Presents Attix5 Technology An Introduction January 2013
1. Global Block Level Deduplication. Attix5 Feature Top 10 Things That Matter When Attix5 is first installed on a target server a full backup is processed. This is the first and last time a traditional full backup is required. All subsequent backups are at the block and/or binary level. This has significant impact on keeping the daily rate of change very low, on average 1% or less since any duplicate blocks of data which would have been backed up (up to 80% reduction on the client side) are only extracted and stored once. Attix5 is clever enough to know that when hash tags across multiple servers are the same there will be only a single copy stored on the storage platform. Dedupe also occurs across all storage platforms. We call this single instance storage. Below is a sample depiction of storage utilization for 1 year of data maintained on disk. Stage2Data disk to disk performance: SIZE MATTERS The Numbers 500 TB compresses down to 250 TB 1% rate of change daily basis = 5 TB daily rate of change 30 Full Daily, 11Full monthly = 41Retentained copies 40 deduped retentions x 5 TB = 200 TB Original Data 250 TB + 200 TB = 450 TB / 1 year of backups The Impact Reduce backup windows Accelerate recovery times Minimize storage costs Free up IT staff time Lower administrative costs Control Scaling costs Enable disaster preparedness Address retention requirements Ensure data privacy Reduce risk in remote locations Minimize downtime costs

Binary Patching. Binary Patching is an agent side deduplication technique which searches for changes beyond the block level. It s very useful when you have limited bandwidth and want to get data offsite for disaster recovery. Instead of sending changes at 32kb, or more, Attix5 can send byte level changes. Binary Patching is so refined that it still makes backing up over a 256K dial-up connection possible. This is perfect for those remote sites sitting on the edge of your network.

The system has 6 levels of very intuitive throttling and each of the settings can be applied to any time slot during the week providing over 1000 possible settings. Other systems, if this feature is available, typically only have one setting which can only be applied to one time period. 4. Active-Active Mirroring. Storage Servers (vaults) can simultaneously receive and replicate (mirror) data to other storage servers in an active-active-active configuration to provide multiple levels of redundancy. This is a very critical feature for businesses with user data in multiple locations since data only has to travel once over the slow network (WAN) regardless of where the data resides. Most other systems only have one direction replication which means some data may have to travel multiple times over the slow network.

Enterprise Reporting. First-class reporting saves hundreds of annual person-hours by providing well defined, easy to understand information to users which enable them to quickly analyze backup results and resolve issues quickly. Other systems typically provide email notifications which become very cumbersome to manage if there are many servers to backup. Attix5 includes 40 canned reports and custom reports can be created using SQL scripts. 6. Auto Deploy & Agent Auto Update. For clients with many servers that have the same backup policies you can pre-configure the software agent and automatically deploy the agent across the network. Many solutions require manual updating systems with new software which wastes hundreds of annual person-hours. Attix5 s auto update feature dramatically reduces the time needed to upgrade systems. 7. No Forklift Upgrades. When you require expansion, many solutions require that you upgrade to the next tier Appliance or higher capacity tape technology, which usually means retiring the current system and purchasing a newer, bigger system. Not Attix5. You have the flexibility to expand on what you already own and scale out as you grow with incremental upgrades. 8. Double Hash Checking. The majority of solutions rely on a single hash for deduplication and that can lead to hash collisions which cause data corruption. Attix5 uses an industry leading double hash checking process. With this
approach if user data is changed and backed up every second of every day, then in 10 billion years the risk for a collision would still be less than 1 in 1000 trillion. 9. Highest Level of Security in Flight in the industry. Attix5 secures data with military grade private key AES 256 bit encryption. The communication session between the agent and the storage platform is with SSL 1024 Bit encryption. 10. Support 24/7 Across North America. Around the clock support is included. 11. Bonus Feature: Speed! Attix5 is very fast. Up to 185 MB per second for backup and restore processing. The preceding is a sample of what our customers benefit by adopting Attix5. But there is more. Included in Attix5 is the ability to configure virtually any type of retention policy. HSM is built-in to Attix5 to allow users to retain data indefinitely. With Attix5 every backup is a full backup. When it comes time to restore data there is no requirement for full/incremental/differential resolution. The combination of block/byte level processing and processing speed will significantly reduce your backup window. With Block/byte level backups combined with bandwidth throttling you will be able to schedule multiple backup sessions per day for critical systems with little to no impact to your network. For example, a 1 TB server will require less than 1% of changed data, or about 10 GB, to perform a full backup. This will enhance your RTO and RPO objectives.
