Offshore Engineering - Master's Degree Programme, 5 years Credits: 300 credits Level: Master's degree (5 years) Offered by: Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science Grade name: Master i teknologi / sivilingeniør Full-time/Part-time: Full-time Lower cycle degree: Yes Language of instruction: Norwegian, English Introduction Graduated students will have competence on master degree level in technology. They will have a basic background in mathematical science and basic engineering subjects and be able to apply this knowledge within an area of specialisation. As the study program consists of and rests on general principles and methods, they will also be able to meet and solve challenges on an advanced engineering level outside the area of specialisation and in close cooperation with experts from other fields. In particular, the candidates will be qualified to participate and manage developing and implementing new technology, methods and principles for the offshore petroleum industry above seabed. PROGRAM CONTENT, STRUCTURE AND PROGRESSION The program is based on the 3+2 model. The first three years the students follow the three-year bachelor program in mechanical or civil engineering, structural engineering. The last two years the students may choose one of the following concentrations / specializations Industrial Asset Management: is an interdisciplinary program based on subjects within engineering and management. This includes for example, operations and maintenance, cost engineering and economics, diagnostic and prognostic engineering and management, safety and risk management, industrial services, work processes and information systems, performance management and quality, as well as the interaction between human, technology and organization. A bachelors degree in all engineering subjects qualifies for further studies in Industrial asset management. Marine and Subsea Technology is devoted to systems and operations in subsea field developments. The program combines basic mechanical engineering subjects with marine technology and knowledge of systems and operations related to installation, operation and maintenance. Design of Subsea Production Systems, Modern Well Design are examples of central electives. page 1

M-OFFSH5 - Offshore Engineering - Master's Degree Programme, 5 years The study program comprises 120 study points in total. It comprises obligatory subjects up to 80 study points, elective subjects up to 10 study points, and a master s thesis up to 30 study points. Except for two subjects in second semester, the first year is common for all students, while the second year is devoted to specialisation, elective subjects and the master thesis. The study program is designed as follows: 20 ECTS study points (sp) in Basic mathematical subjects (denoted `B ) to continue the mathematical and scientific foundation from the bachelor program. 30 ECTS sp in common subjects mainly related to Core offshore subjects (denoted `C ). 30 ECTS sp in mandatory Specialisation subjects (denoted `S ). The students can choose specialisation within one of three areas: Industrial Asset Management, Risk Management or Subsea Technology. The students have the opportunity to apply for alternative obligatory specialisation subjects. For students with special interests and background this may be of particular interest in the second semester. 10 ECTS sp in Elective subjects (denoted `E ). The university offers a number of courses that are taught in English and the students can choose any of these, dependent of interest and qualifications. In particular, courses devoted to one of the other three specialisation areas will be of special interest and relevance for many students. For recommended electives only, the university guarantee collosion-free time schedules and exam plans. 30 ECTS sp in Master Thesis (denoted M). This should be done on an individual basis where a written report is mandatory that serves as a basis for the final grade. Master theses with industrial partners are highly recommended. In order to be assigned a topic for a master thesis, satisfactory progression must be demonstrated. The course descriptions provide further information on Lectures and instructions on academic activities Curricular, compendiums and projects Evaluation criteria Examination criteria UiS wishes to offer all its programs as planned, but courses still have to be subject to availability of resources and a minimum student enrollment. Also the content and scope of the courses will necessarily have to change over time because of professional development, use of new technology and general social change. Learning outcome page 2

Candidates with a master s degree in Offshore technology will be qualified to participate in developing and implementing new technology, methods and principles for the offshore oil and gas industry and for offshore wind power. They will also be qualified for many attractive job positions in traditional industries Industrial asset management: The candidates will have knowledge within engineering and management of advanced, complex and integrated industrial assets and production facilities/systems. The candidates will be qualified to participate in technology development and management of offshore production facilities in all life cycle phases, (i.e. design, construction, installation, operation, maintenance, modification and removal). Marine- and Subsea technology: The candidates will have knowledge within systems and operations related to subsea petroleum production and for offshore windpower. The students will also aquire good knowledge of systems and operations related to installation by combining basic mechanical engineering subjects with marine technology. Admission Requirements Generel university admission requirements + Fysikk 1/2FY and Matematikk R2/3MX/3MN or oneyear preparatory programs for engineer and maritime college education or technical college and 3MX/3MN. Admission information Applications must be sent to the National Admissions Office. Students follow the bachelor program in mechanical engineering the first three years. After admission to the program the students may apply to the faculty for permission to take it as part-time study. National curriculum For the first three years the program is consistent with the National Guidelines for Engineer Education which guarantee the unity and recognition of the program independent of institutional profiles. The guidelines also contribute to maintaining a high international level of Norwegian engineer foundation education. The program provides competence that will always be in demand in a modern society, and there is every reason to assume that the labor market will be favorable for such competence for many decades to come. This is particularly relevant in the areas of Industrial asset management that combines engineering and important management components for engineers. Marine and subsea technology are growth industries today. In Norway half of the petroleum produced comes from subsea installations and Norwegian companies are key players in all international markets for subsea and deep water technologies. The offshore activity off the Norwegian coast and in the arctic regions is expected to grow in the years to come. A completed masters degree may give admission to the PhD program in offshore technology at the UiS. Course assessment Form and/or discussion according to faculty guidelines. page 8
