What is MT4? The MetaTrader 4 platform, better known as MT4, is one of the most popular platforms for online trading. It is a straight forward, easy to use platform which provides tools to make a trader s life much easier. These tools include real-time charts which you can trade directly from, a variety of automated trading techniques, as well as placing and managing trades. For the purpose of this tutorial, we will only be showing you how to place an order on MT4. How to Install MT4? If you have a few minutes to spare, then that is how long it will take to install the MT4 platform. You can either choose to directly download it from the MT4 website (www.metatrader4.com) by following easy to follow step by step instructions or through your forex broker. Getting Started Once you have successfully installed MT4, we highly recommend you start demo trading prior to opening a real account with real money. It will give you an opportunity to get used to the platform and which trading techniques you are most comfortable with using fake money until you are ready to start using your own. How to Place Orders? Follow the steps below by clicking on the fields found on your platform to place an order successfully on MT4: To place a new order, click on New Order on the toolbar at the top of the MT4 terminal main screen: A pop up screen will appear with the order box. On the Type field, you will be able to choose one of 2 drop down options, Pending Order or Market Execution: Pending Order: The Pending Order window allows you to place an order that you wish to be triggered on a specified price. You will be provided with a drop down menu of 4 order types:
Buy Limit = buy lower than market price Sell Limit = sell higher than market price Buy Stop = buy higher than market price Sell Stop = sell lower than market price After choosing your pending order option, you will then be able to fill in the remaining fields where you can enter your price limits: Stop Loss = the price at which you wish to exit the trade to limit your loss Take Profit = the price at which you wish to exit the trade and lock in profit Comment = any comments you wish to add regarding your trade (optional) At Price = the price at which you wish to enter the market Expiry = the date/time you wish your pending order to remain valid until (optional)
Finally, click on Place Order to place your pending order. Market Execution: Now that we covered the Pending Order option, the 2 nd type of trade you can choose is the Market Execution option. This allows you to buy or sell by just clicking one of the tabs at the current market price. You will not have the option to place a stop loss and/or take profit at this point as you would in the Pending Order tab. However, you can add a stop loss and/or take profit only after the trade has been executed.
How to Close Your Position? Simply double click on your trade at the bottom of the MT4 terminal main screen: A pop up screen will appear with the order. Click on the yellow tab to close your position. Then you will be able to see if you have made a profit or a loss on the trade. Finding out which type of trader you are most comfortable to be can take some time which is why we always suggest Demo Trading for a period of time first. MT4 is an excellent platform for Demo Trading. Remember that not placing a stop loss can be very risky as your entire position will be exposed and can disappear very quickly if the price direction is not in your favor so we always suggest placing a stop loss to your order, especially as a new trader.
