REFERENCE LABORATORY TESTING The Pirbright Institute carries out work on animal virus diseases exotic to the United Kingdom. Many of the staff working in The Pirbright Institute are international experts recognised by OIE, FAO, the EU and IAEA. Pirbright is the designated FAO World Reference Laboratory for: EU Reference Laboratory for: OIE Reference Laboratory for: Foot-and-Mouth Disease Ruminant Morbilliviruses Bluetongue Swine Vesicular Disease Foot-and-Mouth Disease Foot-and-Mouth Disease Swine Vesicular Disease African Swine Fever Bluetongue Rinderpest Peste des Petits Ruminants African Horse Sickness Capripox Availability of diagnostic services The laboratory offers an international diagnostic service for foot-and-mouth disease, swine vesicular disease, rinderpest, peste des petits ruminants, African swine fever, bluetongue, African horse sickness, sheep and goat pox and lumpy skin disease. A free service for analysing samples from livestock suspected to be infected with the above-mentioned viruses is available for up to 50 samples per country per year and testing is carried out on behalf of the national regulatory authority, to whom results will be copied. OIE / FAO will also be informed. Results will be provided as soon as is practicably possible. Senders should be aware that samples will be processed subject to laboratory workload and priority of submission. There is no cost for the testing but the submitter is responsible for the cost for shipping and customs clearance, which may be invoiced to you subsequently. Samples, virus isolates and deduced characteristics of the samples, such as genetic and antigenic data may be passed to others in order to facilitate international disease control and for the purpose of research into the development of improved disease control capabilities. 2

COMMERCIAL DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES The Pirbright Institute offers diagnostic services for: Non-vesicular diseases (performed in the Non vesicular reference laboratory) 1. African horse sickness 2. African swine fever 3. Bluetongue 4. Capripox viruses (goat pox, sheep pox and lumpy skin disease) 5. Epizootic haemorrhagic disease virus 6. Peste des petits ruminants Vesicular diseases (performed in the Vesicular Disease Reference Laboratory) 1. Foot and mouth disease 2. Swine vesicular disease 3. Vesicular stomatitis 4. Vesicular exanthema of swine 3

SAMPLE SUBMISSION Samples from overseas Samples dispatched from overseas must follow guidelines given in Reference Laboratories. Before dispatch, the shipment details must be agreed with The Pirbright Institute and a sample submission (http://www.pirbright.ac.uk/ref_labs/default.aspx) form must be completed and included in the shipment. Samples from the UK Veterinary surgeons should follow the procedures advised by Defra when reporting the suspicion of exotic diseases. Samples submitted from within the UK may be sent by post or special courier. Notification must be given by fax, telephone or e-mail message. All samples must be accompanied by a completed sample submission form (Reference Laboratories). To send samples for AHS, ASF, Bluetongue, Capripox, and PPR diagnosis to the Non vesicular diseases laboratory please address consignment to: Attention: Non vesicular disease laboratory The Pirbright Institute Ash Road Pirbright Woking Surrey GU24 ONF UK To send samples for FMD, SVD, VS and VESV diagnosis to the Vesicular Disease Reference Laboratory for virus please address consignment to: Attention: World Reference Laboratory The Pirbright Institute Ash Road Pirbright Woking Surrey GU24 ONF UK To send samples for FMD, SVD, VS to the Vesicular Disease Reference Laboratory for serological testing please address consignment to: Attention: Serum Assay Unit The Pirbright Institute Ash Road Pirbright Woking Surrey GU24 ONF UK 4

RETURNS Samples received into the Pirbright laboratory cannot be returned to sender or forwarded on to other laboratories including AHVLA. RESULTS Where applicable the results will be provided in the provided in the table below. In the event of a delay with the provided the submitter will be informed by e-mail or phone. Results will be sent by email unless otherwise requested and agreed in advance. In the event of a positive result for a UK sample the national regulatory authority will be informed. Subsequent investigation of suspected disease cases will be undertaken by the regulatory authority and all further communication should be sought through them. Samples, virus isolates and deduced characteristics of the samples, such as genetic and antigenic data may be passed to others in order to facilitate international disease control and for the purpose of research into the development of improved disease control capabilities. QUALITY Where highlighted (*) testing is carried out to the internationally recognised ISO/IEC 17025 standard for laboratory competence, subject to third party accreditation by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). 5
