Brief introduction about the 1 st Arab World conference on public health The theme of the conference Towards Excellence in Public Health: Opportunities and Challenges will offer options for Arab Countries to achieve the MDGs by 2015. The conference will be held in Dubai 4 6 April 2013 Jointly organized and hosted by: Dubai Health Authority (DHA) World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) 2

Summary of the Conference Approximately 400 600 Delegates from Arab countries and around the world are expected to take part in this event: Public health professionals Policy makers Academics and Scientists Educators and programmers Students 3

Objectives The conference will: 1. Serve as a regional forum for exchange of knowledge and experiences on key public Health issues in the Arab countries. 2. Contribute towards promoting and protecting public health at regional and national levels. 3. Create a better understanding and discussion of the Arab world major public health challenges within the global public health community. 4. Facilitate and support the development of the Arab World Public Health Association (AWPHA) 4

Objectives Contd 5. Strengthening national public health systems or public health functions of national health systems. 6. Enhancing the numbers, training and competence of the workforce responsible for public health functions both within and outside the health sector in all countries. 7. Establishing flourishing national associations/societies of public health professionals where they do not exist, and strengthening them further where they do. 5
