Worked with coalitions of bar associations, other non-profits, and private attorneys to seek improvement of the immigration courts and the conditions of immigration detention. Where necessary, pursued affirmative litigation on behalf of immigrants held in unreasonably prolonged detention. See, e.g., Aceves-Santos v. Sedlock, No. 08 CV 4550, 2008 WL 5101348 (N.D. Ill. Dec. 2, 2008); Cesar v. Achim, 542 F. Supp. 2d 897 (E.D. Wis. 2008); Hussain v. Mukasey, 510 F.3d 739 (7th Cir. 2007). Drafted amicus briefs in cases of strategic importance to immigrants. See, e.g., Bayo v. Napolitano, 593 F.3d 495 (7th Cir. 2010) (en banc) (amicus brief setting out a position concerning the rights of entrants under the Visa Waiver Program that the Court largely adopted). OFFICE OF THE STATE APPELLATE DEFENDER Nov. 2003-Aug. 2004 Assistant Defender, Chicago, IL Represented indigent criminal defendants in state court appeals. Obtained relief for clients including the reversal of a conviction, the vacatur of a summary dismissal of a post-conviction petition, and the vacatur of a sentence. SARGENT SHRIVER NATIONAL CENTER ON POVERTY LAW Sept. 2002-Oct. 2003 Staff Attorney, Chicago, IL Represented relocated public housing residents in a civil rights class action, Wallace v.
