PROGRAM & CAREER INFORMATION Career Description As an Occupational Safety and Health Specialist (OSHS), you will inspect places of employment for unsafe equipment and working conditions. As a specialist, you will follow up on employee complaints of unsafe work practices. This career requires you to spend a great deal of time in the field, inspecting and enforcing a wide range of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. You will also be required to research, develop, and implement programs to correct safety and health problems and concerns. As an OSHS, you will assist employers in complying with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) regulations and standards. In the event of a violation, unsafe practices are recorded and brought to the attention of the employer. You will need specific written and verbal skills to market and teach safety programs to all employees. You can find employment with all levels of government agencies, as well as with public and private businesses. How to Get Started GateWay Community College is the only school in the state of Arizona to offer an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Occupational Safety and Health Technology. We also offer a Certificate of Completion. Both of our programs provide the classroom and applied experience needed to become an OSHS. Employment Outlook In Arizona, Occupational Safety and Health Technicians positions are expected to increase by 2018. Occupational Safety and Health Technicians earn an average hourly rate of $0.2 for an average annual salary of $6,064. Program Costs Tuition and fees are set by the Maricopa Community College District Governing Board. Tuition is based on the 2014-2015 tuition rate of $84 per credit hour (for in-county students). Tuition and fees are subject to change. Additional fees may apply. Financial Aid and Child Care are available to those who qualify.
