AUGUST Workshops Introduction to Blackboard Would you like to make the most of your Blackboard site? This workshop focuses on the design, development, and organization of hybrid, traditional, and online course content delivery. We discuss how to set up your Blackboard course site, navigate, organize and manage materials, and available Blackboard features to get you started. Monday, August 24 Friday, August 28 Monday, August 31 1:30pm - 3:00pm (geared for new GTAs) 2:00pm-3:30pm These workshops are conducted in Activities for the First Day of Class to Address Stereotype Threat & Implicit Bias Could you use some strategies for the first day of class that address stereotype threat and implicit bias? Join colleagues for lunch to discuss practical strategies to incorporate on the first day of class to reduce stereotype threat and implicit bias. Monday, August 24 11:30am-1:00pm Clicking with Your Students: Using i>clicker to Enhance Learning Do you have a good strategy for assessing student comprehension during class? i>clicker provides vital information to help gauge student understanding of important concepts. This session will demonstrate how to get started and use i>clicker effectively. Those considering using i>clicker as well as those who just need a refresher will benefit from this session. Assessing Learning Outcomes Could you use some strategies for assessing your learning outcomes? In this workshop, participants will work with colleagues to enhance learning outcomes and build strategies for aligning assessments. Bring a copy of your syllabus with learning outcomes and at least one assessment (e.g., exam, project description, instructions for a paper) to the workshop. Wednesday, August 26 2:00pm-3:00pm Classroom Assessment Techniques Do you want to improve students learning while it s taking place? Join colleagues to explore formative classroom assessment techniques for online, hybrid, and traditional learning environments. We will discuss a number of quick, easy, and effective strategies that engage students and improve learning. Friday, August 28 10:00am-11:00am Student-Centered Teaching Methods Are students getting the most out of your teaching? Not all teaching methods are equally effective. Research indicates that some teaching methods have a greater influence on student learning. In this workshop we will focus on empowering instructors with skills, tools, and processes for implementing evidence-based teaching practices in their courses. Monday, August 31 11:30am - 1:00pm

PROGRAMS Mid-semester Assessment Program The Mid-semester Assessment Program (MAP) is a great opportunity for an instructor of record to get student feedback about the course while it s in progress. It is a voluntary and confidential service offered by the OTL, and feedback is provided only to the instructor. The MAP follows a specific sequence: a consultation, a class visit to gather students perspectives, and a follow-up meeting to review students feedback and to identify any instructional strategies and resources that may be helpful. The Office for Teaching & Learning (OTL) sponsors a monthly writing retreat for faculty by offering a quiet, comfortable space to make progress on your writing projects. You could build an outline, sort notes, organize, edit, draft, or continue works in-progress. The OTL will provide space, laptops upon request, coffee breaks, and lunch. Learn Why Capable People Suffer From Imposter Syndrome & How They Can Thrive In Spite of It Dr. Valerie Young Dr. Young is an internationally-known speaker and a leading expert on the imposter syndrome. Combining insightful analysis with effective advice and anecdotes, she explains what the impostor syndrome is, how you can recognize the ways it manifests in you and your students, and strategies for addressing it. More details forthcoming University Libraries staff (e.g., liaisons, digital publishing) will be available to assist you in locating and accessing resources, identifying publishing venues and provide support for citation management applications. WORKSHOPS Getting Started with Camtasia Studio Are you curious about the process to record a video using Camtasia? This hands-on workshop will cover the basics of recording and editing a video using Camtasia Studio. Participants will have the opportunity to record a short video and edit it using Camtasia Studio 8. Topics in this workshop include setup tips, recording audio, basic editing techniques and adding special effects. In addition, participants will learn how to package and distribute their video using Camtasia. 10:00am 11:30am Facilitating Group Interaction to Enhance Student Learning Could you use some strategies for developing and managing group projects in your course? Join colleagues to discuss frame works for designing group activities, identify ways to assess group progress, and review assessment strategies. Rubrics can help ensure consistent and impartial grading. They categorize evaluation criteria for an assignment and convey your expectations for the quality of completed assignments. Join colleagues to learn how to create, edit, and grade with rubrics using Blackboard. 3:00pm 4:30pm Introduction to Grade Center Want to learn more about the tools and capabilities of Black board Grade Center? Join colleagues to discuss the multiple features of Grade Center and learn how to use them. This inter active workshop is for all familiarities with Grade Center, from getting started to more advanced functions like using the Needs Grading page to increase instructor efficiency. Tuesday, September 8 Using Blackboard Collaborate to Engage Students How can you engage students using Blackboard Collaborate? Whether teaching in a traditional, hybrid, or online course, many faculty consider live, personal interaction to be the most valuable element of quality teaching and learning. This hands-on workshop covers many of the advanced features of the Blackboard Collaborate online collaboration tool in Blackboard, including: sharing your computer desktop or a web page during an online presentation, breaking students into breakout rooms for small group discussion, and best practices of conducting online office hours using Blackboard Collaborate. Thursday, September 10 2:00pm 3:30pm Online Active Learning in an Online Environment Does your online course actively engage students? Come learn how you can incorporate active learning strategies into your online or hybrid class. In this workshop, you will learn the definition of active learning, receive tips and techniques for engaging your virtual students and discuss the types of activities that research has shown to enhance learning and keep students actively engaged. 5 4:00pm 5:00pm Evidence Based Teaching Methods Are you ready to get started with evidence-based teaching practices? Let us help you! In this workshop we will focus on taking a content element of your class and converting it to an effective studentcentered activity. We will take a micro and macro approach by first sharing strategies for getting to know students in our courses and, second, by considering what may be gleaned from the latest CIRP* Freshman Survey results. (*Cooperative Institutional Research Program, UCLA). Thursday, September 17 Engaging Students through Blackboard Would you like to make the most out of the interactive tools in Blackboard? This workshops focuses on what are the interactive tools in Blackboard, and identifying similarities and differences between the discussion board, blogs, journals, and wikis, as well as potential uses of these tools for engaging students. Friday, September 18 1:00pm 2:30pm Engaging Students with Video using Camtasia Would like to make your video lectures more exciting and keep your audience actively engaged? Attend this workshop to learn how to use the advance editing techniques in Camtasia Studio to create engaging videos by adding captions, animations, interactive quizzes, and more. In this workshop, we will also look at the options for publishing video content for online and mobile delivery. In the first Getting Started with Camtasia Studio workshop participants learned how to use Camtasia to record video lectures and screencast. In this advance workshop, we will continue building your skills with video editing and publishing. This is an advance workshop and participants should have some basic knowledge of using Camtasia Studio. Wednesday, September 23 2:00pm 3:30pm Inclusive Course Design Do you use an intentional approach for designing and sustaining an inclusive classroom? In this workshop, we will look at a framework that is useful for multicultural course design across disciplines and course levels. Engage with your WSU colleagues in an interactive discussion on strategies and practical techniques for aligning course outcome goals, assessments, and learning activities in an inclusive teaching and learning environment. Thursday, September 24 Introduction to Online Teaching & Learning Are you new to online teaching? Would you like to learn more about the unique characteristics of online teaching and learning? Join colleagues to discuss the critical differences between online and face-to-face courses, including faculty and student expectations, role adjustments, and course design and evaluation. Participants will leave session with frameworks for getting started in online course development. Monday, September 28 10:00am 11:00am Writing Effective Exams Do your exams effectively measure what you want your students to learn? Have you ever asked what actual skills your questions ask the students to perform? How do you assess whether your exam was a good measure of student learning? In this workshop we will discuss strategies to help you align your exams with the measurement of your course learning outcomes. These tools will help you write your exams faster and be more intentional in the design of exam questions. Facilitated by Dr. Andrew Feig and Dr. Peter Hoffman. Tuesday, September 29 Designing Courses for Significant Learning: Part I, Constructing Effective Learning- Centered Outcomes What do you want to be most certain students learn in and remember from your course? Participants in this workshop will use Integrated Course Design, a framework to articulate and incorporate deeper facets of learning into their course design (e.g., integration and learning to learn). It is particularly useful as a guiding framework for course design and assessment. This is the first workshop in a three-part course design series.
