SERIES VERHANDELINGEN VAN HET KONINKLIJK INSTITUUT VOOR TAAL-, LAND- EN VOLKENKUNDE 4 Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde Edited by Rosemarijn Hoefte, KITLV, Leiden, and Henk Schulte Nordholt, KITLV, Leiden Initiated in 1938, the Verhandelingen, or VKI, is the longest running series of monographs and edited volumes on the humanities and social sciences of Southeast Asia and especially Indonesia. So far, over 280 volumes have been published by internationally renowned scholars. The series publications include classics in their field as well as cutting-edge modern scholarship. Informed by theoretical debates the volumes have a strong empirical orientation, thus providing the series with a lasting relevance. Today, the editors focus on history and politics, archeology, anthropology and urban studies, media and popular culture, as well as literature and linguistics. Two sub-series, viz., Power and Place and Southeast Asia Mediated, respectively concentrating on local politics, and media and popular culture, foreground the series mission of exploring new topics and themes. Dutch Commerce and Chinese Merchants in Java Colonial Relationships in Trade and Finance, 1800-1942 Alexander Claver Trading enterprise figures prominently in Indonesian history. Commercial activities penetrated deep into the economy, politics and society of the former Netherlands Indies. Dutch Commerce and Chinese Merchants in Java describes this, largely forgotten, world of commerce. During the period 1800-1942 this vanished world was, however, bustling. Merchants of very different background and stature cooperated and competed with each other. Trading relations were forged and dissolved, contracts were honoured and broken, fortunes were made and lost. Using unpublished archival sources in Indonesia and the Netherlands Alexander Claver recounts the diverse trading mechanisms, complex credit relations and countless participants involved. How Dutch, Chinese, and Arab traders related to each other in such demanding business environment is the fascinating story of this book. Dutch Scholarship in the Age of Empire and Beyond KITLV - The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies, 1851-2011 Maarten Kuitenbrouwer Translated by Lorri Granger Edited by Harry A. Poeze How was the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV), which at its inception in 1851 had fewer than a hundred members and only one part-time employee, able to flourish to become, around the turn of the twenty-first century, a modern, professional institute with 1,800 members with a staff of more than fifty employees. The Institute was founded with support from the highest political and official circles to gather scholarly information about the Dutch colonies in the East and West, not least to undergird colonial policy. KITLV played an important role in this, backed by the Ministry of Colonies and the business world. The Japanese occupation and decolonization led to a difficult process of adjustment for KITLV, which was concluded successfully. With its unique collections, publications, research and its office in Indonesia and involvement in the Caribbean, the Institute has an international reputation. This book is more than a report on 160 years of KITLV history. It is also a history of scholarly practice about the (former) colonies. These activities, and especially the publications of the institute and its prominent members, are measured against key terms such as orientalism and imperialism, universalism and relativism. Commodities and Colonialism The Story of Big Sugar in Indonesia, 1880-1942 G. Roger Knight Sugar yesterday was what oil is today: a commodity of immense global importance whose tentacles reached deep into politics, society and economy. Indonesia s colonial-era sugar industry is largely forgotten today, except by a small number of regional specialists writing for a specialist audience. During the period 1880-1942 covered by this book, however, the then Netherlands Indies was one of the world s very greatest producer-exporters of the commodity. How it contrived to do so is the story presented in this book. Author G. Roger Knight, associate professor of history in the University of Adelaide, has researched the history of Indonesia s sugar industry for more than twenty-five years, using unpublished archival sources in both the Netherlands and Indonesia. His search has taken him into government records, family histories and above all the extensive surviving papers of the Dutch sugar companies who operated in Indonesia during the late colonial era. The result is a picture of the industry that offers important new insights into its history and its place in the framework of global commodity production over a period extending over three quarters of a century. Making a Living between Crises and Ceremonies in Tana Toraja The Practice of Everyday Life of a South Sulawesi Highland Community in Indonesia Edwin de Jong The practice of everyday life in Tana Toraja (South Sulawesi, Indonesia) is structured by a series of public events, of which funerals are the most important. Even after Indonesia was hit by an economic crisis in the late 1990s, thousands of extravagant funeral ceremonies, requiring huge expenditures, were still organized each year. To understand the paradoxes and complexities of Torajan livelihoods, Edwin de Jong develops an approach that goes beyond existing economically biased perspectives on livelihoods by including both the cultural and the economic realm, positioned in the sociopolitical world with a transnational perspective, placed against a historical background, while not losing sight of diversity and individual creativity. It also advances the ethnography of Tana Toraja and the comparative study between numerous similar societies. Nuaulu Religious Practices The Frequency and Reproduction of Rituals in Moluccan Society R.F. Ellen How religious practices are reproduced has become a major theoretical issue. This work examines data on Nuaulu ritual performances collected over a 30 year period, comparing different categories of event in terms of frequency and periodicity. It seeks to identify the influencing factors and the consequences for continuity. Such an approach enables a focus on related issues: variation in performance, how rituals change in relation to material and social conditions, the connections between different ritual types, the way these interact as cycles, and the extent to which fidelity of transmission is underpinned by a common model or repertoire of elements. This monograph brings to completion a long-term study of the religious behaviour of the Nuaulu, a people of the island of Seram in the Indonesian province of Maluku. Ethnographically, it is important for several reasons: the Nuaulu are one of the few animist societies remaining on Seram; the data emphasize patterns of practices in a part of Indonesia where studies have hitherto been more concerned with meaning and symbolic classification; and because Nuaulu live in an area where recent political tension has been between Christians and Muslims. Nuaulu are, paradoxically, both caught between these two groups, and apart from them. The author looks beyond the popular dichotomy between rebel and martyr and unveils a politician whose legacy has been shaping the role of Islam in Indonesian politics for over fifty years. She thereby offers an alternative view of Soekarno as the leader of the republic and his antagonism with the Islamic state. In a blend of archival sources, printed material, and oral accounts, the author follows the career and ideology of Kartosuwiryo. The chapters delineate the gradual radicalization of the Islamic party and of Kartosuwiryo s own ideals from the 1920s to the 1950s. A testament to the relevance of historical research in understanding contemporary politics, Islam and the Making of the Nation guides the reader through the contingencies of the past that have led to the transformation of a nationalist leader into a separatist rebel and a martyr, while at the same time shaping the public perception of political Islam and strengthening the position of the Pancasila in contemporary Indonesia. Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde, 280 Following male figures wearing a cap (cap-figures) in temple reliefs of the Javanese Majapahit period (ca. 1300-1500) leads to astonishing results on their meaning and function. The cap-figures, representing commoners, servants, warriors, noblemen, and most significantly Prince Panji, the hero from the East Javanese Panji stories, are unique to depictions of non-indic narratives. The capfigure constitutes a prominent example of Majapahit s creativity in new concepts of art, literature and religion, independent from the Indian influence. More than that, the symbolic meaning of the cap-figures leads to an esoteric level: a pilgrim who followed the depictions of the cap-figures and of Panji in the temples would have been guided to the Tantric doctrine within Hindu-Buddhist religion. Dairi Stories and Pakpak Storytelling A Storytelling Tradition from the North Sumatran Rainforest Clara Brakel This study of traditional literature in Pakpak-Dairi, an endangered North Sumatran language, is based on written and oral versions of stories. Discussing the views of well-known scholars of Sumatran languages, the book includes the texts of seven stories which were collected in North Sumatra by the well-known linguist Herman Neubronner van der Tuuk (1824-1894) and are kept in Leiden University Library. The book also contains a story performed in the village of Sukarame by Sonang Sitakar, who may well have been one of the last PakpakDairi storytellers. Regime Change and Ethnic Politics in Indonesia Dayak Politics of West Kalimantan Taufiq Tanasaldy When the Indonesian New Order regime fell in 1998, regional politics with strong ethnic content emerged across the country. In West Kalimantan the predominant feature was particularly that of the Dayaks. This surge, however, was not unprecedented. After centuries of occupying a subordinate place in the political and social hierarchy under the nominal rule of the Malay sultanates, Dayaks became involved in an enthusiastic political emancipation movement from 1945. The Dayaks secured the governorship as well as the majority of the regional executive head positions before they were shunned by the New Order regime. This book examines the development of Dayak politics in West Kalimantan from the colonial times until the first decade of the 21th century. It asks how and why Dayak politics has experienced drastic changes since 1945. It will look at the effect of regime change, the role of the individual leaders and organizations, the experience of marginalization, and conflicts on the course of Dayaks politics. It will also examine ethnic relations and recent political development up to 2010 in the province. Originally published with imprint KITLV Press (ISBN 9789067183895). Healers on the Colonial Market Native Doctors and Midwives in the Dutch East Indies Liesbeth Hesselink Healers on the Colonial Market is one of the few studies on the Dutch East Indies from a postcolonial perspective. It provides an enthralling addition to research on both the history of the Dutch East Indies and the history of colonial medicine. This book will be of interest to historians, historians of science and medicine, and anthropologists. How successful were the two medical training programmes established in Jakarta by the colonial government in 1851? One was a medical school for Javanese boys, and the other a school for midwives for Javanese girls, and the graduates were supposed to replace native healers, the dukun. However, the indigenous population was not prepared to use the services of these doctors and midwives. Native doctors did in fact prove useful as vaccinators and assistant doctors, but the school for midwives was closed in 1875. Even though there were many horror stories of mistakes made during dukun-assisted deliveries, the school was not reopened, and instead a handful of girls received practical training from European physicians. Under the Ethical Policy there was more attention for the welfare of the indigenous population and the need for doctors increased. More native boys received medical training and went to work as general practitioners. Originally published with imprint KITLV Press (ISBN 9789067183826). Heirs to World Culture Being Indonesian, 1950-1965 Edited by Jennifer Lindsay and Maya H.T. Liem This volume brings together new scholarship by Indonesian and non- Indonesian scholars on Indonesia s cultural history from 1950-1965. During the new nation s first decade and a half, Indonesia s links with the world and its sense of nationhood were vigorously negotiated on the cultural front. Indonesia used cultural networks of the time, including those of the Cold War, to announce itself on the world stage. International links, postcolonial aspirations and nationalistic fervour interacted to produce a thriving cultural and intellectual life at home. Essays discuss the exchange of artists, intellectuals, writing and ideas between Indonesia and various countries; the development of cultural networks; and ways these networks interacted with and influenced cultural expression and discourse in Indonesia. VERHANDELINGEN VAN HET KONINKLIJK INSTITUUT VOOR TAAL-, LAND- EN VOLKENKUNDE 8 Lords of the Land, Lords of the Sea Conflict and Adaptation in Early Colonial Timor, 1600-1800 Hans Hägerdal European traders and soldiers established a foothold on Timor in the course of the seventeenth century, motivated by the quest for the commercially vital sandalwood and the intense competition between the Dutch and the Portuguese. Lords of the Land, Lords of the Sea focuses on two centuries of contacts between the indigenous polities on Timor and the early colonials, and covers the period 1600-1800. In contrast with most previous studies, the book treats Timor as a historical region in its own right, using a wide array of Dutch, Portuguese and other original sources, which are compared with the comprehensive corpus of oral tradition recorded on the island. From this rich material, a lively picture emerges of life and death in early Timorese society, the forms of trade, slavery, warfare, alliances, social life, and so forth. The investigation demonstrates that the European groups, although having a role as ordering political forces, were only part of the political landscape of Timor. They relied on alliances where the distinction between ally and vassal was moot, and led to frequent conflicts and uprisings. During a slow and complicated process, the often turbulent political conditions involving Europeans, Eurasians, and Timorese polities, paved the way for the later division of Timor into two spheres of roughly equal size. Cleanliness and Culture Indonesian Histories Edited by Kees van Dijk and Jean Gelman Taylor Recent years have shown an increase in interest in the study of cleanliness from a historical and sociological perspective. Many of such studies on bathing and washing, on keeping the body and the streets clean, and on filth and the combat of dirt, focus on Europe. In Cleanliness and Culture attention shifts to the tropics, to Indonesia, in colonial times as well as in the present. Subjects range from the use of soap and the washing of clothes as a pretext to claim superiority of race and class to how references to being clean played a role in a campaign against European homosexuals in the Netherlands Indies at the end of the 1930s. Other topics are eerie skin diseases and the sanitary measures to eliminate them, and how misconceptions about lack of hygiene as the cause of illness hampered the finding of a cure. Attention is also drawn to differences in attitude towards performing personal body functions outdoors and retreating to the privacy of the bathroom, to traditional bathing ritual and to the modern tropical Spa culture as a manifestation of a New Asian lifestyle. A Literary Mirror Balinese Reflections on Modernity and Identity in the Twentieth Century I. Nyoman Darma Putra A Literary mirror is the first Englishlanguage work to comprehensively analyse Indonesian-language literature from Bali from a literary and cultural viewpoint. It covers the period from 1920 to 2000. This is an extremely rich field for research into the ways Balinese view their culture and how they respond to external cultural forces. This work complements the large number of existing studies of Bali and its history, anthropology, traditional literature, and the performing arts. A Literary Mirror is an invaluable resource for those researching twentieth-century Balinese authors who wrote in Indonesian. Until now, such writers have received very little attention in the existing literature. An appendix gives short biographical details of many significant writers and lists their work. SERIES VERHANDELINGEN VAN HET KONINKLIJK INSTITUUT VOOR TAAL-, LAND- EN VOLKENKUNDE 10 Southeast Asia Mediated Edited by Bart Barendregt, KITLV, Leiden, and Ariel Heryanto, Australian National University Southeast Asia Mediated is a subseries of Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde. The subseries deals with media in Southeast Asia. Both old and new media, mass, alternative and grass roots, both today and in the past. Sonic Modernities in the Malay World A History of Popular Music, Social Distinction and Novel Lifestyles (1930s 2000s) Edited by Bart Barendregt, Leiden University Sonic Modernities situates Southeast Asian popular music in specific sociohistorical settings, hoping that a focus on popular culture and history may shed light on how some people in a particular part of the world have been witnessing the emergence of all things modern. In its focus on pioneering artists, their creative use of new genres and border crossing technologies it aims at a rewriting of Southeast Asia s twentieth century from the perspective of popular music makers, the entertainment industry and its ever changing audiences. Recollecting Resonances Indonesian-Dutch Musical Encounters Edited by Bart Barendregt, University of Leiden and Els Bogaerts Over time Dutch and Indonesian composers, performers and music scholars have inspired each other and they continue to do so. The presence of the Dutch in the Netherlands East-Indies and Indonesia, but also the existence of large diasporic communities in the Netherlands have contributed to a mutual exchange in musical terms: from military brass bands, classical and liturgical music to jazz, Indo rock and more recently world music. Yet, such musical interactions have often been shaped by unequal power balances, and very divergent motifs to start with. Recollecting Resonances offers musicological, historical and anthropological explorations into those musical encounters that have been shaped in both the past and present. The resulting mutual heritage can still be listened to today. Culture, Power, and Authoritarianism in the Indonesian State Cultural Policy across the Twentieth Century to the Reform Era Tod Jones, Curtin University Culture, Power, and Authoritarianism in the Indonesian State is a critical history of cultural policy in one of the world s most diverse nations across the tumultuous twentieth century. It charts the influence of momentous political changes on the cultural policies of successive states, including colonial government, Japanese occupation, the killing and repression of the left and their affiliates, and the return of representative government, and examines broader social changes like nationalism and consumer culture. The book uses the concept of authoritarian cultural policy, or cultural policy that was premised on increased state control, tracing its presence from the colonial era until today. Tod Jones use of historical and case study chapters captures the central state s changing cultural policies and its diverse outcomes across Indonesia. Musical Worlds in Yogyakarta Max M. Richter Musical Worlds in Yogyakarta is an ethnographic account of a vibrant Indonesian city during the turbulent early post-soeharto years. The book examines musical performance in public contexts ranging from the street and neighbourhood through to commercial venues and state environments such as Yogyakarta s regional parliament, its military institutions, universities and the Sultan s palace. It focuses on the musical tastes and practices of street workers, artists, students and others. From street-corner jam sessions to large-scale concerts, a range of genres emerge that cohere around notions of campursari ( mixed essences ) and jalanan ( of the street ). Musical Worlds in Yogyakarta addresses themes of social identity and power, counterpoising Pierre Bourdieu s theories on class, gender and nation with the author s alternative perspectives of intergroup social capital, physicality and grounded cosmopolitanism. The author argues that Yogyakarta is exemplary of how everyday people make use of music to negotiate issues of power and at the same time promote peace and intergroup appreciation in culturallydiverse inner-city settings. Contemporary Indonesian Film Spirits of Reform and Ghosts from the Past Katinka van Heeren This highly informative book explores the world of Post-Soeharto Indonesian audio-visual media in the exiting era of Reform. From a multidisciplinary approach it considers a wide variety of issues such as mainstream and alternative film practices, ceremonial and independent film festivals, film piracy, history and horror, documentary, television soaps, and Islamic films, as well as censorship from the state and street. Through the perspective of discourses on, and practices of film production, distribution, and exhibition, this book gives a detailed insight into current issues of Indonesia s social and political situation, where Islam, secular realities, and ghosts on and off screen, mingle or clash. SERIES VERHANDELINGEN VAN HET KONINKLIJK INSTITUUT VOOR TAAL-, LAND- EN VOLKENKUNDE 12 Power and Place in Southeast Asia Edited by Gerry van Klinken, KITLV, and Edward Aspinall, Australian National University The series examines social struggles and their connection with the particularity of places in Southeast Asia. The declining potency of national states is shifting more scholarly attention to locally rooted contentions. Local politics are becoming a major focus of study in the region. From the slums to luxurious malls, from logging camps to coastal reefs, movements of identity and common interests are challenging the great homogeneities that once characterised our thinking about the nation-state. Whether they revolve around bureaucratic resources, housing, land, forests or water, they deploy cultural themes that mix memories of tradition with intimations of modernity. The series will embrace an ecumenicity of innovative approaches within the humanities, social and political sciences, while retaining a central role for power and place. The Making of Middle Indonesia Middle Classes in Kupang town, 1930s-1980s Gerry van Klinken, University of Amsterdam What holds Indonesia together? A strong leader is the answer most often given. This book looks instead at a middle level of society. Middle classes in provincial towns around the vast archipelago mediate between the state and society and help to constitute state power. Middle Indonesia is a social zone connecting extremes. The Making of Middle Indonesia examines the rise of an indigenous middle class in one provincial town far removed from the capital city. Spanning the late colonial to early New Order periods, it develops an unusual, associational notion of political power. Soft modalities of power included non-elite provincial people in the emerging Indonesian state. At the same time, growing inequalities produced class tensions that exploded in violence in 1965-1966. In Search of Middle Indonesia Middle Classes in Provincial Towns Gerry van Klinken, University of Amsterdam, and Ward Berenschot, KITLV, Leiden The post-1998 surge in local politics has moved the provincial town back to centre stage. This book examines the Indonesian middle class (now 43%!) up close in the place where its members are most at home: the town. Middle Indonesia generates national political forces, yet it is neither particularly rich nor geographically central. This is an overwhelmingly lower middle class, a conservative petty bourgeoisie barely out of poverty and tied to the state. Middle Indonesia rather resists than welcomes globalized, open markets. Politically, it enjoys democracy but uses its political skills and clientelistic networks to make the system work to its advantage, which is not necessarily that of either the national elites or the poor. A Few Poorly Organized Men Interreligious Violence in Poso, Indonesia Dave McRae, Lowy Institute for International Policy, Sydney Despite no prior history of recent unrest, Poso, from 1998-2007, became the site of the most protracted interreligious conflict in postauthoritarian Indonesia, as well as one of the most important theatres of operations for the Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist network. Nine years of violent conflict between Christians and Muslims in Poso elevated a previously little known district in eastern Indonesia to national and global prominence. Drawing on a decade of research, for the most part conducted while the conflict was ongoing, this book provides the first comprehensive history of this violence. It also addresses the puzzle of why the Poso conflict was able to persist for so long in an increasingly, stable democratic state, despite the manifest weaknesses of the small groups of men driving the violence. At the Edges of States Dynamics of State Formation in the Indonesian Borderlands Michael Eilenberg Set in West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, this study explores the shifting relationships between border communities and the state along the political border with East Malaysia. The book rests on the premise that remote border regions offer an exciting study arena that can tell us important things about how marginal citizens relate to their nation-state. The basic assumption is that central state authority in the Indonesian borderlands has never been absolute, but waxes and wanes, and state rules and laws are always up for local interpretation and negotiation. In its role as key symbol of state sovereignty, the borderland has become a place where central state authorities are often most eager to govern and exercise power. But as illustrated, the borderland is also a place where state authority is most likely to be challenged, questioned and manipulated as border communities often have multiple loyalties that transcend state borders and contradict imaginations of the state as guardians of national sovereignty and citizenship. The State and Illegality in Indonesia Edited by Edward Aspinall and Gerry van Klinken The popular 1998 reformasi movement that brought down President Suharto s regime demanded an end to illegal practices by state officials, from human rights abuse to nepotistic investments. Yet today, such practices have proven more resistant to reform than people had hoped. Many have said corruption in Indonesia is entrenched. We argue it is precisely this entrenched character that requires attention. What is state illegality entrenched in and how does it become entrenched? This involves studying actual cases. Our observations led us to rethink fundamental ideas about the nature of the state in Indonesia, especially regarding its socially embedded character. We conclude that illegal practices by state officials are not just aberrations to the state, they are the state. Almost invariably, illegality occurs as part of collective, patterned, organized and collaborative acts, linked to the competition for political power and access to state resources. While obviously excluding many without connections, corrupt behaviour also plays integrative and stabilizing functions. Especially at the lower end of the social ladder, it gets a lot of things done and is often considered legitimate. SERIES Caribbean Series Geweld in de West Lachen, huilen, bevrijden Edited by Rosemarijn Hoefte, Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies, and Gert Oostindie, Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies The Caribbean is a region created largely in conditions of colonialism, slavery, and indentured labor by people of Amerindian, African, European, American, and Asian origins. In this crucible of cultures, the process of Creolization blended population groups, languages, and cultures to the extent that despite its enduring heterogeneity, the Caribbean forms a cohesive geographical and cultural area. Both colonial and postcolonial experiences have been diverse, but this series focuses on common histories and socioeconomic, cultural, and political experiences. Advocating a Pan- Caribbean perspective, the series favors comparative contributions on continuities and discontinuities in the colonial and postcolonial eras. The Caribbean Series publishes peerreviewed monographs and edited volumes in the humanities and social sciences. We particularly welcome manuscripts covering comparative and interdisciplinary subjects in Caribbean Studies. Curaçao in the Age of Revolutions, 1795-1800 Een zwarte vrijstaat in Suriname (Part 2) Een zwarte vrijstaat in Suriname CARIBBEAN SERIES 24 Edited by Wim Klooster, Clark University, and Gert Oostindie, KITLV/ Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies and Leiden University From 1795 through 1800, a series of revolts rocked Curaçao, a small but strategically located Dutch colony just off the South American continent. A combination of internal and external factors produced these uprisings, in which free and enslaved islanders particiapted with various objectives. A major slave revolt in August 1795 was the opening salvo for these tumultuous five years. While this revolt is a wellknown episode in Curaçao an history, its wider Caribbean and Atlantic context is much less known. Also lacking are studies sketching a clear picture of the turbulent five years that followed. It is in these dark corners that this volume aims to shed light. The events discussed in this book fall squarely within the Age of Revolutions, the period that began with the onset of the American Revolution in 1775, was punctuated by the demise of the ancien régime in France, saw the establishment of a black state in Haiti, and witnessed the collapse of Spanish rule in mainland America. All of these revolutions seemed to converge by the late eighteenth century in Curaçao. The seven contributions in this volume provide new insights in the nature of slave resistance in the Age of Revolutions, the remarkable flows of people and ideas in the late eighteenthcentury Caribbean, and the unique local history of Curaçao. Thoden van Velzen In Een zwarte vrijstaat in Suriname, deel 2, Van Wetering and Thoden van Velzen relate the history of the Okanisi after their successful escape into the South American rainforest and the signing of a peace treaty with Dutch planters in 1760. Following Part 1, which deals with their struggle for freedom, this volume describes the emergence of an autonomous Okanisi Maroon state; its integration into the economic life of the Guiana s, but also its internal development, as it manifested itself through prophetic movements, antiwitchcraft purges and the rise of a native church. Predominantly based on oral sources, this book charts a previously undocumented history and provides a unique insight into a culture emerging from the roots of slavery. Creole Jews Negotiating Community in Colonial Suriname Wieke Vink This study presents a refined analysis of Surinames-Jewish identifications. The story of the Surinamese Jews is one of a colonial Jewish community that became ever more interwoven with the local environment of Suriname. Ever since their first settlement, Jewish migrants from diverse backgrounds, each with their own narrative of migration and settlement, were faced with challenges brought about by this new environment; a colonial order and, in essence, a race-based slave society. A place, furthermore, that was constantly changing: economically, socially, demographically, politically and culturally. Against this background, the Jewish community transformed from a migrant community into a settlers community. Both the Portuguese and High German Jews adopted Paramaribo as their principal place of residence from the late eighteenth century onwards. Radical economic changes most notably the decline of the Portuguese-Jewish planters class not only influenced the economic wealth of the Surinamese Jews as a group, but also had considerable impact on their social status in Suriname s society. The story of the Surinamese Jews is a prime example of the many ways in which a colonial environment and diasporic connections put their stamp on everyday life and affected the demarcation of community boundaries and group identifications. The Surinamese-Jewish community debated, contested and negotiated the pillars of a Surinamese-Jewish group identity not only among themselves but also with the colonial authorities. This book is based on the author s dissertation. In Search of a Path An Analysis of the Foreign Policy of Suriname from 1975 to 1991 Roger Janssen The foreign policy of small states is an often neglected topic, which is particularly the case when it comes to Suriname. How did the young Republic deal with its dependency on the Netherlands for development aid after 1975? Was Paramaribo following a certain foreign policy strategy or did it merely react towards internal and external events? What were the decision making processes in defining the foreign policy course and who was involved in these processes? And why was a proposal discussed to hand back the right of an independent foreign and defence policy to a Dutch Commonwealth government in the early 1990s? These questions are examined here in depth, in the first comprehensive analysis of Suriname s foreign policy from 1975 to 1991. The book provides readers interested in Caribbean and Latin American affairs with a detailed account of Suriname s external relations. Moreover, the young Republic may stand as a case study, as it confronted the difficulties and challenges that small developing states often face. SERIES Biblioteca Indonesica Edited by the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land-, en Volkenkunde Mpu Monaguṇa s Sumanasāntaka An Old Javanese Epic Poem, its Indian Source and Balinese Illustrations Edited, translated and annotated by Peter Worsley, S. Supomo, Thomas Hunter, and Margaret Fletcher Mpu Monaguṇa s early thirteenth century epic poem Sumanasāntaka is a vernacular rendering of Kālidāsa s story of Prince Aja and Princess Indumatī told in the Raghuvaṃśa. In it the poet exploits his source narrative to describe and comment on the Javanese world of his times. In Mpu Monaguṇa s Sumanasāntaka the authors offer an edited text and translation of Mpu Monaguṇa s epic kakawin and extensive commentary on the editing of the manuscripts and history of the poem and its story, the relationship between the Old Javanese poem and Kālidāsa s Raghuvaṃśa, the way in which the poem imagines the lived environment of ancient Java in the early thirteenth century and Balinese painted representations of the story of Prince Aja and Princess Indumatī. The Makassar Annals Translated and edited by William Cummings Beginning in the 1630s, a series of analysts at the main courts of Makassar began keeping records with dated entries that recorded a wide variety of specific historical information about a wide variety of topics, including the births and deaths of notable individuals, the actions of rulers, the spread of Islam, trade and diplomacy, the built environment, ritual activity, warfare, internal political struggles, social and kinship relations, eclipses and comets, and more. These Lontaraq bilang were a clear departure in form and function from the genealogicallystructured chronicles being composed about the ruling families of Gowa and Talloq in the same era. By the end of 1751, nearly 2400 entries had been completed. These records are a rich lode of information for scholars interested in virtually any aspect of life in premodern Makassar, and are a rare and precious resource for scholars of Southeast Asia. This is the first English translation and annotation of the annals. SERIES Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 3 Southeast Asia A Dictionary of the Kedang Language Kedang-Indonesian-English Nederlands-Indonesisch woordenboek Susi Moeimam and Hein Steinhauer Edited by V. Lieberman and M.C. Ricklefs Scholarly reference works on the histories and cultures of Southeast Asia. U.B. Samely and R.H. Barnes, with the assistance of A. Sio Amuntoda and M. Suda Apelabi A Dictionary of the Kedang Language presents the first extensive published record of an Austronesian language on the remote Eastern Indonesian island of Lembata. A special interest of the dictionary resides in the fact that Kedang lies on the boundary line between Austronesian and Papuan languages in Eastern Indonesia. The Kedang entries are translated first into Indonesian and then into English. For ease of access, finder lists are provided in Indonesian and in English. The Introduction situates the language linguistically and sketches the phonology and morphology, as well as the pairing (dyadic sets) in ritual and everyday usage of items of vocabulary characteristic of Kedang. Originally a KITLV Press Publication, this volume is now available in Brill s Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 3 Southeast Asia series. Pointy Shoes and Pith Helmets A Traveler in Siam in the Year 1655 Verzamelaars en volksopvoeders Dress and Identity Construction in Ambon from 1850 to 1942 Marianne Hulsbosch Drawing on extensive research, Hulsbosch explores dress and adornment of the Ambonese people of the Central Maluku Islands, in Indonesia, during the last century of Dutch colonial rule. She demonstrates how visual identity formation is a lived experience and an active, constant innovation that is not only a response to society, but simultaneously drives and shapes society. This long overdue text documents sartorial expression of the colonizer (the Dutch) and the colonized (the Ambonese) and investigates previously ignored history of indigenous and Western women living in a colonial context. This book is a visual feast designed and written to appeal to scholars and the general public alike. Extracts from the Journal of Gijsbert Heeck Translated and edited by Barend Jan Terwiel Gijsbert Heeck (1619-1669) was a medicinal specialist who served the Dutch East India Company (VOC). His journal, written more than three hundred and fifty years ago, is based on the daily notes he made during his third trip to the East. This volume presents the selections from his journal that deal with Siam, accompanied by the original Dutch text. This publication is the initiative of a group of Dutch and Thai scholars who intend to provide access to important Dutch texts about Siam from the VOC period by translating them into English along with a transcript of the original Dutch text. Heeck s journal was chosen for the strength of its observations of mid-seventeenth century Siam. Transcribed from the handwritten Dutch manuscript by Renée Hoogenraad. Published with Silkworm Books. The End of Innocence? Indonesian Islam and the Temptations of Radicalism De gouverneurs van de Nederlandse Antillen sinds 1815 Tropenstijl Amusement en verstrooiing in de (post)koloniale pers STAND-ALONE TITLES 34 Remy Madinier and Andree Feillard Translated by Wong Wee Long cited as a model of harmonious cohabitation between different religions, the most populous Muslim country in the world until recently occupied a special place in the Western imagination. Indonesia, home to a peaceful version of Islam, offered a reassuring counter-model to a rowdy and accusatory Arab Islam. Since 1999, however, confrontations between Christians and Muslims in the Moluccas, excesses of vigilantism in Sulawesi, and espcially the Bali and Jakarta bombings have shattered these simplistic stereotypes. For many terrorism experts often selfproclaimed Indonesia s mutation confirmed the hackneyed thesis that equated obscurantism with Islam, and saw violent outbreaks as an inevitable consequence. The End of Innocence? is far removed from the hollow analyses underlying this essentialist thesis. The book positions the evolution of Indonesian Islam in the broader context of the recent history of the archipelago, and provides a rigorous analysis of the origins and causes of the radical temptation, deciphering its simplistic ideology and showing how it has been nourished by political manipulation. Edited by Gerard Termorshuizen With a foreword by Thom Hoffman Ontspanning en vermaak onder de Europeanen in de Nederlandse overzeese gebiedsdelen waren beperkt.
