Again we had a great turnout of 20 cars and for the first time this year we had Chris Jones out in his faithful XR3i, Chris was hoping he had not forgot his way round Oulton Park!, and we were graced with yet another newcomer to the championship this year, this being 21 year old Jack Minshaw in his Demon Tweeks XR2, prepared and run by Valley Motorsport, Jack was keeping up the family tradition in using the Ford XR challenge as his introduction into Motorsport. 2 P a g e
Qualifying Saturday brought along great weather, and with 20 cars on the track it looked like the lap times were going to be very quick. Steve Poole and Cliff Jobson (alias Chris Jones!) had both made the times to beat within a couple of laps, then Peter Lancaster got his act together and slotted his XR2 on pole position never to be beaten. Chris Jones did likewise in the XR3 class. Ralph Fernihough and Lee Shropshire were the first visitors into the pit lane for some adjustments to some area of the car, Jack Minshaw was next into the pitlane with extensive damage to the nearside of his XR2, Jack had been following Lee Bowron round a damp Druids when Lee spun in front of him and Jack did the one thing you should not do mid corner and he came off the throttle which immediately launched him into a spin, only to be stopped by the barriers, a lesson learnt!. The session finished with Pete Lancaster on pole, from Steve Poole, Chris Jones, Simon Sheridan, Mike Heath and an excellent 6 th place from the ever improving Tony Rudd. 3 P a g e

Race 1 The Valley motorsport crew had been kept busy repairing the side of Jack Minshaws XR2 prior to race one, other than that most others had a trouble free time prior to the race. From the lights Peter Lancaster made it into Old Hall corner first, unfortunately a little bit too fast for cold tyres, consequently he had an almighty sideways moment coming out of the corner and with everybody trying to miss him as he weaved from one side of the track to an another all the way down the avenue, how nobody hit him was incredible!. Danny Leigh was not so lucky as he hit the barrier at Knickerbrook, he slowly made it back to the pits to inspect the damage and later continued First across the line on lap one Steve Poole led from Chris (Cliff) Jones, Simon Sheridan, Mike (Flymo) Heath, Tony Rudd and Jason Hennefer, with Pete Lancaster coming through at the rear off the field as did Ralph Fernihough after he also got things wrong on the first lap also at Knickerbrook. 5 P a g e Lap 2 and Poole still led but Jones was much closer and ready to pounce, Sheridan was slowly losing touch with the leaders and falling into the clutches of Heath with Tony Rudd driving the race of his life just behind them, Greg Speight engine had also gone off song and was continuing at a very slow pace. Lap 5 and Poole just lad from Jones, Sheridan and new 4 th place man Pete Lancaster who was on a mission, and was now hunting down the 3 cars in front of him, Heath was 5 th from Rudd, Chris Nylan was also driving an excellent race and had managed to get past Jason Hennefer to claim 2 nd XR3, John Ifan- Jones was not having a good race with smoke
coming from his XR3 and was slowly continuing hoping he finish with some points, it was later discovered to be a head gasket failure, John Biddulph spun at Old Hall and glanced the barrier and retired. Lap 6 and Jones now led only just from Poole who was trying his best to get back his first place, but Lancaster was now in 3 rd place and clearly catching the first 2 cars with Heath and Rudd now in a great battle for 5 th place. Lap 7 and Chris Jones has a good 15 car lead on Steve Poole who now had Lancaster stuck to his rear bumper, other than that the top 6 remained the same. Lap 8, and the top 3 cars were now nose to tail, Jones, Poole and Lancaster, Simon Sheridan was a very lonely 4 th, but further back and another 3 car battle was taking place, this being Mike Heath and Tony Rudd who were so busy with their battle they had not noticed that Chris Nylan had caught them both while they were not looking! Lap 9, Jones still led from new 2 nd place man Lancaster with Poole now 3 rd, Sheridan still 4 th, with Mike Heath doing his usual good deed for the circuit owners and cutting the grass for them from Old Hall down to Cascades! In his efforts in trying to keep Tony Rudd and Chris Nylan behind. At the end of laps Pete Lancaster took a brilliant victory from Chris Jones who was the first XR3 over the line, Steve Poole was 3 rd, from Simon Sheridan, Mike Heath, Tony Rudd in a brilliant 6 th place, and another brilliant 7 th place for Chris Nylan, with Lee Shropshire rounding off the top 8. Race 2 After his accident in race one Danny Leigh was instructed to attend the Medical centre to check out if he had succumbed to any Neck, Head or Brain damage, I think the latter was a foregone conclusion!! John Ifan-Jones had been busy changing a blown head gasket after race one, which with the help of others he managed to do. Due to the reverse grid format Mark Edwards found himself on pole position, Mark was racing for Help the Heroes and all monies he raised went to that great charity, well done to him, Jason Hennefer joined alongside him on the front row, Chris Nylan and Steve McMurrough were absentees as they both had mechanical problems with their cars, Chris was having some loud noises from down below in his engine, so just 18 cars made it for the final round of the championship, Lee Bowron had suspension damage but decided to give it a go and see if it was OK. First to appear into Old Hall for the first time was the MPH Clothing sponsored car of Mark Edwards with Jason Hennefer in close attendance with the rest of the field following through without any incidents with the exception of Terry Kellaher who was doing Mike Heath out of a job as he went round Old Hall on the grass, John Ifan-Jones had to start from the pit as he had not finished the repairs to his XR3 in time. At the end of lap one Steve Poole led the pack, which considering he started on row 9 was absolutely brilliant!, equally as good Chris Jones was in 2 nd place from Jason Hennefer who had Pete Lancaster trying his very best to get past. Lap 2 and Poole now had a very good lead from Lancaster, Jones, Hennefer, Heath and Sheridan, Mike Heath had to retire on this lap at Knicker Brook. Lap 4, Pete Lancaster was right on the rear bumper of Steve Pooles XR2, Steve was trying all he knew to keep Pete behind, Chris Jones was 3 rd, Chris was trying to take out as many marker cones as possible, especially at Old Hall!, 4 th was Simon Sheridan from Shropshire, Fernihough, Rudd, Edwards, Minshaw, Kellaher and the rest of the field. 7 P a g e
Lap 6 and Steve Poole finally succumbed to the pressures from Pete Lancaster who now led the race, Jones was still 3 rd but was coming under pressure from Sheridan, Lee Shropshire had a dose of Brain fade and lost two places to Fernihough and Rudd, Jack Minshaw was really now getting to grips with his XR2 as he led the next pack of cars consisting of Edwards, Kellaher and Leigh. With laps completed Pete Lancaster took another brilliant victory from Steve Poole and the class winning XR3 of Chris Jones, Simon Sheridan claimed 4 th from a very happy 5 th place man Tony Rudd, Ralph Fernihough was 6 th from Lee Shropshire, Jack Minshaw, Terry Kellaher, Danny Leigh, Mark Edwards and new XR3 Champion Jason Hennefer, John Biddulph was 13 th, John Ifan-Jones was a lowly 14 th from Ron Loffstadt. A fitting end to another fantastic Ford XR challenge season, where we have seen grid numbers rise through the year showing that this is still a brilliant championship to be in, not just for the close racing but the atmosphere within the championship which is second to NONE. We have seen new drivers this season in John Ward, Ralph Fernihough, Chris Nylan, John Biddulph, Tony Rudd, Steve McMurrough and Jack Minshaw with Ron Loffstadt, Simon Robinson and Chris Jones joining us on a few occasions. We have also seen many drivers on the top spot of the podium, these being Mark Robinson, Simon Sheridan, John Ifan- Jones, Steve Poole, Chris Flynn, Simon Robinson, Jason Hennefer, Pete Lancaster and last but not least Danny Leigh, well done to you all!. I would also like to thank our sponsors... S&G Response, MPH Clothing and Crown Window Systems. Next year promises to be another exciting championship with hopefully more to offer, Watch this space!!. 8 P a g e
