1 Dental Public Health Performance Improvement Plan This performance improvement plan is for one of the 21 core programs that comprise the provincial initiative to strengthen the public health infrastructure of all health authorities in-line with an evidence based core functions framework. The purpose of this report is to describe the assessment of the Fraser Health (FH) Dental Public Health practices compared to the provincial Dental Public Health Core Model Program, and outline FH plans to further develop these practices to better match this core model program. The role of health authorities is to deliver services in the areas of: Dental Public Health promotion. Prevention of dental diseases with a focus on prevention of childhood dental disease. Surveillance, assessment and evaluation of dental health status and Dental Public Health programs. The FH performance improvement strategy has been informed by the core model program gap assessment of the health authority s current programs, FH strategic priorities, and provincial programs such as Act Now BC. The key steps of the FH improvement strategy are: Develop a FH Dental Public Guide improvement efforts by defining roles, responsibilities, priorities, and strategies to promote Dental Public Health and prevent and treat those in high risk populations (i.e., Aboriginal, at risk pregnant moms, seniors, those with disabilities, people in care, low income or those with insufficient dental coverage in all age groups). Prevention of Dental Disease - Maintain focus on providing early childhood prevention services while promoting the delivery of essential preventive and treatment services to at risk populations. Surveillance, Assessment and Evaluation - Establish the surveillance, assessment and evaluation practices that are needed. respect caring trust 1/5
2 Performance Improvement Targets Dental Public Health Promotion Developing healthy public policy Clarify role in advocacy for water fluoridation (FH will not become involved in advocating for water fluoridation) Clarify role in advocacy regarding healthy food policies, food action plans, tobacco control, injury prevention and chronic disease prevention Creating Supportive Environments Clarify role in skill building workshops provided to health and family care professionals Clarify role in encouraging the integration of dental training into education standards and accreditation process for allied health professionals Developing Personal Skills Clarify role in educating parents in effective dental practices through collaborative approaches Clarify role in providing public information resources on Dental Public Health practices Strengthening Community Action Clarify FH role in establishing partnerships with community health and respect caring trust 2/5
3 social service agencies /programs to promote Dental Public Health as one component of healthy lifestyle initiatives and chronic disease prevention Clarify FH role in community capacity building among local organizations to facilitate the development of dental services/programs Performance Improvement Targets Prevention of Dental Disease with a focus on prevention of childhood diseases Prevention of Dental Diseases Clarify role in identifying families at risk for having children with dental caries to identify needs and provide 1 to 1 parent education Clarify role in assessing dental risk of young children ranging from surveying to screening Clarify role in collaborating in social marketing campaigns targeted to improve children s dental practices Clarify role in partnering with schools, child care centres, community groups and other stakeholders to raise awareness and develop action plans for promoting effective childhood dental respect caring trust 3/5
