WHY IT IS UNLIKELY THAT PERSONALIZED FEEDBACK SHOULD NOT WORK IN GAMBLING Pieter Remmers, AssissA International Conference on Pathological Gambling and Behavioral Addictions 25-26 November 2014, Warsaw, Poland

QUESTIONS Where has feedback been applied? Was it successful? What about gambling?

The concept of feedback is very old A feedback loop is created when all or some portions of the output is sent back to the input. A device is said to an operating open loop, if no output feedback is being employed and a closed loop, if feedback is being used.

From Plato to Wiener Feedback plays an important role in Cybernetics Cybernetics is a transdisciplinary approach for exploring regulatory systems The word cybernetics was first used in the context of "the study of self-governance" by one of Plato s students in The Alcibiades self-governance is informed decision making!

3 common examples Behavioural based feedback is common and effective

Feedback in Healthcare Diabetes monitoring one area of Telemedicine feedback applications Maintenance of regular blood glucose level The system shows encouraging results Farmer, A., Gibson, O., Hayton, P., Bryden, K., Dudley, C., Neil, A., & Tarassenko L. (2005). A real-time, mobile phone-based telemedicine system to support young adults with type 1 diabetes. Informatics in primary care, 13, 171-178

Feedback in Healthcare Diabetes monitoring one area of Telemedicine feedback applications Glycated hemoglobin decreased significantly Triglycerides, HDLcholesterol levels were also improved Kwon, H.S., Cho, J.H., Kim, H.S., Lee, J.H., Song, B.R., Oh, J.A., Han, J.H., Kim, H.S., Cha, B.Y., Lee, K.W., Son, H.Y., Kang, S.K., Lee, W.C., Yoon, K.H. (2004). Development of web-based diabetic patient management system using short message service (SMS) (2004). Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, 66S, 133-137.

Smoking Cessation Personalized Feedback in Smoking Cessation High participation and retention rates Only 3 out of 110 discontinued the intervention Haug, S., Meyer, C., Shorr, G., Bauer, S., John, U. (2009). Continuous individual support of smoking cessation using text messaging: A pilot experimental study. Nicotine & Tobacco Research, 11, 915-923

Smoking Cessation Several other studies have investigated feedback for smoking cessation Riley, W., Obermayer, J., Jean-Mary, J. (2008). Internet Mobile Phone Text Messaging Intervention for College Smokers. Journal of American College Health, 57,245-248 Obermayer J.L., Riley W.T., Asif,O., & Jean-Mary J. (2004). College smokingcessation using cell phone text messaging. Journal of American College Health, 53, 71-79. Whittaker, R., McRobbie, H., Bullen, C., Borland, R., Rodgers, A., Gu, Y. (2012). Mobile phone-based interventions for smoking cessation. Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group, DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD006611.pub3

Speed Control Numerous studies have shown that dynamic speed feedback systems sustainably change driving behaviour Ullmann, G., Rose, E. (2006). Evaluation of Dynamic Speed Display Signs. Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 92-97. Knowles, J., Walter, L.K.. Effectiveness of Speed Indicator Devices on reducing vehicle speeds in London. Transport Research Laboratory, London, 2008. Donnell, E.T., Cruzado, I. (2009). Evaluating Effectiveness of Dynamic Speed Display Signs in Transition Zones of Two-Lane, Rural Highways in Pennsylvania. Journal of Transportation Research Board, 1-8

Sports and Activity

Sports and Activity Popularity and Research underline the effectiveness 25 million people use Runtastic An automated motivation support system can increase physical activity Hurling, R., Catt, M., De Boni, M., Fairley, B.W., Hurst, T., Murray, P., Richardson, A., Sodhi, J.S. (2007). Using Internet and Mobile Phone Technology to Deliver an Automated Physical Activity Program: Randomized Controlled Trial. Journal of Medical Internet Research. doi:10.2196/jmir.9.2.e7
