DOCTOR OF PHARMACY (PHARMD PROGRAM) CURRICULUM OUTLINE There are three key course series at the heart of the PharmD curriculum: Applied Science and Therapeutics (AST): These courses introduce and reinforce the integration of the basic and clinical sciences in therapeutic decision-making. This integration is further emphasized in complex disease cases in the pharmacotherapy courses in the third year. Abilities Lab: This series of six courses occurs each semester during the first three years of the curriculum. Self-paced activities include pre-lab readings and study in pharmaceutical calculations, medical terminology, and drug knowledge. Live exercises include participating in lab sessions, discussions, and self-development assignments. This course series is designed to introduce and reinforce contemporary pharmacy practice skills necessary for introductory pharmacy practice experiences within the first three professional years and advanced pharmacy practice experiences in the fourth professional year. Objective Structured Clinical Examinations: This ten-room, state of the art suite provides a formative clinical practice experience to expose students to real-world clinical situations that typify the pharmacist s expanding role in direct patient care. OSCEs are a method of assessing the practice-based abilities of our students in which professional actors serve as standardized patients and as evaluators of student performance in specific pharmaceutical care encounters in both formative and summative sessions. pharmacy.umaryland.edu/pharmd/curriculum
