i Scientific Leadership Profile Self-evaluation of career Achievements: Sebastiano Maffettone is an Italian philosopher, currently Full Professor of Political Philosophy at Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome, where he is also the Dean of the Faculty of Political Science. He specialized in Social Philosophy at the London School of Economics and among other appointments, has been a visiting professor at Harvard, Tufts and New York University. He is a member of many scientific committees supported by Adriano Olivetti, Einaudi and Ernst & Young foundations. Professor Maffettone is also Director of Filosofia e Questioni Pubbliche, a semiannual review of political, moral and social philosophy and applied ethics. Professor Maffettone s research concerns the development of an original vision of public ethics within the context of Italy and international themes of contemporary political philosophy. He also takes interest in the philosophy of John Rawls and has produced an Italian translation of A Theory of Justice. Professor Maffettone has collaborated with several Italian journals and newspapers such as Il Mattino, Il Corriere Della Sera, Il Messaggero, Panorama and Il Sole 24 ore. He also directs two editorial columns, one edited by Liguori and the other by il Saggiatore. Professor Maffettone is the Director of CERSDU (Center for and Studies on Human Rights) sponsored by Luiss Guido Carli, a center dedicated to ethical dilemmas related to globalization. He has coordinated many projects on private and public research as well as national and international research, is the author of 16 books, and editor of several collective volumes. Professor Maffettone is widely known for his participation in academic and teaching initiatives in Italy and abroad, where he contributed to the academic debate thanks to his wide network of international relationships, participation in seminars, workshops and conferences in Italy and abroad. Presentation of the content and impact of his major scholarly contributions Maffettone is author of 16 books, many of which have extremely influenced the European scientific community. Two of his books Il valore della vita (Mondadori, 1998), and Etica pubblica (Il Saggiatore, 2001) bridge the gap between applied ethics and political theory, an achievement that constitutes the dominant theme of Maffettone s philosophical project. The first book presents a rationalist and liberal Lebenphilosophie. Its basic underpinnings come from bioethics, but go beyond this and propose a non-religious, comprehensive theory of life. The second book, Etica pubblica, presents the discipline s foundations, which the author brought to the attention of the Italian public. The most read and criticized chapters were those on business ethics. It is worth noting how, in the case of both these books, theoretical and practical experiences have found a felicitous convergence. Regarding bioethics, Maffettone was a member of the first ethical commission in an Italian hospital, under the direction of Prof. Umberto Veronesi (with whom Maffettone continues to collaborate) at the Istituto Tumori di Milano. Maffettone formulated the theoretical outline of business ethics, which is perhaps the most important Italian deontological code; since then, he drafted many other codes and formulated social budgets including the one proposed to Confindustria in 1992 in an extremely delicate political and social moment for Italy. Together with Ronald Dworkin, Maffettone published I fondamenti del liberalismo (Laterza 2008) in which the two authors presents their visions of liberalism, agreeing in some areas and diverging in others, such as the relationship between ethics and politics. This book opened an important critical discussion on liberalism in Italy. Recently, the most importance evidence of his intellectual achievements can be seen in his book La pensabilità del mondo (Il Saggiatore, 2006, English version forthcoming), in which he presents an original theory of the ethics of international relations based on the idea of pluralistic integration, which depicts an alternative to the neo-con cosmopolitanism. The core idea is that liberalism and democracy cannot be imposed from the outside but instead must come from inside a culture or a nation. The same kind of argument was formulated in two articles in English language, one focused on the European model of normative regionalism (published in the American journal The Monist ); and another on global justice

(forthcoming in a collective UNESCO volume, edited by Thomas Pogge for Oxford University Press, 2010). In the summer of 2008 Maffettone completed a very challenging book on John Rawls, meant to offer a general introduction to the work of the famous Harvard philosopher. The book will be published in 2010 (September) by Polity Press in the UK. Professor Maffettone is also completing a book on the philosophy of international relations, to be published later this year. International recognition and diffusion of these contributions Maffettone s synthesis of theoretical reflections and practical applications are also reflected in his participation to scientific commissions of influential cultural foundations (like the Fondazione Adriano Olivetti and the Fondazione Einaudi in Rome), and as a consultant on applied-science issues for institutions such as ENEA, CISPEL and MIUR. Maffettone is most certainly one of the Italian scholars with the strongest connections with foreign academic and scientific institutions. He was a visiting professor several times in the United States (Harvard, NYU, Columbia, Tufts, Boston College), where he was also a Senior Fellow with the program in Ethics and Professions (Harvard); furthermore, he was a visiting professor in France (in the Maison des Sciences de l Homme and at Sciences-Po in Paris), and in England (LSE). He has held lectures and courses in more than forty countries (just in the last two years in China, India, France, Great Britain, the United States, and Austria, just to name a few), and in many countries he has participated in international conferences and published his papers in the conference proceedings. As previously mentioned, these activities and relationships with foreign colleagues has proved to be long lasting. The many international research programs to which Maffettone participated and the PhD in Political Theory at Luiss Guido Carli that he founded are a strong evidence of this. Professor Maffettone s scientific activity is accompanied by - in addition to the scientific responsibility series in Atlante LUISS dedicated to international topics- the recent organization of a large academic network on Ethics and Global Politics. Evidence of the efforts and ability to inspire younger research fields Maffettone currently teaches in two undergraduate courses, Political Philosophy and International Relations, and one course at the PhD program on Global Justice. In addition, he is the Coordinator of the PhD program in Political Theory at Luiss University and the Dean of the faculty of Political Science. In the last five years, he supervised more than 100 Master theses and about 20 PhD dissertations. The PhD program- which is entirely in English and includes the participation of teaching staff from all over the world- is attended for almost 70% by foreign students and is the only one of its kind in the field of humanities. In particular, Maffettone has followed several works on Global Justice, Transitional Justice, Multiculturalism, Sustainability, Human Rights Theory. To mention only a few dissertations, he supervised the following young researchers: Michele Bocchiola, Valentina Gentile, Domenico Melidoro, Paul Robain Nabegabe. Dr Bocchiola is currently collaborator of the Center for Ethics and Global Politics. During his doctoral programme, he was visiting student at Harvard University. Dr Gentile is currently associate researcher at the CEGP. She is also collaborating at a research on transitional justice with the Department of Government at Essex University. From September 2007 to March 2008, she was Marie Curie Fellow at the Centre for Conflict Studies, University of Utrecht (Netherland). Dr Melidoro was awarded a scholarship by the Italian University La Sapienza to conduct his research at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr Robain is currently Lecturer in Politics and Coordinator of the Center of CEGEC ( Centre d étude et de formation sur la gestion et la prévention des conflicts dans la région des Grands Lacs), Congo.
