2014 CMC Foundation Donors Edition In this issue: Love Lights Light up CMC Annual Tree/ Wreath Auction Results Highlighting the CMC Endoscopy Department Bringing CMC Foundation News to You! A publication of the Conway Medical Center Foundation February 2015 Love Lights Lit up the Holiday Season at CMC Honoring Loved Ones to Benefit the Community Outreach Fund Conway, SC The CMC Foundation began the 2014 holiday season with the ceremonial lighting of the Love Lights Trees in the lobby of Conway Medical Center. The trees were adorned with special lights that could be purchased for a small fee in honor or in memory of loved ones. Three trees respectively represented individuals who were honored by loved ones, individuals who were memorialized by loved ones, and individuals who had served (or were currently serving) in the military. A brief lighting ceremony took place on November 25 th and was well attended by friends and family of CMC. Berns, Executive Director of the Foundation, said a few words explaining how funds received from the lights would be of so much assistance to the community outreach fund. Marianne, Chair of the CMC Foundation Board of Directors, addressed the importance of this fund, and how it is able to help so many folks right here in our community. memorial tree was adorned with a white ribbon; and, the honoring tree was adorned with a gold ribbon. A Remembrance Book identified the names of everyone who was honored, and included the person or persons who purchased the lights. It was displayed on a podium near the trees for all to peruse. Pages of the book were updated alphabetically as honorariums came in. Folks gathered after the ceremony for light refreshments. A Star Was Born It s All for the Kids Global Kids Health Issues Highlights: Endoscopy Department CMC Foundation 2014 Revenue Distribution The switch was pulled and the trees lit up in harmony. The military tree was adorned with a patriotic colored ribbon; the The trees remained lit throughout the Christmas and New Year holidays. The CMC Foundation is pleased to report that the program was able to raise $4,470 for the Community Outreach Fund. Mr. reiterated his appreciation to all who contributed to the Love Lights Trees, and is looking forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come. Critical Care Unit Wins the Annual Tree/Wreath Auction Creativity Ruled at This Year s Fundraiser! Speaking of trees! What s so special about this tree? Why did it win the annual Tree/Wreath Auction? Because it was decorated with $330 worth of GIFT CARDS to local merchants! The winning bid of $260 took this creative and generous tree home. Second Place was shared between Maternity and the Foundation/Marketing trees, each of which went for $250. Guests and visitors were also able to participate in the auction which was held on December 11, 2014 in the private dining room next to the cafeteria. This annual event was a success and raised $3,560 for the Healthreach Program. Berns, Blakely, and Ellen are grateful and amazed at the creativity and generosity of all of the employees at CMC. Every year, the bar is set a little higher and everyone is looking forward to next December s entrants. Global Kids' Health Issues Huge progress has been made in many critical areas involving children's health. Yet there is still important work to be done, and most of it doesn't involve expensive new drugs or surgical procedures. Instead, it's about the basics that most of us take for granted. Fighting Poverty Can you imagine living on less than $2.50 a day? It doesn't seem possible, yet that's the reality for almost half the world's population more than 3 billion people. And 1.4 billion of those are in extreme poverty, earning less than $1.25 a day. In developing countries, poverty means starvation, disease, squalid living conditions, unclean water and poor sanitation, limited or no access to education and medical care, and high crime rates. Seven countries account for 65% of the world's hungry: India, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bangladesh, and Ethiopia. But it's not just people in developing countries who struggle about 15% of Americans fall below the poverty line ($23,492 for a family of four); and 44% of those (20.4 million, or 6.6% of Americans) live in deep poverty, which is defined as an income 50% or more below the poverty line. Children suffer the most in poverty-stricken areas. According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day because of poverty-related causes. Almost 30% of all children in developing countries are thought to be underweight or have stunted growth, with South Asia and sub-saharan Africa especially hard hit. This feeds the cycle of poverty, as these kids are less likely later to be able to earn a living wage to support themselves and their families. The issue of extreme poverty was at the forefront of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) developed in 2000. In this global partnership, world leaders committed their nations to eliminating poverty and hunger, which would help ensure the right of "each person on the planet to health, education, shelter, and security." MDG 1 is to "eradicate extreme poverty and hunger." Much progress has been made since then, but poverty and food insecurity still mean that an estimated 842 million people about 1 in 8 suffer from chronic hunger. Often, reading about or seeing the effects of poverty make people to want to help especially around the holidays. Although it can be hard to know where to start, numerous charities and organizations have stepped up to fight the many facets of poverty. Even families with little or no extra money to donate can contribute in other ways for example, showing support via social media, organizing an event and donating the funds raised, and educating others. How WE Can Help If you want to help fight poverty within our own community, consider contributing to the CMC Smart Snacks Program. Smart Snacks has been in operation since March of 2005 and has provided over $274,000 in provisions for children in Horry County. The total funding for this year s Smart Snacks Program is projected to be at least $59,500. There are currently over 380 students on a waiting list from the combined schools listed above. CMC Foundation Highlights.Endoscopy Department, Conway Medical Center By Dawn Lyles, RN [Editor s note: This is the first in a series of articles highlighting various departments within Conway Medical Center to inform our readers about new innovations, techniques, and/or events happening within the CMC campus.] Most people equate an endoscopy with colonoscopy procedures looking for polyps or upper endoscopy procedures for heartburn or ulcers ; however the Endoscopy Department at CMC has rapidly expanded to provide services that previously were performed at referral centers or required Endoscopy to travel to other departments within CMC. Three board certified gastroenterologists, four board certified surgeons and two board certified pulmonologists utilize CMC Endoscopy Department to perform procedures to diagnose and treat diseases of the GI and Respiratory Systems. Pulmonary services include diagnostic bronchoscopy, endoscopic bronchoscopy ultrasound guided biopsy, (EBUS), and in the fall of 2014 endoscopic navigational bronchoscopy (ENB) was added. EBUS and ENB procedures allow the pulmonologist to reach out further into the lung than conventional bronchoscopy providing earlier diagnosis, staging, and treatment of lung cancers. Gastrointestinal procedures assist the physician with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of esophagus, stomach, small bowel, and colon. Those include diagnostic and therapeutic upper endoscopies, colonoscopies to including screening colonoscopies for detection of polyps and/or colon cancer, capsule endoscopy to study the small bowel, small bowel enteroscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) procedures and the insertion of percutaneous feeding tubes (PEG/PEJ tubes). Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is done to evaluate conditions of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas. Common procedures performed include ERCP to remove common bile duct stones or the insertion of stents to treat bile leaks or relieve obstruction. Coordination between Radiology and Endoscopy allows for this procedure to be performed in Endoscopy. Endoscopic Ultrasound procedures allow for the diagnosis and staging of cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, rectum and certain lung cancers. EUS is also used to evaluate chronic pancreatitis or other abnormal CT studies. Coordination between the Endoscopy and Pathology Departments allow for on site rapid read which assists the physician performing ENB, EUS or EBUS procedures in knowing they have obtained adequate tissue for diagnosis and staging. Based on microscopic findings, the physician can provide more information to the patient prior to discharge. Patients with obstructive cancers can undergo stent placement in areas such as the bile ducts, small bowel and colon to relieve distention, jaundice and pain associated with this disease. On the radar for 2015 is the addition of BRAVO, a capsule based ph monitoring study for patients who suffer with heartburn and regurgitation. In 2013 we added anesthesia services in the Endoscopy Department. This allows for procedures to be performed in the department on an outpatient or inpatient status. Previously patients who received the more specialized procedures were required to go to the OR for anesthesia. Staffing in the department consists of specialty trained registered nurses, ENDO techs, and nursing assistants. Presently the department performs an average of 500 procedures monthly. The department is located in the North Tower and we offer state of the art technology and accommodations to promote patient privacy. The Gastrointestinal (GI) Patient Fund was founded to help underprivileged/impoverished patients needing endoscopic procedures. It is administered by the Conway Medical Center Foundation. A Star Was Born. It was such a thrill to put a star up on the wall in my great granddaughter s name, said Joan Bonnello, who traveled all the way from Feeding Hills, Massachusetts to celebrate with her family. Her great granddaughter, Keira Michele Trox was born at Conway Medical Center on August 20, 2014. It was a special occasion for four generations to celebrate. And most importantly, Mrs. Bonnello had the honor of hanging her star on the mural wall. For more than four generations, Conway Medical Center has helped parents throughout Horry County welcome new babies into the world. And CMC has developed this unique program to commemorate the birth of loved ones born at CMC. Through this recognition program, A Star Is Born, parents, grandparents and family and friends can celebrate the gift of a new life while truly making a difference in the lives of others through a $50 donation. The star is permanently engraved with the baby s name and date of birth. This offer extends to everyone born at Conway Medical Center. It s All for the Kids Capri Sun & Smart Snacks In September, Stacey Mott from Healthreach and Blakely Roof from the Foundation addressed the Conway Rotary about Healthreach. The Rotarians were particularly interested in the CMC Smart Snacks Program and wanted to conduct a drive in support of the program. So during the month of November their club collected 50 cases of Capri Sun! In addition, one of the Conway Rotary members, Eddie Richardson, encouraged his workplace, Goldfinch Funeral Home, to do a drive on their own. And THEY donated 140 cases of Capri Sun! The total number of Capri Suns donated during the drive and shortly after was 1,666 which was enough Capri Sun to last through February. As you can see, the Healthreach screening services, provided by medical personnel who travel on the Healthreach van to rural areas in Horry County to assist in screening efforts for the underserved, require the most amount of funding.
