Course Descriptions 4 Affordable Care Act Session #10 Instructor: Larry Gray, CPA Level: Update IRS Program #2QHXS-U-00638-15-I The Affordable Care Act has many complex issues and, in this session, we ll review how it affects both business and individuals. This session provides you with critical knowledge necessary to work with your taxpayers on how the Affordable Care Act affects them and covers any new developments. Alternative Minimum Tax Session #11 Instructor: Melinda Garvin, EA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00639-15-I Many tax professionals struggle with AMT. Terminology, including preference items and adjustment items and acronyms like TMT and AMTI can be confusing. This session reviews common terms and acronyms associated with AMT and covers the ins and outs of AMT to help clarify this misunderstood topic. C Corporation Tax Issues Session #12 Instructor: Steven F. O Rourke, EA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00640-15-I Just like any other business entity, a C corporation has unique tax aspects and there are advantages and disadvantages of operating as a C corporation. In this session, we ll cover topics unique to C corporations. You ll want to attend if you have any C corporation clients! COD and Insolvency Session #13 Instructor: Jaye Tritz, EA, CFP Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00641-15-I Generally when taxpayers are in fi - nancial distress, their property is foreclosed upon and any debt associated with that property could be cancelled. If the debt is cancelled, taxpayers have taxable income to report unless they meet one of the exceptions. One exception for excluding debt is insolvency. The calculation used to determine if a taxpayer is insolvent can be complex and cumbersome. This session examines the calculation of insolvency and the reduction of tax attributes associated with excluding cancelled debt due to insolvency. Current Developments Individual and Business Session #14 Instructor: Steven F. O Rourke, EA Level: Update IRS Program #2QHXS-U-00642-15-I New tax legislation is continuously enacted into law. This dynamic session covers new tax legislation, recent developments and expiring provisions that affect individuals and small business. Depreciation Session #15 Instructor: Randy Lawshé, EA, MBA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00643-15-I Many, if not all, businesses purchase assets that are used in their trade or business. The cost of these assets is recovered through depreciation, an annual allowance for the wear and tear, deterioration or obsolescence of the asset. This session helps you understand the general tax depreciation rules and how to apply those rules to your clients. Exempt Organizations Session #16 Instructor: Kathryn M. Keane, EA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00644-15-I Due to the intense scrutiny from both the IRS and the public at large, taxexempt organizations are seeking advice from tax professionals on many fronts. In this session, we ll cover a wide variety of aspects involved with advising tax-exempt organizations. If you might need to advise tax-exempt organizations, you ll want to make sure to attend this session!

Course Descriptions Filing Status and Dependency Issues Session #17 Instructor: Steven F. O Rourke, EA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00645-15-I Determining the proper fi ling status and who is an eligible dependent is not always an easy task. In this session, we ll revisit the basics of fi ling status and the considerations that must be taken into account when determining eligible dependents. Attend this session to master these concepts, which impact virtually every return you prepare. Foreign Investment Reporting Session #18 Instructor: Melinda Garvin, EA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00646-15-I The IRS is making a very proactive attempt to uncover hidden offshore accounts requiring taxpayers to fi le certain disclosure forms with the tax return when foreign holdings exceed a specifi ed value. The penalties for noncompliance can be substantial. In this session, we ll cover issues associated with foreign investments, including the foreign tax credit and when taxpayers are required to disclose foreign assets. HSAs and HRAs Session #19 Instructor: Kathryn M. Keane, EA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00647-15-I As health insurance costs rise, individuals are choosing to accept health plans with higher deductibles to control costs. Taxpayers who have qualifying high deductible plans may make contributions to health savings accounts (HSAs) pre-tax, which can be a considerable tax advantage for those who qualify. Health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs) are provided by employers to reimburse employees for out-of-pocket medical expenses tax-free and can impact employees eligibility to contribute to an HSA. The implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has drastically changed the way HRAs can be offered. Attend this session to gain a better understanding of HSAs and HRAs. Introduction to Audits Session #20 Instructor: Randy Lawshé, EA, MBA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00648-15-I At some point, almost every tax professional will have a client who is audited. As technology evolves, the IRS constantly alters how, where and when the audit is performed. IRS agents can be intimidating, aggressive and, at times, unprofessional when dealing with taxpayers and tax professionals. Whether the taxpayer receives a simple CP-2000 notice or is involved in a face-to-face interview with a revenue agent, this session is designed to prepare you for the moment when the client needs you most during an audit. Investments Session #21 Instructor: Jaye Tritz, EA, CFP Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00649-15-I Reporting the sale of stock seems relatively straightforward. However, there are many other types of investments that can complicate reporting. Taxpayers can purchase stock options, such as puts and calls, to hedge their current investment position or can receive stock options as compensation. Attend this session to gain an understanding of the various types of investments that can complicate investment reporting. IRS Hot Topics Session #22 Instructor: Larry Gray, CPA Level: Update IRS Program #2QHXS-U-00650-15-I Each year the IRS publishes the Dirty Dozen list of tax scams and has various initiatives to make sure tax preparers are complying with tax law. 6

As a tax professional, it is imperative that you stay ahead of the game. In this session, we ll cover hot topics that are scrutinized by the IRS. Is Your Office Circular 230 Compliant? Session #23 Instructor: Melinda Garvin, EA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-E-00651-15-I What is your understanding of the term best practices? This term is used in Circular 230, but do you know what it means to the IRS? Too many practitioners are unaware that a failure to comply with best practices rules almost always indicates a failure to comply with other provisions of Circular 230. This session covers administration, facilities, personnel, computer systems, media, safeguarding of taxpayer data and ensuring your compliance with the IRS. Real World Ethics: EIC Due Diligence Session #24 Instructor: Kathryn M. Keane, EA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-E-00652-15-I Earned Income Credit (EIC) audits are on the rise and preparer penalties for EIC noncompliance are at an all-time high. Don t be scared, be prepared! This session reviews the rules tax return preparers must follow for EIC, including ethical dilemmas they may encounter. Asking questions or obtaining a taxpayer signature may not protect you or your client from being hit with penalties for failing to comply with the rules. Representation Issues Session #25 Instructor: Larry Gray, CPA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00653-15-I Representing taxpayers who have IRS problems is a challenge. The IRS has little sympathy for delinquent individuals and businesses. Fortunately, taxpayers have rights and, through their legal representative, they can successfully negotiate a resolution that allows them to move on with their lives. To effectively represent their clients, tax practitioners must know the law, the rules and IRS policy. Sale of Business Assets Form 4797 Session #26 Instructor: Randy Lawshé, EA, MBA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00654-15-I When selling a business asset, it s essential to properly calculate the different tax ramifi cations of recapture, nonrecapture and unrecaptured gain. In this session, learn the calculation methodology of Form 4797 and tips and tricks for verifying proper calculations. Schedule C Tax Issues Session #27 Instructor: Randy Lawshé, EA, MBA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00655-15-I A sole proprietorship is the most basic form of a business. Nonetheless, complexities with a sole proprietorship can exist just as with any form of business. Many sole proprietors mistakenly believe Schedule C is the only form used to report all the income and expenses associated with the business. This session examines various complications that can occur with a sole proprietorship. This session is perfect for any tax professionals who work with small businesses. Schedule E Session #28 Instructor: Kathryn M. Keane, EA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00656-15-I Rental real estate is one of the most common income-producing activities for taxpayers. Nonetheless, complexities can exist. In this session, we ll cover the Schedule E, including vacation rentals, depreciation, passive activities and suspended losses. 7

Course Descriptions Schedules K-1 and Basis Session #29 Instructor: Melinda Garvin, EA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00657-15-I Basis in fl ow-through entities is very often a misunderstood topic due to its overwhelming nature. The answer to the question, Who is supposed to keep track of the basis of a passthrough entity? has multiple answers the owner, the tax professional or the software. What s the right answer? Technically, the owners of the passthrough entities are to keep track of basis, but they do not know the tax laws behind tracking basis. The best answer to this question is the tax preparer who prepares the owner s individual income tax return, Form 1040. Attend this session to learn how to track S corporation shareholder and partner basis effi ciently. Tax Benefits for Education Session #30 Instructor: Jaye Tritz, EA, CFP Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00658-15-I All parents of college-age children understand the rising cost of higher education. Education credits help offset the cost of higher education by reducing the tax liability of eligible taxpayers. This session gives tax professionals the tools they need to properly advise taxpayers about which benefi ts are available and more advantageous for them. Tax Considerations for Wealthy Taxpayers Session #31 Instructor: Larry Gray, CPA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00659-15-I As a taxpayer s income increases, certain tax benefi ts are reduced or completely eliminated. Further, higher income taxpayers can be subject to additional taxes. In this session, we ll focus on tax issues that are common to wealthy taxpayers. Tax Issues of Divorce Session #32 Instructor: Steven F. O Rourke, EA Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00660-15-I Divorce can be an emotional rollercoaster for the parties involved. Understanding the complications and economic effect at the tax level will reassure the taxpayers that their return(s) have been properly prepared. As a tax professional, it s your responsibility to explain the tax implications of divorce and report income and expense correctly on the individuals return(s). When children are involved, it can be tricky to determine which taxpayer is allowed to claim an exemption for a child. Knowing how to distinguish between child support and other payments is important. Being prepared when clients come to you in the midst of divorce can alleviate some tax fi ling problems. Trusts Session #33 Instructor: Jaye Tritz, EA, CFP Level: IRS Program #2QHXS-T-00661-15-I Trusts are used for a variety of different tax and estate planning purposes. While tax professionals cannot directly establish trusts for their clients, they are an integral part of the team serving the client and must have a basic understanding of trusts in order to best serve their clients. In this session, we ll focus on the basics of trusts. 8

Instructors Jaye Tritz, EA, CFP Kathryn M. Keane, EA Larry Gray, CPA Melinda Garvin, EA Randy Lawshé, EA, MBA Steven F. O Rourke, EA Explanation of Levels We acknowledge that tax professionals vary greatly in their experience and in the type of tax returns they prepare. To help you decide which sessions are right for you, refer to the following guidelines: Update An update level gives a general review of new developments.
