B. RECORD OF SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL EXPERTISE 1. Biodiversity and natural resource management under global change This topic corresponds to the denomination of the research professorship recently awarded by the University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde and which summarizes my current main research interest. Rapid anthropogenic global environmental change is considered as overarching threat to biodiversity. Main research questions, on the one hand, refer to the need, mechanisms and instruments of adaptation of nature conservation to the impacts and consequences of the manifold global change processes, especially climate change. On the other hand, we investigate needs and opportunities for biodiversity conservation to contribute to the mitigation of global change. Global (environmental) change is seen as a systemic challenge; therefore, it is one of my basic principles that any approach for dealing with global change must be based on the rules of systemic management. Special attention is given to the development of a systemic or system-theoretic approach to sustainability. Selected professional experience related to the topic Research professor for Biodiversity and natural resource management under global change (since September 2009). Among other activities it is planned to found an academic center related to the topic. Speaker of the cooperative graduate (doctorate) programme Adaptive nature conservation under climate change of the University of Potsdam and the University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde (since March 2009). Founder and head of the international Master study programme (MSc) Global change management (2005-2007). In the framework of the German-Bolivian development cooperation: Director of the Science Department of the Fundacion Amigos de la Naturaleza Noel Kempff ( Friends of the Nature Foundation Noel Kempff, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia) (1997-2003). o Initiator of conservation planning exercises taking into account climate change (Bolivia: Chiquitano Dry Forest, Amboro Madidi Corridor, Bolivia s national gap analysis). o Advisor of the Noel Kempff Climate Action Project (PAC) at the Noel Kempff National Park (avoidance of GHG emissions by deforestation; pioneering project of the Clean Development Mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol The Nature Conservancy, Government of Bolivia, AEP/BP America). Current research projects German protected areas and climate change (funding by the Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety/Federal Agency for Nature Protection, BMU/BfN; 2006-2009). 2. Conservation and sustainable development This field of my expertise is especially shaped by the approximately 9-years working and living experience in Bolivia and the related opportunities to collaborate with both development and conservation organizations (between 1991 and 2003). First-hand insights in the interdependence of poverty and the degradation of natural resources promoted the development of a rather applied and anthropocentric personal conservation approach, which very well matches CBD s ecosystem approach. Contacts to South American (especially Bolivian) institutions and colleagues are still important. A further geographical focus area is Europe (among others, eastern transformation countries, especially in the Carpathians). Applied research questions e.g. refer to the development of effective and integrative approaches and instruments of conservation planning and action that include but go beyond the establishment and management of protected areas (e.g., differentiated priority-setting in the framework of systematic conservation planning, adaptive management). Special attention is given to the identification of conservation targets including ecosystem goods and services. Selected professional experience related to the topic Consultant for SNV Netherlands (with IUCN, WWF): Backstopping assignment Assessment of the most valuable areas for biodiversity and development of a GIS data-base (2009). As professor for nature conservation at the University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde (since 2004; teaching since end of 2003) the lessons learnt in development cooperation have been transferred to teaching and were relevant in the context of thesis supervision (e.g., adaptive management of protected areas, use of natural resources). In the framework of the German-Bolivian development cooperation: Director of the Science Department of the Fundacion Amigos de la Naturaleza Noel Kempff ( Friends of the Nature Foundation Noel Kempff, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia) (1997-2003; funding by the Center for International Migration and Development, CIM). o Projects of ecoregional planning and conservation action (Southwest Amazon, Amboro- Madidi Corridor, Dry Chiquitano Forest; among others for/with WWF USA/Bolivia, WCS). o Compilation of a national assessment of biodiversity and its conservation for the Bolivian ministry of environment and sustainable development (see below: Ibisch & Mérida 2003/2004/2009). o Technical and scientific advice for the management of national parks (Amboro National Park, for CARE; Noel Kempff Mercado National Park) and adjacent rural communities (e.g., Bajo Paraguá), as well as for newly created municipal protected areas (Valle de Tucavaca). o Technical and scientific advice for a bioprospecting company focusing on the development and use of underexplored plant species such as botanicals, ornamental plants ( Canopy Botanicals ). o Biodiversity impact assessments and development of mitigation proposals in the context of exploration, exploitation and transport of oil and gas (e.g., participation in the founding, establishment and strategic planning of the Foundation for the Conservation of the Chiquitano Forest, FCBC). Consultant for German-Bolivian development cooperation (1993-1996). o o Current research projects Development of an agroforestry concept for a GTZ project region (Province of Arque, Dep. Cochabamba). Monitoring of implementation of integrative programme for the sustainable development of a model Andean region (Provinces of Arque, Bolívar, Tapacarí). Fundamentals of a modern management concept for the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, Ukraine (funding by the German Foundation for Environment, DBU). CV - Prof. Dr. Pierre L. Ibisch 6

Botany: species diversity, taxonomy and biodiversity mapping As I started my academic and professional career as biologist being solidly trained in organismic and ecological diversity, I always considered important to continue biological and ecological research in order to stay in direct touch with concrete elements of biodiversity, their characteristics and functioning. Thus, my conservation knowledge is rooting in deep understanding of selected taxonomic groups and ecosystems. The botanical and biodiversity-related research has been developed in cooperation with many colleagues all over the world (Austria, Bolivia, Brasil, Germany, Netherlands, USA). The contact with the Nees Institute for the Biodiversity of Plants at the University of Bonn, one of the major German institutions dedicated to biodiversity research is especially intensive and fruitful (e.g., recent joint PNAS paper on global endemism). Selected professional experience related to the topic As professor for nature conservation at the University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde (since 2004) implementation of various cooperative research projects with several partners. In the framework of the German-Bolivian development cooperation: Director of the Science Department of the Fundacion Amigos de la Naturaleza Noel Kempff ( Friends of the Nature Foundation Noel Kempff, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia) (1997-2003; funding by the Center for International Migration and Development, CIM). o Support of floristic inventory of selected groups and pioneering CD and book publications, especially Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae (see e.g., Vásquez & Ibisch 2000, 2004); establishment of living plant collection in Santa Cruz. o Participation in checklist of Bolivian flora (Bromeliaceae, Orchidaceae, Velloziaceae). CV - Prof. Dr. Pierre L. Ibisch 8

o o Projects related to inventory of potentially useful plants, crop wild relatives (cooperation with FAO-IPGRI), development of field guides; tissue cultivation of ornamental and endangered plants (establishment of a tissue culture laboratory).
