H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 1 Online Student Satisfaction Survey Winter 2012 Total Respondents 243 1. Why did you choose to take an online class? The support and training was sufficient for your online classes? Yes No Unanswered 85% 14% 1% Yes No Unanswered 4. Did you have any computer difficulties when taking a test? 24% 72% 4% 5. What would have liked to have known, before you began your online class? That each class was set up differently. Although didn't take long to get used to A list of assignments due in the syllabus, so I could schedule my homework around my other classes instead of trying to squeeze in work the week it is due. I thought that the instructions given for all of the classes was very good.no

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 2 The HIIM 171 class was geared more towards intermediate to me than entry level into coding. I Was not pleased with how fast the course pace went. Nothing; I figured it out pretty well on the way. Every due date for every assignment. There was actually a lot more writing that I anticipated. I really did like how flexible the schedule was This is not the first time for me to take online classes. Nothing, I have taken online classes before and knew the process. Work Loads I've taken an online class before this, and I didn't know that there would be such heavy correspondence in the forum required. While I understand this, it was a shock the first time. I suppose I would have liked to have known that, but I was more prepared for my second online class. I guess I didn't realize how much of it is your responsibility, how you have to really make sure that you are keeping up with the required material. More of the work involved and the due date timing. HOW TO USE COMPUTER Not that I can think of. whatever What the teacher true agenda was for the class content. What she taught did not match the description. How to use the Black Board. n/a I would have liked to have known how to use a scanner before I began my online class. I had never used a scanner before the online class, and had to get help from one of my siblings in order to understand how to work it. (I used the scanner for scanning worksheets and online labs that I couldn't do online and had to handwrite to complete.) The respondus lockdown browser required for taking tests for one of my courses runs incredibly slow on my computer making the allotted hour given to complete the test almost impossible. Also, public library computers don't provide it, so I HAD to buy a new pc when mine crashed mid-quarter.

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 3 It was all good I would have liked to known what a convoluted, monstrous, pain in the ass Blackboard is. Finding things is NOT easy. I can't even find a quick link to email my instructor for the course. Is this a teacher review too?- because if so, I have some bones to pick. The online course was incredibly frustrating. Carla Hogan DID have everything clearly outlined in the syllabus as far as what was due and when, but the Tegrity classes were not well prepared and when you're trying to teach a difficult and abstract thing like accounting, clarity and explanations are everything. She seemed to stumble through MANY of the lectures, backtrack, and correct mistakes along the way. There should not have been any mistakes and it reeks of laziness to keep reusing the same half-ass class materials quarter after quarter and not even change the dates to coincide with the current quarter. In addition to this, I feel like I should have asked for extra credit in exchange for editing all of her lecture notes that were posted. I know that sounds egotistical and overly critical, but there were consistent grammatical and spelling errors which were distracting, confusing, and caused me to have to read the material multiple times to figure out what it SHOULD have said in addition to learning the concept being explained. When I did have questions about material or was experiencing problems using the files she posted for class assignments, it took a day or more to get a response, which did NOT fix the problem and forced me to reply with another email, to which I did not get a response for at least another 24 hours (and on and on and on). The problem was never resolved and I gave up out of complete and utter frustration. I work full time and my days that are dedicated to school work are limited. Carla arranged the class as though we were all passionate and pursuing careers in accounting when in reality, this is a BASIC course, and the only one of its like that most of us will ever take. There is really very little that I needed to know once I had read the course documents and done the Blackboard tutorial. I find that the discussion boards are clunky to manage and that it can be tricky trying to read things in order. That said the computer issues were minor glitches with the tseting browser (REspondus Lockdown) and were handled so that no on e lost a test score or opportunity to take an exam because of the computer error. The instructors here have been very good at handling communication. The class goals and information have been clear and questions about said answered propmtly and clearly. I am continuing to have a great experience with my online schooling. Nothing Nothing, this is my second quarter online and I love it! l I would have liked to know more about how to manage my time. Syllabus' available during the registration process would be ideal so we could balance the required workload or atleast know the expectations and grading scale.

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 4 The procedure of doing the online class and the submission of assignments. I have taken many online classes, so there wasn't anything that surprised me this quarter. However, I have noticed that the availability of information provided before taking online classes has progressed substantially over the past couple of years, and is probably quite helpful to those new to the system. the difficulties of online classes. not being able to talk to the teacher face to face to explain your problem. and what was included in online class! Nothing. The orientation for blackboard is there if you need it. It runs very smoothly and is pretty self sufficient, not a lot of explanation is necessary. Nothing, I have taken online courses before and have had little to no problems. Everything was great. I am continuing to have a great experience with my online schooling no comment more information about how the layout of the discussion boards work and how to reply, the purpose of adding a thread, etc. That the class was primarily discussion based. More direct information on how the various functions of the Blackboard work (meaning not having to go search for it), more friendly help topics - like setting browser settings to view things without getting "page not found" errors. The Blackboard seems antiquated and out of date compared to other online colleges that I have attended. This program should have step by step walk throughs of all its functions, not a video and a help section. Should be "stupid proof" in my opionion Nothing. It was kind of a learn-as-you-go process. Nothing. Ive taken an online class before in the past Whether the online class is fully online, or some meet up at the college is required or not nothing i think that the online classes were great I think it's always nice to get e-mails sent out a few days before class in preparation for the quarter starting so you know what to expect. The syllabus/workload

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 5 It would be helpful to know the Professor's schedule for tests and larger assignments. I took online classes before so I was aware of what to expect. I'd like to read the syllabus first, and also how the class is flexible (don't understand the concept of matching to the face-to-face class) Nothing Nothing I would have liked to have known the required schedule ahead of time. I did take the orientation that was really valuable. It took a while for me to understand all the side bars that the teachers use and they all use each category for different purposes. The amount of time time given for the final was not sufficient :( Nothing I would have liked to have known what resources I would require for the class, and how assignments were organized. In one of my classes I ended up having to go to three different websites in order to complete the homework for my class, and the directions for a single, common assignment could take pages That the only learning I am getting is from myself out of a text book. Nothing that wasn't already told to me. The Blackboard introduction was absolutely fabulous. I would have liked to have known how easy it was going to be for me to slack off. I have taken some online classes before, so I knew what to expect. There really isn't anything I would have liked to have known before starting this class. nothing the only thing I can comment on is the upgrade to "elluminate" as the new version is more difficult to use... n/a I have been taking classes on blackoard since I was in high school. It is nothing new.

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 6 However, I would have liked to have an instructor that kept up with the grading, I sympathize with the fact that he has a lot going on in his life, but don't make the time committment if you cannot do your job. Im a student and I work full time. I would not get a break if i were ot be late to work, or if i were to have turned in all of my assignemnts in at the very end of the quarter. Im dissappionted with the lack of accountability with the grading, this is the second term in a row this has happened. I was satisfied with everything else. Everything was explained well in advance. There is noting specific that I would recommend. I felt fairly well prepared. The correct image of the required textbook cover on the "Cengage" website How unorganized a class could be. I wish I would've known that Blackboard was so poorly designed. I would not have wasted my money and time on the class Number of classmates. Whether or not the professor was intending to participate in the discussions. none The exam dates Sometimes getting Blackboard to connect was difficult. I found it more so in the Powerpoint class. I would like to have known the amount of reading and written assignments that were required to pass the class. There was nothing I didn't know that I hadn't already read about. You guys give students a lot of good information to start online classes. Plus, all the classes i've taken at shoreline have been hybrid classes, and so that helps a lot too because I took those classes before my first online class. nothing This class was pretty straight forward. I wasn't lacking any information before beginning it. I had a teacher tell her class not to save your answers on the test as you go through...huge mistake. I checked my answers after my test was graded and somehow maybe through scrolling the answers were changed. I had to accept the bad grade I was given, even though she was the one who told us not to. I think I received a B instead of an A, but it was still disappointing, and something I felt she should have been aware of. nothing

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 7 I feel that I was prepared to take online class from information provided before class began. I enjoyed taking the eprocurement course Jerry is always very responsive and willing to help his students he is a great asset to your teaching staff. On the other hand this is my fifth quarter taking courses at Shoreline and I can say that Judy Yu for the Intro to Business is somewhat responsive she will barely respond to emails and her online class seemed to have alot of issues with working properly. Submitting assignments doesn't work half the time and if you need her help she takes at least two to three emails to respond or you never even hear back. Kind of hard to rate a sub par teacher sorry but that is just my opinion. I was able to take two classes online successfully from Bangkok, Thailand. I am very pleased with the system, services, and education I received. Thanks! Everything was all online a better way of how to keep track of assignments and figuring out whats due; and the discussion boards. I really enjoyed our instructors choices in reading material and thought that the class was great. I wish I had more time to really get into it even more but with my other classes it was a great match. I see myself taking his class again for just my personal interest. I have been taking classes online for a while. I really can't think of anything to add. I thought everything was very clear and easy to understand even though this was my first time taking an online class at this college. The only thing I had some difficulty with was finding the deadline dates for assignments, which got me a little confused at one time, but otherwise everything was great. Was pretty well informed ahead of time. I would have liked to have known that all work would be due at 5pm instead of the usual 1159 pm. This made it extremely difficult to meet deadlines because I, like many others that take online classes work until 5 pm and need the evening hours to do the assigned work. I found it pointless to take this online class because of how hard it was to manage my time simply because the work was due at 5pm. My grades have suffered because of this. The internet shut down during one of my math Quizes. The syllabus of the classes

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 8 Who my professor was (either via a phone conversation, or some kind of contact. Never had a phone conversation with my professor the whole course..), what the required materials were (none were listed until the class started, and that was through her syllabus). I thought that taking an online class is a good idea. I love it! n/a To expect that some students would be distracted and not focused on schoolwork in the campus computer labs. To know which computer labs were quieter nothing, I was pretty comfortable would the online process, just getting used to the amount of work was the only thing I had and am still getting used to. nothing This is not my first online class, I have been pretty familiar with Bb. I cannot think of anything that I would of wanted to know in the beginning of the course. Just to be more familiarized with the way blackboard works I have taken online classes a couple of quarters by now so I am used to this method. sometimes can be frustrating because questions take a little bit longer to be answered but my instructor was really good at getting back to me ASAP I have taken classes online quite a bit, so I was pretty prepared. The ci It was compeletly new for me, but the orientation was enough for me to know about the online class. Teacher available for face to face if wehave the question. How hard it would be to keep motivated about reading the material required on the schedule given. How poorly integrated the Elluminate tool would be this quarter as compared to previous quarters. We know that ownership of the product changed but the quality of the product was not as good. nada

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 9 I took an online course because I have a few days that are very full and a few days with large blocks of time to get online and work. I wish I knew before signing up for the Eng 101 course, that we would have to be on the computer at select times and day; Tues, Weds, Thurs and Sunday. The way it is set up, we have to wait until others post something on a discussion board to then reply at least twice. This was not ideal for my schedule and at least one of my classmates whom I believe dropped out for this reason. She and I are both single parents that are trying to juggle a lot. I thought an online course would be perfect for that. Also, we were given an example of a certain format, then expected to know it. The professor strictly graded us on these guidelines from the example, even though it didn't actually teach us. An example can be found in the web for anything; not quite the same as teaching someone something. This turned me off to online classes - although I may give it a chance again. That portions of the tele-networking system, Elluminate, are not compatible with linux. The lack of information related to the topic & more time than one week per chapter as some of the online class needs more instruction to comprehend & actually retain. Also needs to be more directed as to what is going on in the real world..not the college world. This was my first time taking online classes. I went into it in the dark. It would have been nice to have the first couple of days of the quarter in class to make sure we know where to find what we need, to complete our assignments. Some things I guessed at and learned the hard way. I know I could have emailed or met with my intsructor but I kind of got the impression she had a full schedule and I did not want to waster her time. Although, I will have to say that when I did email her and ask her questions she was very prompt in answering. Well... actually nothing... I got many information before I began online class. The quality of the instructor interms of presentation, support and experience The availabiity of 24/7 blackboard support The availability of text Can't really think of anything. The syllabus was pretty clear. Nothing, I have taken online classes at Shoreline before and have enjoyed them all Just how to use blackboard and with the teachers were clearer on what they expected. To type tests on another doc processor so you don't loose answers if locked out!

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 10 I don't think there was anything I would have wanted to know except for what was specific to this class. When I signed up for the class (HIIM171) there appeared to be a limit of 20 students. But when I actually got into the course the instructor lumped all 5 sections of the class into one. There were more than 70 students enrolled and it was a nightmare going through the discussion items (particularly since the instructor mandated 3 discussion items a week). Some weeks there were over 300 discussion items (95% I would estimate to be garbage people wrote just to get credit). It was impossible to sort through legitimate questions and comments. What a waste of time. Another class did the same thing HIIM 125, but thankfully there was no mandate to post to the discussion boards. Still, it was impossible to get any sense of community for the class. Is this even legal? I was used to using blackboard so nothing surprised me, I had take a hybrid class before. That my professor was gonna be flaky and take too much time to grade anything. Also was rude and did not reply back to several emails. I will never take another class with dr. Diana knaff how much of my time it was going to take I am new to online classes and Shoreline blackboard. I was pretty confused on what I needed to look for in finding the homework and where to find the tests for each chapter. Although I had a great instructor to help me guide me through the rough spots and she even looked my number up and called me to explain in detail how to use blackboard better as a student. That online classes regularly contain more of a work load to compensate for being online. System requirements for my computer. My professor was less than helpful with IT related problems. I took several several exams on campus and continued to experience "freezing" of the screen. The response time for her to respond to these issues was delayed, less than respectful, and often shifted blame to my computer even though I utilized campus computer lab hours. I would like to have known that it almost takes more time and dedication to do an online class because there is no teacher pushing you face-to-face to get stuff done, or helping to explain things. It takes more dedication, more reading and meditating to fully understand the topic. I have taken online classes before, so I was prepared. Not all the courses had a definite schedule ahead of time. It's nice when instructors have all the assignments and due dates laid out, or more of a regular schedule.

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 11 Difficulty of the class and average time needed to complete the class. No. I was new to online classes in Spring 2011 and found a lot of support and information regarding how to get started, etc. 6. Are there classes you would like to see online in the future? More music classes, or music business classes More online classes other than electives. English, science, etc n/a yes more criminal justices classes not sure at the moment So far, everything I would like to take has been offered online No more math classes. more options for online math All Yes No I don't know of any classes I would like to have online. none that I have not already seen available as an online class I would like to see maybe a Geology 102 online course, or an online Astronomy course in the future.

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 12 Nothing in particular. Just a lot more options. there is quite array of online classes, with which I am satisfied. :) no I only needed to satisfy two course pre-requisites, and I found them both available online during winter quarter. Very convenient! More of the Criminal Justice classes I would prefer to see more classes offered on campus starting after 4pm, many adult students work during the days and frankly its a bit ridiculous how few classes shoreline offers to their employed student body. I will in fact probably end up switching to a different community college next school year because of shoreline's inability to accommodate me as a working student I plan on taking my whole associates in HIM technology program online whatever I would like to see more than 1 Sociology class online. Astronomy 101. Cooking classes!!!! I realize this would be hard as an online class.. But I wish Shoreline would offer any type of cooking classes. :( No Non that I can think of at this time. don't know yet. I don't know what the options would be for physics classes, but they are never online and I have not seen them on evenings/weekends in the two years I have been attending Shoreline classes. If they can't be taken online (due to lab, understandable) It would be great if they were offered during nontraditional hours at least. not sure at this time. yes Math, English no! foreign language no comment

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 13 a hybrid of organic chemistry would be nice. More classes that aren't a prereq. for nursing but will help, for those of us that are trying to work so we cant get experience while still being able to stay in the medical mind set Music courses not really All of them! PE (work out video format), more choices in basic classes. no, i am happy with the choices No, I won't be taking future online classes from Shoreline. Not that I can think of. No It would be amazing if a whole business degree could be offered online As technology progresses it moves quickly into business life. Technology has pushed some businesses to the point where they are fully operated and managed online I would like to see Shoreline take a leap further into technology by offering a business degree that's fully online. I think there are definitely a lot of classes that could easily become available online such as English classes. I took a hybrid English 101 class that I personally believe could have easily been entirely online. foreign language combined with skype/eluminate class GSW 284 and CMST 203 More Math courses No, I'm pretty sick of the HIIM online program. I think there is not a lot of thought that goes into the student experience to begin with and almost no interest from the instructors (HIIM 171 mostly) to make the experience more user friendly or accessable None in particular. I would rather take coinciding classes on campus or online classes. I can't think of specifics at the moment, but there are some hybrids that would be nice as online classes.

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 14 math, statistics, anatomy/phisiology Clean Energy Technologies classes No. I will never take an online class again, if I can help it. Creative writing All accounting classes offered on campus should be online The following program to recieve BA for RHIA certification Anything Steve McCloskey teaches, anything Larry Ownes Teaches! Both are fabulous instructors. Unsure. I would like to see more cinema related classes or just basically all classes. Algebra 90 Don't know. Prefer in-person classes. n/a There are some classes I would like to take in class such as Excel. photoshop Most classes that are in my degree program are online Not that I can think of. no. i hate online classes.

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 15 I'd love it if Shorline offered physics 121 as a hybrid class, like North Seattle CC does. I would rather have taken physics at Shoreline. Anything that would work towards the zero energy program or the solar program. there are currently very little option to take classes online. No. I think that more classes should be available face-to-face as well as online for those of us who prefer the classroom setting. yes, I like online classes because of their flexibility. I like to see most of classes offered online. No, I would rather take a class face to face. I didn't like taking an online class. Variety is always good, especially for people who cannot go to campus. I don't have a specific course on mind but I would say that anything that doesn't require labs or personal instructions more critical would be good to have online. Not really, because I prefer to take classes on campus rather than online. I only do online classes when my schedule does not permit me to take the campus class. Just more. I think the program at Shoreline is great and if there were more options - the ability to get all of the GenEd requirements done online might be cool. no No, I really don't plan on taking more online classes in the future. I did this one as a last minute way to get a credit and did not particularly enjoy it. I really prefere face to face classes. I think all classes should be offered online, when classes fill up during the first few days of registration additional classes should be added Language classes!! Game design. Spanish language, or any language courses, I would hope that someday all classes would be offered online someday, at least lower level classes, so that college may be obtainable to those who cannot afford the luxury of day time classes or are too tired from working all day to take the limited number of night classes available. Standard Math classes. Standard English classes Sketchup

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 16 adsf There are no classes that I can think of at the moment. The ones that I need to take are already online, so I can't think of any others at the moment. don't know No they are all available online NOPE None that I can think of at the moment. I can't think of any but I would consider taking a class like marketing online if it was available. yes 1. multicultural studies (spring) 2. May be another for the summer Yes the Intro to Law and International Law and Human Relations are only offered in Summer? I don't understand why this is. This does not help those of us who work full time and are also taking college courses who may not be able to attend a daily on campus session. Its kind of hard to estimate how much longer student will need to get all required courses completed when your classes seem to be inflexible. Now if I want to get my degree done I will have to go to another competing college that offers these courses year round online- Highline. I would appreciate a response from someone on this. Medical Spanish I and II No preference yes, hopefully majority of courses will offer online options. It benefits a lot of people who have full time jobs and busy schedules. Not that I prefer. This was my first quarter strictly online, so I'm not sure. Probably not. I almost done. It would be nice to have more art-based classes online. More classes in general. I would like to see some sort of online music class, although it might be hard to do. But music theory online would be fun if there was some sort of program available with a keyboard or something. Nope, only at great need. foreign language classes

H:\Survey.Students\Winter2012StudentSurveyResults.xls 17 Communications Classes notifications and alerts for online announcements, and updates.
