Dear Applicant, Thank you for your interest in the City of Beverly Hills Historic Preservation Program. This list has been assembled to assist individuals seeking the professional services of an experienced historian, architectural historian, historic preservationist, or historic architect to conduct historic resources survey assessments, prepare City landmark nominations, or assist you with the rehabilitation of your historic building. The firms and individuals listed meet the professional qualifications as outlined by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior s (Historic Preservation) Professional Qualifications Standards for history and/or architectural history. For further information, please contact the staff liaison to the Cultural Heritage Commission or the City Planner. William Crouch, Urban Designer CHC Staff Liaison 310.285.1116 wcrouch@beverlyhills.org Jonathan Lait, AICP City Planner 310.285.1118 jlait@beverlyhills.org Introduction This consultant list is provided as an aid to those seeking the services of a historic preservation consultant. It is published with the understanding that the City of Beverly Hills does not in any way recommend, endorse, or assume responsibility for the quality of work of any individual or firm on this list, nor is there any guarantee, implicit or implied, that any work product produced by those on this list will necessarily meet federal and state requirements. We strongly recommend that you contact at least three consultants when making your selection, and that you check references from previous clients. Inquiring about such factors as the acceptability and timeliness of work performed may provide an indication of how a consultant has performed his or her work for clients. Make certain their expertise is what you need for your particular project. This list is not intended to be all inclusive. It is updated quarterly. The list is available on the City s website at http://www.beverlyhills.org/ citygovernment/departments/communitydevel opment/planning/historicpreservation/ If you or your firm would like to be considered for inclusion in the City s historic preservation consultant list please review the qualifications standards, complete the professional qualifications form for the appropriate discipline, and submit it along with a resume(s) to the CHC staff liaison. The qualifications standards and application form are included within this document. Page 1

GENERAL INFORMATION The identification, evaluation, protection and preservation of the City s important historic resources depends upon the participation of all citizens; however, certain decisions must involve individuals who meet nationally accepted professional standards in order to assure credibility in the practice of historic preservation. Page 2 The City is committed to ensuring that historic resources evaluations and assessments are conducted by qualified professionals. Therefore, all such studies carried out by or for the City of Beverly Hills must be conducted by or under the direct supervision of individuals who meet the Secretary of the Interior s (Historic Preservation) Professional Qualifications Standards for the relevant field of study. These Professional Standards were designed to ensure program quality and satisfy federal, state, and local mandates associated with various historic preservation policies, regulations, and laws. Qualified consultants interesting in working on historic preservation projects in the City of Beverly Hills must have a relevant academic degree or comparable training and professional experience that together demonstrate proficiency in the specific discipline of preservation. This consultant list has been prepared to assist applicants in finding appropriate preservation consultants. FINDING AND HIRING A CONSULTANT The following guidelines for hiring a consultant have been adapted from the guidelines provided by the National Park Service in National Register Bulletin 24, Guidelines for Local Surveys: A Basis for Preservation Planning. Although the Bulletin guidelines were designed to cover large and complex projects and certain points specified may not be relevant, they do provide helpful suggestions for those contemplating projects on a smaller scale. Identify the appropriate professionals; select at least three to interview. Research firms and examine their qualifications and relevant experience. Interview the best prospects. Go over the scope of work; fee rates and any budgetary restrictions; schedule; consultant availability, etc. Request references and/or examples of completed work; check them carefully. Select the best qualified consultant to suit your needs and budget. What s your binding agreement (i.e. contract, etc.)? If you have any questions please contact William Crouch at 310 285 1116. To be considered for inclusion on the City s historic preservation consultant list please submit a resume(s) and the appropriate application form, included in this document, to: City of Beverly Hills Cultural Heritage Commission William Crouch, Urban Design/CHC Staff Liaison Community Development Department, Planning Division
