The 2005-2006 fee rates apply to all students (but see below note 2) who commence a new year or other period of study on or after 1 August 2005. Fees are subject to annual revision and are due in full at registration. The payment of fees is the responsibility of the student and, in the event of a student s sponsoring authority (if any) failing to make payment, the student will be held personally liable for payment. Annual, programme and course fees cover matriculation, tuition and one diet of examination. They include an element in respect of membership of University unions, sports facilities, and other student facilities and amenities. Matriculated students who are not required to pay an annual, programme or course fee should contact the Students Association about associate membership. 3

2. Full-time students domiciled, as defined by the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS), in Scotland or in other European Union countries outside the United Kingdom, will not be required to make a personal contribution towards the costs of their annual tuition if they are studying at publicly funded institutions in Scotland for the first time. The Scottish Executive will pay all such tuition fees through SAAS. Full-time students must apply to SAAS for the payment of their tuition fees, even if they are not applying for any other means of support. Details of application procedures are available from SAAS, Gyleview House, 3 Redheughs Rigg, South Gyle, Edinburgh, EH12 9HH; telephone 0845 111 1711; website http://www.student-support-saas.gov.uk/. 3. Students are advised that they should be certain of their fee status before registering. Further information and advice on the Definition of an Overseas Student for Fee Purposes is available from the Registry, and the Definition is published in the University s Undergraduate Prospectus. 4. Every effort has been made to ensure that this information is accurate at the time of going to press. For up to date information relating to tuition fees, or for advice on the contents of this leaflet, please contact: The Scholarships and Student Finance Fees Team, Registry, Old College, South Bridge, Edinburgh, EH8 9YL; telephone enquiry number: 0131 650 2230 (+ 44 131 650 2230); departmental fax: 0131 651 4066; e-mail address: Fees@ed.ac.uk; web address: http://www.registry.ed.ac.uk/student/fees/fees.htm. 5. In terms of Resolution of the University Court no. 7/1982, students in debt to the University may not be permitted to re-matriculate in future sessions, nor to graduate, if eligible to do so until the outstanding sum has been cleared. 6. Withdrawal from the University: At the discretion of the University, a refund of tuition fees may be made to students who withdraw from a programme with appropriate academic approval. Normally, any fee refunded will be derived from attendance for all or part of a semester and the application of an administrative charge. Students who withdraw during the first semester will be liable for 60% of the annual tuition fees. If a student withdraws during the second semester, he/she will be liable for payment of the full session fees for the programme of studies and will not be entitled to a refund. STUDENTS ON FIRST DEGREE PROGRAMMES (i.e. excluding visiting students) 7. Veterinary Medicine: visiting and full-fee students (whether home/eu or overseas) should contact the Veterinary Medicine School Office in the first instance for advice. 8. Year course and semester course fee rates are available to UK/EU visiting students, but only if they have been admitted from the outset to take only a year course or semester course. Such students taking courses totalling in excess of 80 credits will be charged the applicable full-time fee. All other visiting students are liable for the annual fee (or the appropriate proportion thereof if admitted for one semester only). Year course and semester course fee rates are available to graduating students, but only in respect of an additional or repeated year of study. 9. Overseas undergraduate students spending a year studying or working abroad as a prescribed part of an undergraduate degree programme will be charged a reduced fee of. Overseas undergraduates who have secured college approval for spending a voluntary year studying abroad, that is recognised as counting towards their undergraduate degree programme, will be charged a fee of half of the full overseas fee for that year. 10. UK/EU students spending a year working, on industrial placement or studying abroad as an optional part of an undergraduate degree programme will be charged a reduced fee of 570. 11. A matriculation fee of 60 is payable by undergraduate students who require to register for the purposes of examination only, and are not in attendance. 12. A late matriculation fee of 45 will be charged to students who register after the due date without reasonable cause. 13. A fee of 40 is payable prior to first graduation for registration as a member of the General Council. OVERSEAS VISITING STUDENTS 14. Full time overseas visiting students studying for one semester will be charged fees at half of the full year overseas fee rate. Full time overseas visiting students who intend to study for the whole academic session will be offered a 500 discount. This discount is already reflected in the full session calculation in the above table of fees. HOME VISITING STUDENTS 4

15. Home visiting students admitted to full time study for one semester only will be charged a semester rate, which is 50% of the corresponding full time rate. ANNUAL REVISION OF FEES 16. Fees are subject to annual revision. However, the University will do all it reasonably can to keep fee increases for students in their second and subsequent years of study broadly in line with inflationary increases in the University s costs. 5

PAYMENT ARRANGEMENTS For self-financing students (including students who are partly self-funding) fees are due in full at registration. However, students attending the University for the full session may request to pay tuition fees in three instalments by credit card or direct debit.
