Managing information systems has become a task for all levels of managers and all function areas of the business. This course is designed to familiarize students with the concepts related to the utilization of information technology in business organizations. It will focus both on technical and managerial aspects of information technology adoption in the organization. Topics such as information technology infrastructure, electronic commerce, information systems and business strategy, ethical issues related to information systems will be covered in class. The course should provide the student with knowledge of the core principles of MIS, focusing on breadth rather than depth of knowledge. Learning activities will include case studies, group assignments, and application software exercises that will provide an opportunity to apply MIS concepts to real-world applications. The purpose of the quizzes is to ensure that students keep up with readings. They will test your understanding of the main concepts discussed in the assigned readings and class activities. Quizzes can be held at any time during the class period, so DON T BE LATE. Individual Assignments 1- Technology literature report For this assignment, students will find and present articles related to information technology in organizations. Presentations will take place during the semester based on the topic assigned to each student. 2 - Database assignment - By using Microsoft Access software, students will develop a database for a given scenario. Assignments are due at the beginning of the class on the date specified. Late submissions will be accepted, but they will be penalized 10% each day, beginning the day it is due. Group Project Groups of 3-4 students will be formed at the beginning of the semester. The group project involves information technology and or IS in a real life organization. Your group should find an organization, analyze its activity and develop a proposal for a new information system/product to meet the organizational needs or to improve the existing information system. The purpose of this project is to apply the theoretical concepts and technical skills we learn in class in a real life situation, develop analytical and critical skills in the context of information technology as well as the ability to work in a team. You will work on the project throughout the semester and in addition to a written report, your team will present the project to the class towards the end of the semester. 3
After the completion of the project, each team member will complete a peer evaluation form. Your grade for this assignment will be weighted based on peer evaluations. Class participation and activities Students are expected to attend classes regularly and participate in class discussions and exercises. During the semester there will be several class activities, where you will participate individually or in group. You may be asked to complete some of these assignments outside the class and discuss them in the following class. Exams There will be four exams that will cover anything discussed in class, lectures and readings. The format of the exams will be True/False, multiple-choice and short essay questions. Grading policy: A 90-100% B 80-89.90% C 70-79.90% D 60-69.90% F 0-59.90% ROLE OF CIS 3630 IN CIS MAJOR Students successfully completing the CIS major will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of professional and ethical expectations in the work place. 2. Use productivity software (word processing, spreadsheet, and database) effectively and manage hardware and software resources by applying knowledge of operating systems and environments. 3. Develop application software using skills in appropriate business programming languages (e.g. COBOL, Visual Basic, Java) 4. Develop and maintain databases using theoretical and applied knowledge of relational database management systems (e.g. Oracle, DB2). 4
5. Develop and maintain telecommunications networks using theoretical and applied knowledge of telecommunications (e.g. Novell, Windows/NT). 6. Analyze business problems and develop solutions by applying critical thinking skills within the systems development process (e.g. The Systems Development Life Cycle [SDLC] and Information Engineering. 7. Be a team player by applying group process skills: participate fully in group discussion and activities, lead/follow when appropriate, provide support and collaboration when needed. 8. Access information resources and communicate effectively using a variety of methods: oral, written, and electronic. 9. Design and construct client/server applications by using appropriate tools and architectures and develop effective graphical user interfaces (GUIs). 5
