Mobile works management and asset data
KERNMOBILE KernMobile is a leading software company, known for its unique, flexible mobile platform used by local government, utilities and contractors alike. Field crews can see and update job and asset details with the software, which integrates their data directly with head office systems. The company develops software, but also makes it work optimally for an organisation. Clients configure it, building forms for their own field data requirements. People with real works experience created the company in 2004, and have delivered the solution in many demanding and complex field operation sites. KernMobile has secured strategic reseller partnerships with system integrators, ERPs and vehicle tracking software companies. The company has grown significantly winning three consecutive placings in Deloitte Fast 500 for Asia Pacific, and in New Zealand s Deloitte Fast 50.
Get the whole picture from the field Built FOR COMPLEX assets AND data Good data is the key to organisational performance. Accurate, complete information on assets and resource use has real financial power for managers. The rise of mobile technology means better data can be captured in the field, with no paper, fewer errors and in less time. The KernMobile solution has been built for local government and utilities, and specifically for asset data. But our software also performs the role of foreman, scheduler and dispatcher. It keeps workers connected and on track in the field displaying and updating asset details, locating the next job with GIS, checking off safety and automating timesheets. The KernMobile enterprise wide mobile platform breaks down traditional silos, by showing the bigger picture across all asset types. Other mobile offerings are restricted to collecting data for one corporate system such as asset management or CRM, or to only one business activity such as roading.
One Platform for all data, all assets The KernMobile platform is not restricted to one type of asset or business activity. Enterprises create their own custom forms for any data type, by configuring the software according to their own business rules. One mobile platform can collect data for crew scheduling, customer services, asset management and regulatory systems. The assets can be water pipes or plants, trees and park equipment or footpaths. This eliminates the need for different mobile add-ons for each enterprise system, with data restricted to this parent system. Workers no longer have to learn and log on to numerous applications, re-entering data for each. Flexible and FUTURE PROOF KernMobile takes diverse data and pumps it into the right format into any, or all, head office systems. Water utilities can use KernMobile for all their freshwater and wastewater fieldwork, and councils can use the same software for the supply, maintenance and inspection of all infrastructure. Flexible Software > Future proof an organisation can choose to add on inventory control to its dispatch function later > Lower cost of ownership than specialised applications. With more business areas using KernMobile, the quicker the ROI. < Locating the correct assets using GIS. 4
Designed for Field Data in bright light, out of range, down a ditch, KERNMOBILE has refined ITS software over MANY years in the field. Workers on the job need good design - big buttons for big fingers, high contrast screens for sunlight, smart icons for quicker navigation. And organisations want to choose which mobile device suits the job - ruggedised devices, tablets, laptops, handhelds or mobile phones. KernMobile software can be used on the usual mobile field technology. Site Trialled and Tested workers can UPDATE asset information in the on-board database WHEN OUT OF RANGE, TO BE DOWNLOADED OR sent to base. GIS location coordinates and maps pinpoint the right asset to be repaired or inspected and its details show on the mobile device. If there are anomalies in the data, these are flagged as it is entered. KernMobile offers simple-to-use checklists for health and safety and traffic management which keep workers safe and jobs compliant with regulations. Site Tested Software > Forms are created for field crew around the way they work, using drop and drag and checklists > Visibility of right location and job, using smooth panning and zooming of GIS maps > Automation of timesheets and response times as workers enter data on the job. < Risk assessment checklists ensure compliance. 5
Mobile Data for Dispatch, scheduling and re-routing A VISIBLE workforce is more productive with automated scheduling, re-routing and real time WORKS management. Local government and utilities are now driven to improve operational efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of vehicles and equipment. KernMobile offers rational scheduling of crew, vehicles, machinery and equipment such as signage. Organisations can also use the software to assign supplies for each job, such as mulch for parks. Timely information on job status and completion means more jobs in a day. Intelligent scheduling saves organisations fuel, time on the road and time from errors, such as crews sent without the right skills or equipment. Crew Visibility FOR WORKFLOW KERNMOBILE software provides visual mapping of locations, jobs, crews, vehicles and inventory on a multi-view dashboard. Dispatchers can look at a single screen of assigned and unassigned tasks, plus vehicles and crew, for balancing workload. Response times for high priority jobs and emergency repairs are shorter, when dispatchers can see the location of the nearest or most suitable crew for re-routing. They then can send full details instantly (including GIS) to mobile devices. Crew Visibility Software > Faster response times and error free dispatch > Secure connectivity for fieldwork > Inventory control of supplies for each job. < Balancing jobs across crews, equipment and vehicles. 6
Data for Raising Operational Performance Paying for repair, replacement and depreciation of complex, expensive assets is the biggest burden on A large ORGANISATION s finances. Knowing the actual condition of these assets from accurate field data is essential to maintenance and lifecycle management. If pipes and roads are found to have a longer life expectancy than estimated, the cost of depreciation can be spread over many more years. KernMobile is software that can help deliver these sorts of savings. Insights FOR STRATEGIC DECISIONS KERNMOBILE software CAPTURES a comprehensive, visual picture of all assets - their location, their CURRENT state and previous repairs. Collecting consistent, comparable information for in-house asset management systems offers better strategic decision making, improved asset performance, optimised resources and reduced risk. Call centre and customer support staff work best with real-time information about jobs, crews and traffic hazards. And when maintenance is outsourced, our software encourages visibility and transparency for contract management. Contractors share real-time information on work as it is undertaken, so their council or utility can update maintenance budgets instantly, schedule new work and inform citizens. Insightful Software > All field data can be integrated into management systems for operational efficiency and reduced costs, eliminating paper. > Improved customer interactions and service levels when call staff can see instantly where crews are working and receive job updates > Meet regulatory requirements by automating the collection of key performance indicators such as response times. 7
Our Technology KernMobile HAS changed the way mobile applications are built for asset data capture. Previously programmers wrote rules for each type of asset, such as roads, pipes or parks, so there was a different software application for each job. KernMobile has taken a step back, using metadata with generic business rules and logic to create sets of forms and change fields, whatever the activity. The result is a mobile platform which gives crews access to head office data previously locked away, and they can update in the field. Clients use the introduction of the solution to streamline their business processes and improve the accuracy and completeness of their data. KernMobile helps clients configure the software so they can build their own forms and change them, without programmers. > Create tailor-made forms that reflect your workflow > Change forms, fields and checklists for reporting or compliance > Streamline business processes by adjusting forms in-house > Add data capture for new asset types. Our Components KernMobile works as an enterprise wide mobility platform for asset management, designed to enhance existing in-house systems. It S also a complete, stand-alone works management and scheduling tool. > KernMobile Field Application Software for the field worker. Runs on a range of devices - laptop, smart phone and tablet. 10 CASE 1 MELBOURNE WATER
CASE STUDY 1 / MELBOURNE WATER Melbourne Water workers rate KernMobile s ease of use As Australia s second largest water utility, Melbourne Water has been looking to improve the efficiency and integration of field working practices with corporate information systems. Key to this improvement has been a new approach to the flow of data to and from its many field operators through the adoption of a mobile technology platform. It called tenders for an enterprise mobility platform that would reduce manual data capture and increase accuracy and transparency through the use of advanced data validation and business rules. KernMobile was chosen to deliver an initial proof of concept as a three month trial, replacing 23 forms collecting data from 12 sites. Melbourne Water identified a number of field data requirements that weren t adequately supported by its existing mobile technology. Operators and maintenance personnel were not always able to access required information, or update it from their location, making daily duties time consuming and subject to delay and error. The utility loaded KernMobile software on Toughpad tablets, enabling operators to enter a wide range of data from water gauging to odour complaints in real time. This data is then available for integration with head office systems for management reporting and audit. Melbourne Water surveyed its crews after the pilot on the usability of the software and the tablets. The operators and maintenance personnel were unanimous in their support for the software s ease of use in the field, its design and its contrast in bright light. By involving field staff through a trial, the solution met with internal approval before it was delivered across all treatment plants. For the first time, field crews could determine instantly if the data they were entering was accurate, and they could amend or update data while on the go. The utility can ensure it collects information that complies with head office requirements such as storage levels, while reducing administration costs, inaccuracy and delay. Melbourne Water is creating its own electronic forms using KernMobile software to replace its many paper versions. These are based on standard business rules, although the utility has form variations for different plant features and locations. 11
CASE 2 FRANKSTON CITY COUNCIL CASE STUDY 2 / FRANKSTON CITY COUNCIL Frankston City extends mobile data from trees to roads Frankston City Council decided to improve the accuracy and quality of its asset information by going mobile. Tree specialists now locate trees for inspection using GIS on KernMobile. New plantings are entered in the software and delivered into the council s Hansen asset management system accurately. The data is now consistent as forms require relevant attribution for each tree, such as its genus and species. While on site, tree staff generate additional work orders to schedule other tree work that needs doing. The council is also using KernMobile as a works management system, dispatching roading gangs to jobs, with location and details on handheld devices. Workers can log road inspections and create work orders for further maintenance from each location. KernMobile enables Frankston City Council to integrate our mobile needs with Hansen, Pathway and IntraMaps. KernMobile is flexible, highly configurable and requires no programming skills to create easy to use interfaces for our field operators. 14 CASE 3 WAITAKI DISTRICT COUNCIL
CASE STUDY 3 / WAITAKI DISTRICT COUNCIL Waitaki District Council looks for transparency and visibility After engaging KernMobile to simplify the reading of 600 water meters using electronic entry, Waitaki District Council will use the software to track roading work. The automation has improved the accuracy of charging, as meter readers can identify meters that aren t functioning and customers not billed. Now the council is to use KernMobile to increase the visibility of its roading contracts. Its contractor SouthRoads will share its inspection and repair data from the software as it undertakes each job. The council will monitor the roading budget spend in real-time, as the contractor completes its bulk funded schedule of projects. Council managers will be able to identify problem areas and make rational decisions about maintenance and replacement. They will also have up-to-date job status reports to inform the public and track levels of service. Using KernMobile saves us time and money. Data used to be manually entered into our financial system, but now this step is completely automated. Water readings are more accurate and timely, and we get more information about what we need to fix and maintain. Gary Hill, Asset Management Systems Administrator, Waitaki District Council 15
