate new levels of operational efficiency as well as financial creativity. As institutions grapple with these funding issues, they must prioritize their many needs from salaries to infrastructure costs. Higher education and research institutions face a shifting landscape, as well, including many of the same funding challenges of their colleagues in the primary and secondary sectors. Institutions are focused on improving their programs and overall attractiveness to students, researchers, and donors/sponsors, while working to drive down costs. Once again, technology factors heavily as institutions work to take advantage of mobile and online channels to serve a new generation of students and research professionals. Research institutions, similarly, are under pressure to produce meaningful analysis in an increasingly competitive research climate and are struggling to optimize the use of big data in their efforts. They are also seeking new ways to support secure, yet expanded collaboration with colleagues within their institutions as well as around the world, while ensuring data preservation. Oracle solutions for education and research are helping institutions around the globe to meet their challenges head on to achieve new levels of excellence. Our flexible solutions give educators, administrators, and researchers new power to succeed in their mission of transforming organizations, communities, and lives. 3
