This program, offered jointly by the Graduate School and the College of Continuing Education, responds to the academic needs of motivated adults who want a coherent graduate degree that is not confined to a single discipline or specialty. Each student, in consultation with an academic advisor, designs an individual program of study around an interdisciplinary theme or topic. The curriculum includes discussion-oriented liberal studies seminars, electives drawn from other departments of the University and a culminating final project. The atmosphere is collegial; students get to know each other and their professors. Nearly all MLS students are studying part-time, and they come from a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds. TIMELY AND TIMELESS INTERDISCIPLINARY EDUCATION FOR ADULT STUDENTS IS THE MLS FOR YOU? Adult and part-time students those who work and need a flexible program with scheduling choices. Liberal arts graduates who want to continue studies that lead to an advanced degree but without the predetermined curriculum that more structured majors and minors provide. People in specialized professions teachers, engineers, technical experts, health professionals who want to broaden and deepen their understanding of their society in almost any area that interests them. Students who want to bring together perspectives traditionally divided by disciplinary boundaries, to develop interests that require multiple points of view (e.g., the humanities and health care; business and philosophy; artistic expression and politics). Working people for whom a master s degree is an important career credential, one that may offer opportunities for career advancement, promotion, and scheduled salary improvements. PROGRAM FEATURES AND REQUIREMENTS Under the semester system, 30-semester credits will be required. Curriculum requirements include nine credits of Liberal Studies seminars (LS 5100), 15 credits of elective courses, an introductory seminar (LS 8001), and final project course (LS 8002). The MLS program faculty committee and faculty director review and approve required courses, recruit and evaluate faculty, and assure the quality of the program in all respects. Liberal Studies courses are offered evenings and Saturday mornings. Students for whom it is convenient may take elective courses during the day. Students may register via the web, by mail or fax to the registrar s office. Priority is given to students admitted to the program. Financial aid programs are available to part-time students (subject to individual eligibility). ADMISSIONS INFORMATION Completed applications are due by: March 1 for Summer and Fall Admission or September 1 for Spring Admission Although the MLS is designed for working adults, there are no specific vocational implications related to admission or program requirements. The student must have earned bachelor s degree from an accredited institution. Admission is based on academic record and other indicators of the student s ability to succeed in graduate study.
MASTER OF LIBERAL STUDIES (MLS) The Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) at the University of Minnesota is a master s degree for persons with a lively intellectual curiosity and wide-ranging professional and educational backgrounds. It is interdisciplinary in scope and intent, with a schedule built to serve the part time evening student. ADMISSION TO THE MLS PROGRAM What the faculty will look for when considering your application The final decision about your admission will be made by the Graduate School, but it is heavily influenced by the recommendation of the MLS faculty admissions committee. Each application receives a comprehensive review. That means that your application for admission will be viewed holistically, taking many things into account. The committee asks such questions as: Are you likely to succeed academically in the Graduate School? Is there a good fit between the MLS program and your stated educational objectives? Can you express yourself well in writing? What are the positive qualities (leadership for example) and experiences that you will bring into the program? Previous academic work. As a general rule, prior academic success is the single best predictor of academic success in Graduate School; therefore, transcripts showing previous college work are carefully reviewed as part of the admissions process. The committee will not base its assessment solely on your cumulative GPA but rather on the entire transcript. Improvement over time, grades received in advanced courses, types of courses taken, and recent graduate-level work are all factored into the assessment. The Graduate School s preferred performance level is a minimum 3.00 (B average) cumulative GPA, but a lower GPA can be assuaged by evidence of maturity and motivation. If your GPA is below 3.00 you need to submit a brief, written explanation. Statement of Purpose. The Statement of Purpose is a short essay about you and your academic interests. Briefly tell us about yourself and what you would contribute to the MLS community. Describe your personal and/or professional goals and why you think a self-designed, interdisciplinary program like the MLS will help you achieve them. Explain how you would focus your program of study, noting the particular issues and questions you would like to explore. Be as specific as you can. What academic disciplines would you expect to draw upon? Cite 3-4 elective courses from at least two disciplines that you might include in your program. Also cite 2-3 actual Liberal Studies topics seminars that you might want to take. Make it 3-4 pages long (double spaced). You are encouraged to send or e-mail a draft of your Statement of Purpose to the MLS office before submitting your final application. The MLS staff will be happy to offer feedback about how to create a strong statement.
Writing skill. Are you a proficient writer? The MLS is a writing intensive program. Students who lack mature, graduate-level writing skills will be handicapped in this program. The faculty committee will assess your writing ability based on your Statement of Purpose and other writing samples that you submit. The Statement of Purpose needs to represent your very best writing. It should not only convey information about you and your plans, it must be well organized, succinct, persuasive, and exhibit clarity of thought and expression. We would also like to see other examples of what you consider to be your best writing, totaling about 10-15 pages. These writing samples can be on any topic in any style or genre so long as it is prose. If possible, include academic writing that demonstrates critical thinking and analysis. Do not send poetry, bulleted outlines, or scripts. If you send writing that is co-authored, please indicate the portion(s) authored by you. Avoid business or technical reports laden with jargon. Recommendations. We ask for at least two recommendations. Recommendations can augment your application by allowing others to attest to your qualifications, experiences, and characteristics. When taken into account with other information, recommendations shed more light on what you might bring to the MLS program and whether an interdisciplinary program like this is right for you. They can be from employers, teachers, clergy, friends, or colleagues people who know you well and who can tell us why you would be a good candidate for Graduate School. A professor s recommendation is desirable, but not required. Optional materials: Résumé or Curriculum Vitae: You may include a résumé or CV if you feel these would be relevant to our faculty s assessment of your goals and potential for success in the MLS Program GRE Scores: Although the GRE is not required, if you have taken the exam you may report your score. Explanation of extenuating circumstances: If your undergraduate g.p.a. falls below 3.0, you should include a separate explanation of your previous performance and an indication of how your present situation has changed to indicate future success. FINANCIAL AID OPTIONS The major sources of financial aid for MLS students are employer tuition benefits, work-study or graduate assistantships, and loans. FINANCIAL AID OPTIONS EDUCATION TAX BENEFITS The Lifetime Learning Tax Credit applies to any level of enrollment, is tied to modified federal adjusted gross income, and applies to out-of-pocket tuition and course fees or taxable employer tuition benefits. The maximum tax credit is $2,000 per taxpayer per year spread over any number of years. An above-the-line education tax deduction of up to $4,000 per tax year for tuition and course fees may be available for students with incomes to high to receive significant benefit from the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit. Other requirements are similar to the Lifetime Credit. A tax deduction of up to $4,000 per tax year is available for interest on qualified educational loans. Up to $5,250 of employer tuition benefits is tax free for graduate course work.
