Current Research Grants Write Start: Development of an Integrated Occupational Therapy Writing Intervention. (2008-2013; IES/Special Education grants) This project developed a handwriting/writing program for first grade students, targeting students at risk for poor handwriting and writing. The intervention embedded occupational therapy services into the classroom, provided explicit handwriting instruction, used peer supports, and emphasized similar principles in the handwriting and writing instruction. LEND: Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (6/1/2012-5/30/2017; Maternal Child Health and Administration of Developmental Disabilities) The training project educates interdisciplinary professional graduate students to provide leadership and best practice services for individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Role: Project faculty Completed Multisite randomized controlled trial of constraint induced movement therapy for children with cerebral palsy. (2008-2010; University of Alabama Birmingham; ACQUIREc foundation) This trial examined the difference between 3 and 6 hours of therapy/day for CIMT intensive therapy using continuous casting on preschool children with unilateral cerebral palsy. This project delivered therapy in the home for one month of daily therapy and included a 6 month follow up. Role: Site Principal Investigator Move-into Learning: Excellence in Engagement (2007-2009; Ohio State University Office of Outreach and Engagement) This project developed and studied the effects of a yoga and embedded arts intervention with at-risk 3rd grade studies in a low socio-economic district of Columbus City Schools. This intervention used mindfulness principals to improve students attention, focus and engagement. IMPACTS (Interdisciplinary Models of Parent and Children Therapeutic Services): Preparation of Special Education, Related Services and Early Intervention personnel to Services Infants, Toddlers, and Children with Low-Incidence. (2001-2006; US Department of Education/ Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services) This project trained occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech, language pathologists, special educators, and nurses to provide best practice early intervention services to infants and families. The emphasis was family centered care and services within the natural environment. Models that link practice, education and research to increase preventive and evidence based practice in the health professions: Allied Health Projects. (2004-2006; Health Resources and Service Administration)
