APPIC MATCH: 2011-2014 MATCH RATES BY DOCTORAL PROGRAM Report Issued August 17, 2014 by the APPIC Board of Directors 2014 Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Centers

INTRODUCTION This report provides a summary of the results for the 17,450 students who participated in the APPIC Match over the four-year period from 2011 to 2014. For each year, the total number of students who registered for the APPIC Match are provided for each participating doctoral program, along with the numbers and percentages of applicants who were matched, not matched, or withdrew from the Match (i.e., did not submit any rankings). Information about the accreditation status of matched applicants' internship placements is also provided. Match rates are reported for each individual year along with the totals for the four-year period from 2011-2014. A separate report that provides match rates for doctoral programs from 2000-2010 may be found on the "Match Statistics" page of the APPIC web site, www.appic.org. The overall match rate for all 17,450 students was 75%, while 18% were unmatched and 8% withdrew or did not submit a Rank Order List. The match rates in this report are generally lower than the match rates listed in the reports issued at the conclusion of each year s Match, as those reports excluded withdrawn applicants from the calculation of match rates. Overall match rates for each individual year and for the 2011-2014 period are shown below and on the last page of the report. Two versions of this report are available: (1) sorted by state/province, and (2) sorted by university name. The following important points should be noted: 1. All match rates reflect placement activity in both Phase I and Phase II of the APPIC Match. While some unmatched students were able to find internship placements after both phases of the Match were completed, such as through the APPIC Post-Match Vacancy Service, such post-match placement activity is not reflected in this report. 2. The term accredited means that an internship program was accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and/or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time that the Match occurred. Any post-match changes to internship programs accredited statuses are not reflected in this report. 3. The percent withdrawn category should be interpreted cautiously, as applicants withdrew from the Match for a variety of reasons. For example, some withdrew because they had been rejected from all sites to which they applied and thus had no sites left to rank. Others found internship positions outside of the APPIC Match. Still others chose not to participate for personal or academic reasons (e.g., health issues, family concerns, wanted more time for dissertation, failed comprehensive exams). 4. The statistics in this report may differ from the placement statistics provided by doctoral programs on their web sites. In some cases, these differences may be due to the inclusion of post-match activities (e.g., students getting placed after the Match, an internship site getting accredited after the Match) in doctoral programs statistics. Information about APA s disclosure requirements for doctoral programs may be found in the APA Commission on Accreditation Implementing Regulation C-20: http://www.apa.org/ed/accreditation/about/policies/implementing-guidelines.pdf 5. refers to the year in which the Match was conducted. For example, "Match Year 2011" refers to the Match that was conducted in February of 2011 for the 2011-2012 training year.

6. This report provides participation and placement information only for those students who were registered for the APPIC Match. It does not include students who sought internship placement without registering for the Match. Doctoral programs can vary significantly in terms of the proportion of their students who use the APPIC Match in seeking an internship. 7. Comparison of match rates across doctoral programs should be done cautiously, as students' success in finding internship positions through the APPIC Match is only one potential measure of how a doctoral program has met its educational objectives. Furthermore, differences between doctoral programs (e.g., models of training, educational objectives, methods that students typically use to secure internship positions) can affect programs' match rates in the APPIC Match. 8. School and program information was provided to National Matching Services, Inc. (NMS) by each applicant at the time of Match registration, and then reconfirmed with the applicant by NMS. Directors of Clinical Training (DCT) of APPIC-Associate doctoral programs were also asked to verify the accuracy of this information. It is possible that a small number of applicants provided erroneous school, program, and/or degree information and that these errors were not corrected through the verification process. During the preparation of this report, a small number of registration errors (e.g., program type, degree sought) were identified and corrected. Thus, the statistics in this report may differ slightly from the numbers that appear in the Match reports that were issued at the conclusion of each Match. 9. A combined doctoral program could mean (a) a doctoral program that formally defines itself as a combined program (e.g., clinical-school), or (b) an informal arrangement negotiated by a student in which he/she integrates the curricula of two separate doctoral programs at his/her school. 10. Some applicants participated in the Match in more than one year (for example, those who were unmatched or withdrew in their first attempt). In such cases, the outcome of each attempt was included in this report. 11. The overall match rate of applicants from a doctoral program can be affected by the program's APA- and CPA-accreditation status. A list of programs that are currently accredited may be found at: APA: CPA: http://www.apa.org/ed/accreditation http://www.cpa.ca/accreditation/cpaaccreditedprograms/ 12. Doctoral programs in psychology must meet certain criteria in order to be eligible to send students into the APPIC Match. These criteria are provided in the "APPIC Policy on Doctoral Associates" that may be found here: http://www.appic.org/aboutappic/appicpolicies/dpapolicy.aspx This policy is subject to change, which means that previously-eligible doctoral programs may become ineligible. Thus, if a doctoral program is listed in this report, it should not be assumed that it is eligible to participate in future APPIC Matches. 13. This report was prepared by Dr. Greg Keilin, APPIC Match Coordinator.
