FIRST YEAR COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: Expressive Arts Therapy: Visual Arts based (60HRS) This course provides students with a firsthand experience of Expressive Arts Therapy and its underlying principles and practice. Students learn to work with visual arts to reveal aspects of felt and lived experiences which are explored directly through imaginative engagement. Other art modalities such as creative writing, theatre, and movement are introduced with the focus being on their interconnectedness. Personality in Performance (88HRS) This course utilizes principles of creation and performance to consciously explore and play within a psychological arena where our various perceptions of self and the world are developed. Students learn to engage with the different aspects of the personality through creation of masks, theatre, body work, as well as by engaging with the playfully insightful, honest expression of the Clown. Practicum Preparation (12HRS) In this course students have an opportunity to explore practicum possibilities, and to practice applying Expressive Arts Therapy to working with peers. Learning takes place through instructor demonstrations and direct feedback from observations. Ethical standards defining competent practice are examined. Overview of Theories of Human Development (9HRS) In this course students learn about theoretical and research orientations that address attachment and psychosocial emotional development as they apply to the different stages of life, as well as how application of this knowledge can inform clinical practice. Therapeutic Themes Populations (36HRS) This course offers an examination of therapeutic themes and develops the skills required to identify therapeutic process and interventions necessary for addressing the needs of specific populations. Students examine foundation topics such as: Family Systems, Mental Health/DSM IV R, Loss, and Addictions. Students are required to conduct research in a chosen area and to present this to the class. Personality Theories and Implications (60HRS) This course provides a foundation for understanding models of psychotherapy and theories of personality. The development, structure, and functioning of personality, as it applies to pathology, and to fostering change and wellbeing is reviewed. The focus is on the three central approaches: dynamic, behavioural cognitive, and existential humanistic. Expressive Arts Therapy principals are contextualized and examined in relation to the theories. The Expressive Arts Therapy Program has allowed me to combine my passion for the arts with my passion for people and healing. Working now in the field as a group facilitator, confirms for me the healing power of the arts. Liza D Aguilar Expressive Arts Therapist Addiction Counsellor Actor and Singer

SECOND YEAR COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: Practice and Supervision (120HRS) This course supports students in their on site practicum. It facilitates the integration of class learning into practice and provides opportunities for students to address issues and questions arising from clinical work. Case materials provide the basis for learning about therapeutic themes, clinical practice, therapist self awareness and the application of Expressive Arts Therapy. Trauma and Expressive Arts Therapy (16HRS) This course delineates how Expressive Arts Therapy can be used to work with clients suffering from trauma. The first part of the course focuses on defining trauma and the antecedents and conditions for its occurrence. The second half describes how Expressive Arts Therapy can be used to recognize and process traumatic material and provide the necessary conditions for healing. On site Practicum (300HRS) Students apply Expressive Arts Therapy with clients within a wide range of community settings. Students are assisted in finding a placement, and every effort is made to place them in their desired site. Students are required to complete 300 practicum hours. The practicum runs in conjunction with the Practice and Supervision course. Expressive Arts Therapy: Drama and Story based (39HRS) This course introduces participants to the process of drama and storytelling as therapeutic forms, through the enactment of myths, fairy tales and personal stories and through puppetry. It develops skills in working with metaphor and symbol and teaches how choices made within a story structure may reflect our lives; the fears, obstacles, and traumas we need to overcome to heal. Expressive Arts Therapy: Movement based (60HRS) This course deepens and broadens understanding and application of Expressive Arts Therapy theory and practice with a concentration on movement based expressions. Students develop skills to integrate movement together with other art expressions, to work with metaphor and to move images between modalities. Intermodal and phenomenological perspectives are integrated. The expressive arts therapy program has ignited my creativity and has awakened my ability to embody emotional experiences as never before. It is also has brought new life into my work as a clinical counsellor in the field of addictions and trauma. My clients find EAT profoundly healing. The EAT Program is a life transforming journey.
