SISEP: State & Scaling-up of Evidence-based Practices SISEP is a National Technical Assistance Center Funded by the U.S. Department of Education s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) SISEP assists States, School Districts and Schools in applying implementation science through building sustainable implementation infrastructures SISEP s goal is to support a system that effectively employs evidence-based practices to improve student outcomes State & Scaling-up of Evidence-based Practices EBPs Students cannot benefit from interventions they do not receive. 3

& Scaling-up Evidence-Based Practices GOAL Improved Outcomes for ALL Students & Scaling-up Evidence-Based Practices Building & improving the infrastructure to deliver effective practices. Building capacity in the system to reach each student and address their unique strengths and needs. 4

How Science Adds Value to Our System Formula for Success WHAT Effective Innovations HOW & WHO Effective WHERE Enabling Contexts WHY Educationally Significant Outcomes 2012 Dean Fixsen and Karen Blase, National Research Network 5

How SISEP Works SISEP provides States and Districts with: Intensive technical assistance to establish an effective & affordable infrastructure for implementation of evidence-based programs & practices (EBPs) Coordinated and shared professional learning via webinars and communities of practice Online and off-line coaching, teaching and learning about implementation, scaling, and system reinvention Tools and resources for conducting this work, including formative and summative evaluation tools for action planning, monitoring and outcome assessment Active Frameworks Fixsen, D. L., Naoom, S. F., Blase, K. A., Friedman, R. M. & Wallace, F. (2005). Research: A Synthesis of the literature. NIRN. 6

Applying Frameworks Why SISEP? Washington s Goal: To build a statewide system that deliberately and consistently implements effective K-12 education practices to improve student outcomes * The system s process is maintained even if the members or initiatives change. Initial Focus: Early Literacy Initiative (K-4 ELA) Inclusion of Students with Disabilities and IEPs Inclusion of Buildings in School Turnaround 7

Linking Teams Framework Teams leverage implementation science principles and systems change best practices to support the widespread and systematic use of evidence-based programs and practices. Teaming to Build Capacity for Scaling State ESDs Districts Schools Classrooms Students & Families 8
