Introduction DET is providing a remote Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) service offering to agencies as a means of protecting computer equipment from power-related issues and a limited duration of extended battery power during local power outages. This service is only available to State agencies that have selected DET-managed consolidated services. This service has the following criteria: DET requires UPS protection for local file servers (that UPS is included in the general remote server rate). DET does not require UPS protection for local print appliances. DET does not require UPS protection for network equipment. UPS battery replacements are generally required within 2 3 years. DET-managed UPS devices are not allowed on Telco vendor equipment. What Is Included Identification of specific models of UPS devices to be supported by this service offering Procurement of UPS devices, batteries, and network interface cards UPS installation UPS configuration UPS asset tracking UPS monitoring UPS maintenance to include battery replacement and UPS replacement, when required UPS incident response Maintain spares inventory Network Interface Cards (NIC) What Is Not Included Acquisition, installation and maintenance of large-scale building or computer room UPS devices (e.g., Liebert, PowerWare) UPS devices utilized on equipment other than DET-supported servers, print devices, switches, routers, and other DET-managed computer equipment (e.g., telco equipment, agency-managed desktops). Benefits Provides short-term uninterruptible power to an agency s DET-managed computer equipment that may have dirty or otherwise poor power, preventing unwanted outages Does not require that the agency implement a tool for monitoring of UPS devices to identify problems or potential failure Requires less agency support and FTE time Allows the agency staff to concentrate on their business needs Service Description UPS services provide uninterruptible, clean power to agency devices in offices and facilities that may not otherwise have a UPS installed. This service allows agencies to determine technical or business requirements for continuous uninterruptible power and jointly with DET determine which predefined UPS device should be installed to meet capacity requirements while knowing that DET is monitoring, managing, and maintaining the devices. Service Period July 1 through June 30. Reviewed and renewed annually. Roles and Responsibilities Roles and Responsibilities for the UPS service can be found here. Performance Metrics (Monitoring/Alerting/Reporting) DET monitors all UPS for up/down, diagnostics failed trap, and battery needs replacement trap. Each UPS gets classified into one of three groups in the HP OpenView Network Node Manager (NNM), which determines how e-mail alerts and tickets are handled: 1. Network Device UPS a. Up/down alerts generate normal tickets to the Enterprise Service Desk (ESD); e-mail alerts are sent to Network Support staff and the ESD b. Traps generate normal tickets to network support staff; e-mail alerts are sent to network support staff 2. File Service and Print Appliances UPS a. Up/down alerts generate normal tickets to the ESD; email alerts are sent to Windows server team and the ESD b. Traps generate normal tickets to Windows server team; e-mail alerts are sent to Windows server team UPS SOD 5 Last updated: 8/24/2009
3. Miscellaneous UPS a. Up/down alerts and traps do not generate tickets; e-mail alerts are sent to Network Support staff and Windows server team How Services Are Charged There are two UPS rates: 1. Small-to-Medium UPS, which supports 1000-1500 Volt Ampere (VA) Output Capacity 2. Large UPS, which supports 1500-3000 Volt Ampere (VA) Output Capacity Each UPS is billed monthly through the Enterprise Billing System. If a site subscribes to a DET service offering that requires a UPS, the rate for that service offering includes the UPS. There is NOT be an additional charge for the onsite UPS. A Remote File Server is an example of a DET service offering that requires a UPS. Please see the IT Services Rate Sheet for rate information. Cost-Saving Tips Right-size the UPS device according to required capacity. Installing the correct capacity device provides a more reliable cost-effective solution. Keep the area around the UPS device free of clutter and water to allow for airflow and unnecessary damage to the UPS. This helps extend the lifespan of the UPS and batteries and prevents unnecessary outages which may potentially affect business functions. Notes: UPS SOD 6 Last updated: 8/24/2009
