CHAPTER ONE: LEARN FROM THE GURUS When the internet marketing gurus do their product launches, they make it seem so easy, don t they? Because they already have a well established name, all that they have to do is unroll a product and people line up to buy it - or that s how it seems. But the fact is, nobody was BORN an internet marketing guru. And they didn t go to college and get a degree in Advanced Guru Techniques. They all started somewhere, they all learned how to sell, and that is what made them a big name guru. And you can learn too - by observing them and what they do, and how they do it. Some people call it reverse engineering - taking a machine or product or business or process, and basically taking it apart completely to see how it works.
I prefer to call it 'do what I DO not what I say' Many gurus, rightly or wrongly I'm not judging sell techniques that they don't actually use themselves. The wise marketer doesn't buy too many of these rather he watches what and how the guru operates and copies those methods. After all, if someone is doing something right, and it is a huge success, why should you reinvent the wheel and try to figure it out yourself - when the masters are already out there ready to show you the way? Now, if you asked them to show you how they do it, they would charge you huge coaching fees or hourly rates in the hundreds, or thousands of dollars. But you don t need to do that - all you need to do is copy what they do and you will vastly improve your success. Let s look at the traits possessed by the big name gurus, and what we need to do to profit by copying them. After all, what s the point in trying to reinvent the wheel?
Build Buzz Like The Masters First of all, they are masters at creating anticipation. Cast your mind back to some recent big name product launches that were huge successes - successes that you would like to achieve for yourself. Did you just open your email one day to find out that a new product had been launched by an internet marketing master? Of course not. You heard about it weeks in advance. Affiliates were promoting it left and right, competing to offer better bonuses. The guru had created a compelling sales page that teased you with information about the product and leaked just enough information to whet your appetite. The guru also sent out emails to everyone on their list dropping hints about all the wonderful benefits of this product and what it could do for you. They may have given away tidbits of valuable free information to show you how knowledgeable they are and also to give you an idea of how much good stuff is in store for you if you buy their product.
And on the big day of their product launch, they always have backup plans in place to ensure that their servers do not crash, that their payment systems are all lined up, and so on. Why? Because they have generated so much excitement for their launch that they have a stampede of people all buying their product at once and are likely to experience a server crash if they do not prepare for it! You should take a cue from them and make sure that you are prepared on launch day too. You will be working on generating massive anticipation for your launch and you want to leave your customers with a good experience when they buy from you - just like the gurus do. This is why you will want to do what they do and anticipate every possible thing that could go wrong on launch day - server crashes, payment system failure, etc. - and come up with a backup plan to take care of it. Never Stop Promoting You would think after a successful launch that raked in tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars, the IM gurus would be happy to go
on vacation and lounge around on the beach or a golf course, happily burning cash. The Internet Marketing experts don t sit back and rest on their laurels, however. They know that out of sight is out of mind. So they keep marketing their products, keep promoting, keep the name of that product - and their name! - in front of everyone. They accomplish a lot of things this way. They increase their sales - because a lot of potential customers do not buy right away. Those customers may not have the money right then, or they may need repeat exposure to the advertising message before they buy, or they may want to see what other people are saying about the product before they shell out the cash. And by continuing to promote the product, the experts keep their name out their in front of everyone and increase their visibility, so when they get ready to launch their next product they have that much more credibility and name recognition.
What Makes The Difference Between A Sale And No Sale? Let s say you have a great, high quality product. There is no real competition for this product, because yours is better than the others or there is nothing that does the same thing. You have wonderful testimonials from customers because you have tested the product out already. You did market research to make sure that there was a need for this product. But sales are lower than you anticipated. What makes the difference? Very often it comes down to something very small. If a customer is close to buying but decides to move on, it may not take much to tip them over the edge, into the buying mode.
Offer a free bonus This frequently is enough to turn an almost-sale into a sale. It can increase the number of product sales dramatically in fact. Take a cue from late night home shopping shows that offer a great product at a great price...and then throw in that set of free kitchen knives, or makeup kit, or whatever compliments the original offer, and make it truly irresistible, a no-brainer. Everyone loves to get gifts - so if you offer one to people who are already primed and ready to buy that often will seal the deal. You can test this the way you would any other element of your sales campaign - split testing the offer to see what works best for you. Look at the sales pages of successful internet marketing gurus and see how they do it. Many of them offer bonuses and they phrase their offer in a way that clearly communicates urgency - you must buy this product now to receive this free gift, or there are a limited number of these free gifts available, et cetera.
Of course when you say something like that you have to mean it or you will lose all credibility with customers - if they come back a month later and see you are STILL claiming they must buy by midnight tonight to get their free bonus gift. But done right, free gifts make happy customers!
CHAPTER TWO: SELLING STRATEGIES THAT WORK Certain internet marketing strategies are recommended time and time again, and there s a reason for that: They are truly effective. The Money s In The List One of the strategies that is recommended again and again is selling to the list. Every marketer should have a list of people who have bought from him or her. There a number of ways to get people to sign up for a list after they bought from you. You do not ever want to require people to sign up for your email list before they can get a product that they purchased.
This is likely to cause customers to get angry and not want to do business with you any more. However, you can offer them all kinds of incentives, such as a free newsletter with weekly tips, or free coupons for future products, or a free bonus ebook or half hour coaching session or all kinds of things. Just remember not to send out tons of sales emails to people on your list. Email them regularly enough that they don t forget who you are, but include some useful information in there to make them want to open your next email and to make them think well of you. When you do people favors, they tend to reciprocate. If you give them helpful marketing information every week in an email, they will be more likely to want to do business with you and buy from you in the future. The same goes for whatever field you are in. Health, weight loss, beauty, dog training, travel, art lessons, crafting...pass along your expertise to your email list and you will make friends and make more sales.
Offering a Bonus A good bonus can make or break a successful marketing campaign. The bonus should be related to what you are selling. It should have genuine value. If you can make it come with a limited time offer, so much the better. You can team up with other marketers and get THEM to provide the free bonus, by the way. Why would they do this? Because it benefits them, of course. They can provide you with a product of theirs that links back to their site - you can give it away for free and get more customers and more sales, they get traffic to their site, everybody wins. Don t just take any bonus that is offered to you though - make sure that it has some value and that it relates to what you are selling.
Remember The Back End Before you even create and market a product, be thinking about what else you could sell to customers. If your customer buys a video showing how to apply makeup, they may want a makeup kit that goes with it. Makeup brushes, eyeshadow, etc. - there are tons of possibilities. If you are selling a product that shows how to get better Search Engine Optimization then the client would likely be interested in all aspects of internet marketing and SEO. So have your entire system set up before you even market that product that you are going to launch. Have your prospects sent to an opt-in page, for instance, after they buy your product. Have the opt-in page designed and ready to go. Have your upsell product picked out, shopping cart buttons ready to go, and so on. The optin page can offer them a special one time price if they buy right away. Or at least get the customers on a mailing list so that you can contact them afterwards.
CHAPTER THREE: NICHE MARKETING Back in the early days when internet marketing first came to be, those who made a living online didn t have to specialize too much. There was not a lot of competition and it wasn t necessary to cater to a particular target market. However, competition these days is fierce, and if you try to target a broad general market like weight loss it will be nearly impossible to get good search engine rankings and to compete in an incredibly crowded field. That s why so many internet marketers these days have discovered the appeal of niche marketing. Niche marketing simply means marketing to a small subset of a group, such as new moms who want to lose weight or baby boomer men wanting to lose weight.
Of course, you want to make sure that a niche market isn t TOO small a subset of the larger market and that there is money to be made there. To investigate whether there is a hungry market there who wants to buy your product, do some research. Type in a phrase like weight loss for moms and see how many competing sites there are on Google. If there are none or are very few - that s a bad sign. It means that there isn t a lot of money to be made in that area. Also look for ads on the side of the search engine page - Google or Yahoo or whoever. If there are no sponsored ads, again, that is a sign that there is not a lot of money to be made from the audience. Try a number of keyword phrase variations when you search - such as, new moms weight loss, lose weight after baby, et cetera. Niche marketing does take some research but it is very rewarding to market to a receptive audience and sell them exactly what they are looking for. Another way to make sure that there is a market for your product is to search through forums on the subject.
Search for weight loss forums or new moms forums or weight loss after baby forums, and see if there are a lot of posts, see what problems they have, see what they are talking about and how you could help them. This way you will know what your market wants and needs and you will know that there IS a market that wants what you are selling. You will not be fighting to stand out among a huge crowd of marketers selling generalized products. You will not be creating a product that is too broad to be helpful - after all, new moms have different weight loss needs and challenges and lifestyle situations than overweight teenagers or 50 year old men or young single women. Of course, the downside of this is that you are not selling to as big a market - but that s okay. You are selling to a hyper targeted market that you have researched; you have verified that they have a need for your product, and you are able to stand out and sell a unique product, rather than one of a million copycat products.
CHAPTER FOUR: AFFILIATE MARKETING Many marketers have discovered a much easier way to make money than creating their own products. Creating one s own products can be rewarding but it s also time consuming and usually requires upfront investments such as paying for graphic designers and copywriters. It also requires market research, and the risk that the product that you have worked so hard on and paid so much money to develop - doesn t go over well at all. There is an easier way - and that is to let someone else do all of the hard work for you, and then reap the rewards of their hard work and their risk and their research. You can do that by becoming an affiliate marketer.
This means that you promote someone else s products, usually for a healthy percentage of the sale price - like 60 or 70 percent. They have already created the product. They have created the sales page. They have done the research for you. You can go to Clickbank or Commission Junction or numerous other websites and find affiliate products to promote. How do you get people to buy these affiliate products? There are lots of methods. You can go the review page route - review several products, put your affiliate link on there next to each product, and steer people to the merchant s sales page. Then, when people are searching for that product on the internet, they will find your review page and odds are decent that they may click on the product link on your page and buy it. You could also blog about a particular subject and include affiliate links on your blog. You can learn how to do Pay Per Click on Google and link to your sales page or review page (or you can do similar links on other networks like MSN or Yahoo.)
Then when visitors arrive at the page they may buy one of the products that you are reviewing or writing about. Some affiliates make hundreds of thousands a year doing nothing but promoting other people s affiliate products. And some don t make much at all. So you again need to study what others are doing to become successes in their field. Read through review sites, see how they write their reviews, how they lay out their page, how many products they review, and so on. Look at the web pages of other people who are promoting affiliate products in your chosen market. See what you find convincing and what you find unattractive and shoddy and unprofessional looking. Model your web pages after he better ones.
CHAPTER FIVE: MULTIPLYING YOUR EFFORTS Creating a great web site won t do you any good if nobody can find it, of course. That s like building a great restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Without traffic, your website and all of your efforts go to waste. And it can be hard to attract traffic with all of the competition out there. What many webmasters these days are doing instead of creating one premium website and spending all of their time and effort on it, is taking advantage of private label rights software and free content to quickly create lots of websites and make some profit off of each one. They can use blogging software like wordpress or blogspot.com and quickly create a site. Then they can fill up the site with articles from private label rights packages or ezine articles (as long as they credit the original author) and they will have dozens of websites up in no time.
A lot of webmasters are monetizing their websites with adsense this way, and making a pretty good living. So they would start out by creating a search engine friendly website or blog. They would fill it up with relevant content - consolidating debt, dog training, dieting, whatever the theme of the site is. They would create an adsense account and put blocks of adsense content on the site - being careful not to violate any of Google s terms of service, of course. So if they got dozens of visitors a day, and got a clickthrough rate of 5 percent or so, and each click generated a dime, the site might earn 10 cents a day. That doesn t sound so great, does it? That s $35 a year. That s really not a lot of money. But these sites take perhaps an hour to put together, get online, and fill with content. So why not create hundreds of sites like that? Some people have thousands of sites like that. Now we re talking some good money. And if you choose your adsense words wisely, and pick a high paying adsense area like debt consolidation or college loans or credit cards, the clicks can be a lot higher - like a dollar or two per click.
It s possible to make a six figure income from adsense if you practice, study the field, and learn how to do it right. You will need to make sure that you find cheap hosting, and cheap domain names, because if not that can eat into your bottom line. But once you have your system set up and your site is making a profit, you can repeat that many times over.
CHAPTER SIX: RECRUIT AFFILIATES TO DO YOUR SALES FOR YOU If you have a great product and you want to get the maximum sales potential out of it, the way to go is to have affiliates do your selling for you. To attract good affiliates you need to have done your work upfront. You need an attractive, professional sales page for your product. You need a quality product with a big market and a problem that needs solving, and money to spend. And you need a system for managing all of those affiliates. One way to do that is through clickbank. You can set up a vendor s account at Clickbank, or any other affiliate program site, such as 1 Shopping Cart or paydotcom. This will give affiliates a way to create an affiliate link so that when someone goes to THEIR sales page, or review page, and clicks on the link that leads to your merchant page...the affiliate gets the credit.
Traditionally merchants pay about 60 or 70 percent of the sale price of a product to their affiliates. This may seem like a very high number but think about this - those affiliates are getting sales for you that you would likely never have gotten on your own. They are also building up your list for you with every sale, so that you can sell to those customers in the future. They are going out and doing ALL of the sales work for you. They are creating websites that are selling your product. They are paying for Pay Per Click ads. They are marketing to their lists. They are blogging about your product. So you are getting 30 or 40 percent of the sales price - but you would not have gotten that sale without them promoting you in the first place. It also keeps your name out there in front of everyone - they are promoting your name and your product, which helps with name recognition in the future, with branding and with credibility.
CHAPTER SEVEN: SELLING INFORMATION PRODUCTS ON EBAY Yes, Ebay is flooded with super cheap selling information products, but that doesn t mean there isn t money to be made from this method. First of all, the cheaper products are the older ones that are often outdated, that have existed on ebay and the net for years and have lost most of their value. And secondly, even if you do end up selling your product cheaply, there are still benefits. You reach a whole new group of buyers who you never would have been able to reach otherwise. You get your name in front of people and, again, build brand recognition and credibility. You get to build a list of buyers. You can put links in your books to other products that you sell, and steer buyers to purchase more products of yours.
Remember the upsell and the list! Multiplying The Profits From Your Ebooks When you create an ebook or info product and sell it on ebay or anywhere else, there is always the potential to multiply your profits many times over. First of all, you can include links to other products of yours, throughout the book, or at the end of the book in a list of special resources. You can also include links to affiliate products that you are promoting. You can use the book as a giveaway to build up your list, or sell it very cheaply. You can offer your affiliates 100 percent commission on the ebook, which will make them work very hard to promote the ebook and will quickly build up a really big list for you.
PUTTING THESE METHODS TO USE All of these methods are tried and tested by internet marketers and have brought a lot of success to those who use them right. New methods and techniques come along all of the time, and that s why it makes sense to observe those who are successful and learn from how they do things. Sign up to internet marketer s mailing lists. Watch how they do a product launch. Read their emails carefully, pay attention to the subject lines, visit their product sales pages, buy some of their products and study them and, hopefully, learn from them! Observe their sales process when you do that and see what kind of sales funnel they have. See how they steer you towards higher end products or continuity programs or membership programs. After all, there is no point in wasting years of effort on trial and error when the online marketing superstars have already figured it all out for you!
This is exactly the strategy I use with my online business. I have studied the gurus, their products and strategies and looked at what really works and what I can apply to my business. There really is no point reinventing the wheel when there are real profits to be made by copying the pros. Sure not everything is going to work for you, Ebay s not for everyone, affiliates might not be something that you want to look at now. Pick something that suit your business, find something that motivates you and just go and do it! Good luck and I wish you every success.
