University Press Scholarship Online You are looking at 1-10 of 27 items for: keywords : environment Being-in-Creation: Human Responsibility in an Endangered World Brian Treanor, Bruce Benson, and Norman Wirzba (eds) Published in print: 2015 Published Online: January 2016 ISBN: eisbn: fordham/ What is the proper relationship between human beings and the morethan-human world? This philosophical question, which underlies vast environmental crises, forces us to investigate the tension between our extraordinary powers, which seem to set us apart from nature, even above it, and our thoroughgoing ordinariness, as revealed by the evolutionary history we share with all life. The contributors to this volume ask us to consider whether the anxiety of unheimlichkeit, which in one form or another absorbed so much of twentieth-century philosophy, might reveal not our homelessness in the cosmos but a need for a fundamental belongingness and implacement in it. War after Death: On Violence and Its Limits Steven Miller Published in print: 2014 Published Online: September 2014 ISBN: eisbn: fordham/ This book considers forms of violence that regularly occur in actual wars but do not often factor into the stories we tell about war, which revolve invariably around killing and death. Recent history demonstrates that body counts are more necessary than ever, but the fact remains that war and death is only part of the story an essential but ultimately subordinate part. Beyond killing, there is no war without attacks upon the built environment, ecosystems, personal property, artworks, archives, and intangible traditions. Destructive as it may be, such violence is difficult to classify because it does not pose a grave threat to human lives. Nonetheless, the book argues that destruction of the nonhuman or nonliving is a constitutive dimension of all violence especially forms Page 1 of 5
of extreme violence against the living such as torture and rape; and it examines how the language and practice of war are transformed when this dimension is taken into account. Finally, the book offers a rethinking of psychoanalytic approaches to war and the theory of the death drive that underlies them. On Earth As In Heaven: Ecological Vision and Initiatives of John Chryssavgis (ed.) fordham/ No worldwide Church leader has been as internationally recognized for his dynamic leadership and initiatives in addressing the theological, ethical, and practical imperative in relation to the critical environmental issues of our time as His All Holiness. has long placed the environment at the head of his Church's agenda by developing ecological programs, chairing Pan-Orthodox gatherings and international symposia, and organizing environmental seminars for more than a decade. This book demonstrates just why His All Holiness has been dubbed the Green Patriarch by Al Gore and the media. This third and final volume of the spiritual leader's selected writings showcases his statements on environmental degradation, global warming, and climate change. It contains numerous speeches and interviews in various circumstances, including ecological symposia, academic seminars, and regional and international events, over the first twenty years of his ministry. The book also encompasses a selection of pastoral letters and exhortations ecclesiastical, ecumenical, and academic by His All Holiness for occasions such as Easter and Christmas, honorary doctorates, and academic awards. How Is the Harbor Doing? John Waldman in Heartbeats in the Muck: The History, Sea Life, and Environment of New York Harbor, Revised Edition Published in print: Published Online: May 2013 ISBN: eisbn: fordham/ Page 2 of 5
The state of the environment of New York Harbor is very different from its pre-colonial condition but it has recovered to a reasonable level of ecological functionality. Its legacy of polluted sediments remains but is slowly improving, as are other indicators of overall ecological health. The Harbor also has been rediscovered as a recreational and educational amenity. Introduction fordham/ The introduction provides an overview of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's life and vision as well as initiatives and activities over the last two decades. It includes a summary of Orthodox theology and the environment. Orthodox Theology and the Environment: General Addresses fordham/ This chapter contains various addresses by at universities, symposia, conferences, environmental organizations, and think-tanks. It also includes articles in several journals and newspapers. Nature and Cosmos: Beauty and Harmony of Creation fordham/ Page 3 of 5
This chapter contains addresses on the beauty and harmony of creation by at various award ceremonies, universities, symposia, churches, cities, and events. Speaking the Truth in Love: Theological and Spiritual Exhortations of John Chryssavgis and Dr. Rowan Williams (eds) Published in print: 2010 Published Online: March 2011 ISBN: eisbn: fso/ His All Holiness has made it his mission to foster ecumenical relations and religious tolerance, as well as to promote global human rights and protect the environment. His message has always been to speak the truth in love. This book is the second in a series of three volumes collecting the writings and statements of the spiritual leader. In particular, it represents the broad reach and spiritual depth of the Patriarch's message of inter-christian communication and ecumenical understanding. Within this book, His All Holiness boldly challenges the taboos and controversies swirling within religious doctrine, addressing such issues as church unity, papal primacy, and divisions within Christianity. Subverting the Biblical World: Sociology and Politics in the Book of Ruth André LaCocque in Scrolls of Love: Ruth and the Song of Songs Published in print: 2006 Published Online: March 2011 ISBN: eisbn: fso/ It is essential that one reads Ruth in the light of a complex social environment that in many ways the book is reacting against. This means taking into account the status of women in ancient Israel and, more broadly, the ancient Near East. It also means considering the status of foreigners within these same surroundings. Both issues become especially intense in a tale whose title character is both female and foreign. In general, it can be said that from the point of view of sociology and religion, a woman's condition was marked by her dependency on men, especially in the realms of the cult and warfare. The book also Page 4 of 5
highlights the difficult choices made by the teller of Ruth's tale. Against the odds, she created a heroine who refutes the prejudice against Moabites and presents an image of strength in vulnerability. Systems, Games, and the Player: Did We Manage to Become Human? Henry Sussman in Around the Book: Systems and Literacy Published in print: 2010 Published Online: September 2011 ISBN: eisbn: fordham/ Play may well emerge as one of the most productive rubrics under which to group the possibilities and strategies for assessing the give, resistance, or openness conditioning the overarchingness or inevitability that often seems to characterize systematization. Play in a universe marked by the augmented scope, efficiency, virtuality, interconnectivity, and selectivity of systems, is not merely an optional feature, but a matter of life and death. On the other hand, systems' debts to their surrounding environments are therefore considerable. The relationship between a system and its environment is therefore specific, yet it evolves in a climatic or meteorological sense, one therefore susceptible to the sort of turbulence that was tracked with such gusto and persistence by Edward Lorenz. Moreover, under the aegis of modernism painfully aware of the incipient systematic outreach and dimensions of communications and social administration, the player emerges as a photo-critic.
