INSTRUCTIONS GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Applicants submit: 1. The Application for Graduate Admission. Applying online at depaul.edu/apply will expedite the application process, but this paper application may be submitted instead. 2. A non-refundable application fee of $40. 3. One official transcript from each college or university attended. Applicants must have a bachelor s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Students in the process of finishing the bachelor s degree may be conditionally admitted pending receipt of the final transcript showing that the degree was completed. 4. Statement of purpose (750 words) or four essay questions (depending on program) 5. Writing sample 6. Letters of recommendation 7. GRE scores (only required for admission to the public relations and advertising graduate program) DEADLINE DATES To determine the application deadline and available entry terms for your program, refer to the program website or contact The Office of Graduate Admission before applying. International students should submit the application and all supporting documents at least four weeks prior to the application deadlines specified on the program website. DECISIONS If any credentials are missing after an application is received, the applicant will be informed by e-mail. Applicants also may check the status of their application through Campus Connection, DePaul s online student portal. Login information for Campus Connection is sent to applicants by e-mail once the application has been submitted. Only complete applications will be sent to the program for review. The final admission decision rests with the associate dean for graduate programs. 8. Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores, if required The applicant s name should be on all documents. Please refer to the program website for specific requirements and deadlines. A copy of DePaul University s Annual Report is available upon request. The report includes statistics about crimes that occurred on campus and public property immediately adjacent to campus. SUPPORTING MATERIALS APPLICATION FEE A nonrefundable application fee of $40 must accompany the application. The fee may be paid by credit card as part of the online application or by check or money order. The check or money order should include the applicant s name. Make checks payable to DePaul University. According to current university policy, any check returned to the university for nonpayment will be subject to an additional service fee. TRANSCRIPTS Applicants should submit one official transcript from each college or university attended including any study undertaken outside the United States. Each transcript must record all courses taken, grades received and degrees earned. An official transcript bears the original signature of the registrar and/or the original seal of the issuing institution. Photocopies and facsimiles are unofficial. Most universities and colleges have a policy whereby official transcripts may be given to students in a sealed and signed envelope. Applicants who have such a service available to them may send transcripts prepared in this manner to The Office of Graduate Admission. If official electronic transcripts are available, they may be submitted to graddepaul@depaul.edu. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE/ESSAY QUESTION All programs require a statement (750 words) or answered essay questions (four) explaining the applicant s academic goals, career plans and reasons for selecting the graduate program. Please note that some programs require additional or specific information. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Confidential letters of recommendation should be written by persons who are able to evaluate the applicant s capability to succeed academically at the graduate level. Please notify recommenders that the letter should include the applicant s full name and the name of the program to which the applicant is applying. Some programs provide a form that should accompany the letter. Recommendations can be given to the applicant in a sealed envelope or sent directly to The Office of Graduate Admission. Letters of recommendation may also be submitted by e-mail as a PDF attachment. The PDF letter must be on official letterhead and sent directly from the recommender to graddepaul@depaul.edu. GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION (required for the public relations and advertising program) DePaul s code number for reporting Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores is 1165. Applicants should take the GRE early to meet the application deadline. For information regarding the GRE, visit ets.org or phone (800) GRE-CALL (800-473-2255). Only scores submitted by Educational Testing Service (ETS) are official.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION Some programs offer graduate assistantships or tuition waiver awards to outstanding candidates on a competitive basis. Deadlines and requirements vary. Please check the program website for more information. INSTRUCTIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS Payment of Application Fee International applicants should pay the nonrefundable application fee online with a credit card or use an International Postal Money Order or a draft on a U.S. bank. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) coupons are not acceptable. Payment cannot be waived or deferred. Applications received without a fee will not be processed. International Educational Credentials International applicants must supply official academic records from all post-secondary colleges and universities attended, including yearly transcripts, mark sheets, exam results, final diplomas, degrees or graduation certificates. Official copies are issued in the original language directly by your college or university. Copies must bear the official stamp and/or seal of the institution, as well as the signature of the appropriate official, such as the dean, rector, registrar, controller of examinations or Office of Teaching Affairs. Official translations must be submitted for all educational documents originally issued in a language other than English. For details on academic credentials required from a specific country, visit depaul.edu/international. Test of English as a Foreign Language DePaul s code number for reporting Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores is 1165. All applicants educated outside the United States must submit proof of English proficiency. The university requires a minimum TOEFL score of 80 on the TOEFL ibt, 213 on the computer-based test or 550 on the paper-based test. While applicants who meet the university minimum will be reviewed, most graduate programs prefer TOEFL scores of at least 96 on the TOEFL ibt, 243 on the computer-based test or 590 on the paperbased test. Please visit toefl.org for more information. Please note that TOEFL cannot be waived for any applicant educated in a country where the native language is not officially recognized as English. Waivers will not be granted to international applicants/non-native speakers on the basis of the following: education at a non-u.s. school where English was the language of instruction, U.S. employment or U.S. residency alone, completion of an ESL program alone. Financial Documentation Students who plan to apply for F-1 or J-1 student visa status are required by U.S. immigration law to submit evidence of adequate funding to meet the estimated tuition and living expenses for their first year of study before the I-20 or DS- 2019 form can be issued. Applicants must submit a financial affidavit of support form along with a current, dated and original bank statement verifying the availability of funds for the required amount. Documents must be written in English or accompanied by an official translation and must have been issued within the past six months. Promissory notes or employers statement of estimated earnings will not be accepted. Any false statements made regarding financial responsibility violate U.S. immigration laws. DePaul is not responsible if the amount of funds shown as available by the student or sponsor on the affidavit of support becomes unavailable after the date on this affidavit. Passport Copy All students requiring an I-20 or DS-2019 from DePaul must submit a copy of the identification page of their passport with their financial documents. Transferring Your I-20 Form If you currently have F-1 visa status and attend another school, college, university or English-language program in the U.S. and are admitted to DePaul, you must receive a new DePaul I-20 form. Please submit the financial documents and copy of your passport as outlined above, along with a copy of your current I-20 form, I-94 card and the completed Transfer Release Form. Evidence of Immigration Status If you are on a type of visa other than F-1 or J-1, and are interested in a change of status (i.e. request an I-20 form), please submit a copy of the current visa page and I-94 card in your passport as verification of your current status. The documents outlined above are not required for admission, but are necessary for the issuance of an I-20 form.
