dk3 is a furniture design concept that emphasizes natural aesthetics. The true aesthetic is natural, not man made We create uniquely designed furniture that is shaped by nature and crafted by true enthusiasts. Always with a focus on personality, pride and sustainability. It is a vision of uniting the finest carpentry traditions with modern and classical furniture design through the fusion of timeless steel or brass components and high quality wood. The love of the organic material and uncompromising focus on quality is evident throughout the process, from the first design sketches to working in the carpentries in Denmark, where the furniture is finished and surface treated by hand. Established in 2009, dk3 is exporting to more than 25 countries. dk3 is available in the finest lifestyle boutiques in New York City, London, Paris, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Tokyo, Taipei, Seoul, Sydney, Mexico City and many more cities and it is with great pride, that we manufacture furniture pieces from such great Danish designers as Kaare Klint, Børge Mogensen, Poul Cadovius and more. dk3 consists of two main collections: The Contemporary Collection and the ROYAL SYSTEM shelving system - designed by Danish designer Poul Cadovius in 1948. 4 Please also visit www.dk3.dk for more inspiration.

Tree Table Design by Jacob Plejdrup 2011 20

Tree Table Tree Table is a perfectly balanced natural design. On top of the simple steel construction lies solid wooden planks shaped by nature and fashioned by the industry s most skilled hands. The table combines true craftsmanship and innovative engineering, and the result is visually striking. The table is made of solid planks of smoked oiled oak, light natural oak or American walnut. Each plank has its own form and structure, and the cracks and knots provide a unique table top. All knots are filled in order to preserve a user-friendly surface, and the natural edge is gently hand-sanded. Each Tree Table is individually numbered, and a discrete steel plate on the table s edge testifies to the table s originality. The Tree Table can be made up to 450 cm in length. 22 On so called plank-days we invite buyers to the factory in Hundtofte on the Isle of Funen in Denmark to select their own planks for their dream table. dk3-founder and Tree Table Designer Jacob Plejdrup is present with advice and guidance. Plank-days are published on dk3. dk, and if the trip to Funen is too long, you can either find pictures of already finished planks on dk3.dk to choose from or we custom make new planks.

Plank Sofa Design by Hindernes/Berg/Knudsen&Myhr 2013 34

Plank Sofa Having spotted the Plank Sofa at a design show in Bergen/Norway in the fall of 2012, dk3 founder and owner, Jacob Plejdrup, instantly fell in love: If dk3 is ever to make a sofa, this has got to be it, he thought. He approached Steinar Hindernes, Anders Berg, Petter Knudsen and Frode Myhr - the Norwegian designers behind the Plank Sofa - and during the course of the dialogue he was delighted to find out that the idea behind the Plank Sofa was based on the world famous floor planks from Danish DINESEN. The concept behind the Plank Sofa is a fascination of the solid broad floor planks from DINESEN, and a wish to develop these enormous dimensions of solid wood into new products. The thick solid wooden base and back represent the main construction and create an impression of lightness and fluidity - Hindernes/Berg/Knudsen/Myhr The Plank Sofa is available in DINESEN Douglas Fir, normal European oak and American walnut. The legs are available in wood with or without brass or stainless steel and we offer a wide range of leather and fabrics for the cushions. The Plank Sofa was officially launched in Oslo, London and Seoul in the fall of 2013.

Church Chair The Church Chair: one of Danish furniture design s icons In 1936 Kaare Klint designed one of Danish furniture design s icons the Church Chair for the Grundtvigskirken (Grundtvigs-Church) in Copenhagen. His famous architect father, Jensen-Klint, was responsible for the construction of this church. The Church Chair is a challenge for any skilled carpenter: There are no right angles on the Church Chair and the chair requires high accuracy in all manufacturing processes. All four pieces on the back of the chair have different angles in order to suit the human spine and the seat is envelope woven paper cordel treated with soap and wax, and thus stain resistant. A design icon from generations ago for generations to come. Kaare Klint stands today as a father figure for modern Danish furniture design. In 1924 he became a lecturer at the Academy of Art and started a whole new line of furniture design that was based on his thoughts and ideas. These new thoughts, he passed on to his students, including amongst others, Hans J. Wegner and Børge Mogensen. Kaare Klint was among the first to create a partnership between the Carpentry Guild and furniture designers. This collaboration led to the fact, that the vast majority of Danish furniture classics are made of wood. 50

58 ROYAL SYSTEM

An artist and his masterpiece ROYAL SYSTEM shelving system was designed in 1948 by legendary Danish designer and manufacturer Poul Cadovius. It was one of the world s first wall-hung furniture systems, and the idea that furniture should not use floor space was innovative. Most of us live on the bottom of a cube. If we put the walls even with the floor, we get a lot of space to live on was the mantra of Poul Cadovius. There have been many attempts to copy this famous design, but ROYAL SYSTEM is and remains the original. ROYAL SYSTEM was produced at Poul Cadovius factory in Randers (Denmark), where up to 300 people were employed. ROYAL SYSTEM was also produced under license in more than 30 countries and is considered one of Danish furniture history s greatest successes ever. Poul Cadovius is one of the most colourful and successful personalities in Danish furniture industry s history. Architect, designer, self-taught inventor, manufacturer, innovator, the furniture industry s enfant terrible - the titles are many, as the author Henriette Houth writes in her book Kassebogen. Poul Cadovius was ambitious and constantly seeking. When he wasn t designing or producing furniture, he was driving racing cars or building luxury yachts at his own Saghitta shipyard in Svendborg. And the stories are many: When a sailboat customer claimed poor sailing-performance on a Saghitta 35 from the yard, Poul Cadovius had the ultimate retort. He borrowed the boat and sailed in a race around Zealand - and won! Poul Cadovius took out over 400 patents - the last as a 90-year-old. Both his life and designs testify to a genuine figure that went his own way - to the delight of us all. In 2010, dk3 re-launched the ROYAL SYSTEM in contemporary materials such as walnut, oak, and high pressure laminate. ROYAL SYSTEM can be ordered individually as a classic bookcase, modern desk or library with different cabinet modules. The timeless spirit of ROYAL SYSTEM is preserved through the well known stringers, hangers, shelves and beautiful cabinets. And all of exquisite quality, created for modern interior design and future needs.

❶ Jacob Plejdrup, 1972 ❶ ❷ ❸ A multicultural life in Denmark, England, Germany and Switzerland has had a decisive influence on Jacob Plejdrups design philosophy and form of understanding. As early as 1991 Jacob Plejdrup began his career in the furniture and interior design industry, and from the very beginning it was clear that his creative ideas and designs were something special. This culminated in 2009, when Jacob founded dk3 to place his undivided focus on nature s aesthetic elements together with pure and timeless lines. ❷ Knudsen/Berg/Hindenes & Myhr Knudsen/Berg/Hindenes&Myhr from Norway consists of Petter Knudsen, Anders Berg, Steinar Hindenes and Frode Myhr. They are all educated at Bergen Academy of Art & Design. Knudsen/Berg/Hindenes&Myhr mainly works with furniture, product- and interior designs, but is also involved in a series of project based design initiatives. In partnership with manufacturers, they aim to create material and production driven objects with a distinct character. ❸ Søren Juul, 1943-2013 Søren Juul has had a lifelong experience within both design and architecture. He was trained as a cabinetmaker, then studied as a furniture designer at the Design School in Copenhagen and the architect school in Aarhus, where he subsequently was employed by architects Friis & Moltke fore more than 40 years. Here he dealt primarily with furniture, lamps and fixtures for schools, colleges, hotels, offices etc. The design according to Søren Juul, should be simple, functional and honest and the quality should be no less than perfect. ❹ Poul Cadovius, 1911-2011 Poul Cadovius was born in Frederiksberg, Denmark in 1911 and was originally trained as a saddler and upholsterer. He was a colourful and successful designer with a marked influence on the Danish furniture industry and furniture design - both in his own time and later. In 1948, Cadovius designed the shelving system ROYAL SYSTEM, which through the 50s, 60s and 70s perhaps was the largest furniture success Danish furniture industry has ever had. Poul Cadovius died in 2011 at the age of 99. During his life he managed to register over 400 individual patents, and we are proud to ensure that his legacy lives on. ❺ Asger Soelberg, 1978 ❼ ❺ ❻ Asger Soelberg has since 2004 worked as an independent self-taught designer and consultant for product developing institutions at home and abroad. Asger works with design as an evolutionary tool and sees new knowledge as a front-runner for the movement that will ultimately change and improve our lives. As a designer Asger works in a strategic and process oriented way towards simple solutions to complex challenges. Always looking for a design with an overall greater value than the sum of its building blocks - and always with a touch of magic. ❻ Kaare Klint, 1888-1954 Kaare Klint stands today as a father figure for Danish furniture design. He was a furniture designer, theorist and teacher, when he in 1942 became an assistant professor at the Art Academy and started a whole new line of furniture design. His students spoke names such as Børge Mogensen, Hans J. Wegner and other famous designers. Kaare Klint completed the construction of Grundtvig s Church in Emdrup (Copenhagen/Denmark) after his father Jensen-Klint. In addition, he designed the Church Chair in 1936, which today remains one of Danish furniture designs big icons. Although the chair is simple to look at it has a complex structure. Like all Klint furniture it is adapted to the human anatomy. ❼ Rainer Bachschmid, 1962 Rainer Bachschmid is a German designer and was originally trained as a carpenter. Rainer has a unique craftsmanship approach to design, and his designs are characterized by a great passion for furniture of solid wood and raw, organic materials. Today, Rainer resides in Switzerland, and with the whole world as inspiration, he creates beautiful, functional and creative solutions for dk3 and a variety of other international names. ❽ Børge Mogensen, 1914-1972 Børge Mogensen was born in Aalborg, Denmark and was a trained cabinet maker and architect. He obtained as a designer, along with colleagues such as Arne Jacobsen and Hans J. Wegner, to get Danish furniture design up on an international and highly respected level. Børge Mogensen s simple and functional designs created a natural connection between his design and its users, which was essential and evident in all his works. In 1972 he was awarded with the title Honorary Royal Designer for Industry in London. Børge Mogensen was productive as few. The ideas came to him at all times of the day and they were enshrined on matchboxes, napkins, half curled envelopes, or whatever was at hand. Thus he created some of the 1950s and 1960s most recognized furniture classics, including the Shaker table, which is known worldwide and is a role-model for many subsequent tables. ❽ ❹

dk3 wood One of infinitely many details that you do not see... The Southern German oak which dk3 uses is approximately 140 years old when felled. Because of the reddish soil and height of the area (approximately 600 meters above sea level) a very light oak is achieved. After cutting in the sawmill the wood is put on sticks, a net is placed over it and it is set to dry for approx. 12 months facing north, so that air can circulate and the tree matures throughout. Finally the wood is oven dried for another 8 weeks, after which the wood has a moisture content of approx. 6.5% and is ready to be made into dk3 furniture. ❶ Oak soap ❷ Oak oil ❸ Oak white oil ❹ Walnut oil ❺ Oak smoked ❻ Wild oak soap ❼ Wild oak oil ❽ Wild oak white oil ➒ Oak grey oil (not available for all tables.
