What are we really talking about? BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE
Business Intelligence Definition BI is the set of techniques and tools for the transformation of raw data into meaningful and useful information for business analysis purposes to improve and optimize decisions and performance. What is Business Intelligence
Business Intelligence A strategy of combining data from various sources to get a set of facts that provides a picture of the business at a certain point in time. BI is based on the information stored by the company itself, which can be presented in multiple formats (text files, excel files, databases, ERPs, etc.) and from multiple applications. All this information should be treated and filtered in order to optimize its analytical processing. This process is called ETL.
Business Intelligence ETL Extract is the process of reading data from outside sources. Transform is the process of converting the extracted data from its previous form (using rules, combining data, etc.) into the form it needs to be in. Load is the process of writing the data into the end target, normally a database called Data Warehouse. These three functions are used in conjunction to pull data out of multiple sources and place it into another database. What is an ETL Tool?
Business Intelligence DATA WAREHOUSE A corporate database that is characterized by integrated and debugged information in one or more different sources which will be analysed from multiple perspectives and with high response rates. The creation of a data warehouse is, in most cases, the first step (from a technical point of view) to implement a complete and reliable business intelligence solution
Business Intelligence Benefits of a Data Warehouse It provides a tool for decision making in any functional area, based on integrated and global information of the business. It makes it easier to use statistical analysis and modelling techniques to find hidden relationships between data, granting this way an added value to the business information. It provides the ability to learn from past data and to predict future situations in different scenarios. It simplifies the implementation of integrated management systems.
Business Intelligence Characteristics of a Data Warehouse Integrated The data stored in the data warehouse should be integrated in a consistent structure in order to eliminate the existing inconsistencies between the various operational systems. Often the information can be structured in different levels of detail to suit different user needs. Subject oriented Only the data required for the business knowledge generation process will be integrated from the operational environment. The data is organized by themes for an easy access and understanding by end users.
Business Intelligence Characteristics of a Data Warehouse Time variant (time series) Time is an implicit part of the information contained in a data warehouse. Data always reflect the present state of business activity in the operational systems. In contrast, the information stored in the data warehouse is processed, among other uses, for trend analysis. Therefore, the data warehouse is loaded with different values of a variable along the time to allow comparisons. Nonvolatile The information of a Data warehouse is permanent, that is, it can be read but not modified. The data warehouse can only be updated by incorporating the latest values taking the variables contained therein, without any kind of action over the previously stored data.
