Computer Related Computers for Beginners This is an introductory level course for the new computer user. Basic skills will be taught: how to turn on a computer, use a mouse, surf the web, type a letter, use email, etc. Review parts of a computer. Learn how to send and open email attachments. Learn the very basic skills to using your computer through this hands-on course. Meets M 5:00-8:00 PM 30 Hrs - $150 Beginner Microsoft Office 2010 This course provides an overall introduction to the Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs of the Office suite. This course is hands-on, providing the learner with the practice to develop proficiencies in the MS Office programs. Meets T 5:30-8:30 PM 30 Hrs - $150 + Book Personal Enrichment Beginner Cake Decorating Ever had the desire to learn the art of cake decorating? If you have then this is the class for you. During this class you will learn how to bake a great cake, level and torte, use decorating bags and tips and how to color icing. The following techniques will be taught: borders, drop flowers, roses and leaves. We will also learn how to fill and decorate cupcakes and cookies. Piping Gel, Fondant, and Gum along with how to transfer a picture will also be taught. You will learn many techniques, how to use different tools and how to make a beautiful cake for any occasion. You will have the opportunity to bring a cake, cupcakes, or cookies to class and take home a completed project. Meets T 5:30-8:00 PM 20 Hrs - $125 + Materials Advanced Cake Decorating NEW Learn a whole new way to decorate a cake, make flowers and three dimensional decorations with fondant. You will learn step by step how to create floral blooms and floral sprays out of gum paste, even the breathtaking star gazer lily. Meets Th 5:30-8:00 PM 20 Hrs - $125 + Materials The Joy of Drawing Ever had a desire to be able to draw? This newly extended class is for you! First time students as well as advanced artists will find something to challenge and enjoy. The Three P s of Drawing principles will provide the foundation for the class. Demonstrations in pencil, charcoal, pen & ink and colored pencil, as well as studies in calligraphy, perspective and composition are included. Handouts will be provided, and our goal is to have drawings suitable for framing, creation of you own greeting/ Christmas cards and other personalized projects completed at the end of the 10 week course. Class members enjoy a relaxed environment, much encouragement and pleasant camaraderie. Come Join us! Suggested materials: a multi-purpose sketch pad, a few pencils, eraser (a kneaded eraser is also recommended) and a straight edge (ruler). Together we will learn the basic techniques of piecing the quilt top, layering the quilt and then machine or hand quilting your creation. Being cost conscious of materials and tools you will finish class with a Lap Quilt. You will need a Sewing Machine in good working order and the sewing machine manual. Medical Medical Billing and Coding Program This combined 80 hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-9 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures. The course covers the following areas: CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), ICD-9 (Introduction and Guidelines) and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third party reimbursements. Students will learn how to find the service and codes using manuals, (CPT, ICD-9, and HCPCS). After obtaining the practical work experience (6 months to 2 years), students who complete this course could be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) - Certified Professional Coders Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA Exam); and/or other National Certifications Exams. Meets M & TH 6:00-9:30 PM - 80 Hrs - $1799 Textbooks included Classes Start February 10, 2014 Pharmacy Technician Program This comprehensive 50 hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board's PTCB exam. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusions pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings - working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. Meets M & TH 6:00-9:30 PM - 50 Hrs $999 Textbooks included Classes Start February 24, 2014 Nurse Aide The Nurse Aide Program is designed to teach students the duties of a nursing assistant and how to perform these duties. Includes 65 hours of classroom instruction and 55 hours of clinical experience. Clinical experience will be conducted at a long-term care facility on the weekend/day shift. This course will also prepare the student to sit for PA Nurse Aide Registry. Applicants must have a Pennsylvania State Police-Criminal Record Check which will be done online through Admiral Peary AVTS. If not a resident of PA for two full years prior to the date of application, applicant must also have an FBI report. Reports must be submitted prior to the start of class. A non-refundable $10 check made payable to APAVTS for background check must be submitted with registration. Additional cost for State Examination, Uniform, Physical and Book. Physical must be completed before start of class. Trade And Industrial Automotive Safety Inspection Certification Offered in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to certify successful completers as Safety Inspection Mechanics. Certification Categories Offered: Category I-Passenger, Category II-Motorcycles, Category III-Heavy Trucks. Students must register in person at the school and have a VALID PA Driver's license. Tuition includes written baseline test, one written category test, and one tactile test. Tactile test will be scheduled with the Instructor. Meets M & W 5:00-8:30 PM - 60 Hrs - $300 + Materials Construction Electricity This course is designed to meet the skill and knowledge required to properly wire homes and small industrial installations. The electrical code will be followed throughout the course with emphasis placed on assembly, testing, and maintenance of electrical fixtures, apparatus, and lights. Meets M & W 5:30-8:30 PM - 60 Hrs - $325 + HVAC Heating/Cooling Fundamentals II ** Prerequisite: HVAC I or prior work experience in HVAC This class will cover Service hookups and installation of residential and light commercial air conditioning. Also covered will be heat pumps and commercial refrigeration service procedures (cooler and freezer applications). All instruction includes charging, evacuation, piping and principal components instruction. Air Duct Delivery Design will also be included. This course will enable students to take the EPA Refrigerant Usage Certification Test at the end of the class. Meets M & W 5:00-8:00 PM - 45 Hrs - $225 $100 EPA Refrigerant and Usage Certification Test (optional) HVAC Heating/Cooling Fundamentals I will be offered in the Fall Small Engine Repair Students will be introduced to the workings of a 2 cycle small engine. They will be given an introduction of carburetors, electronic and distributive ignition systems. Instruction will also train students in troubleshooting various types of engines such as weed eaters, snow blowers, lawn mowers etc. All aspects of this course will be geared towards the EETC accreditation. Adult students will receive training in their respective program over the Nine (9) month period which will enable them to receive a certificate of completion from Admiral Peary AVS. Registration Deadline: Registrations must be received by January 31, 2014 Any individual 18 years of age and over may enroll in night classes unless otherwise notified by Admiral Peary AVTS. How to Register: In Person: The office is located on the upper floor of the school. Hours are from 8:30 AM until 3:00 PM Tuesday through Thursday. By Mail: Complete a Registration Form and mail it along with the correct payment to: Admiral Peary AVTS Office of Lifelong Learning 948 Ben Franklin Hwy Ebensburg, PA 15931 Registration Fee: Fees must be paid at the time of registration. Books will be purchased the first night of class. Class Schedule: Most classes start the week of February 10, 2014 unless otherwise indicated. Canceled Courses: Courses are subject to minimum enrollment requirements. Admiral Peary AVTS reserves the right to cancel any course due to insufficient enrollment. If your course is canceled, you will receive notification from the School before the class is scheduled to start. You may change from your canceled course to one that is not canceled, or you may receive a full refund. This can be done either by phone or in person. Refund Policy: Students who withdraw from a course prior to the first night of class will receive a full refund. Students who drop a course the first night of class will be assessed a $10 (ten dollar) service fee. After the first night of class is completed, NO REFUNDS will be issued. A refund will be mailed within one month of the cancellation notice. Textbook Refund Policy: If you register for a class and a textbook is ordered for you and you drop the class before it starts it is your responsibility to pay for the textbook. Certificates: Certificate of Completion will be issued to individuals who complete 80% or more of scheduled class hours and obtain at least a satisfactory rating. However, for On-Line courses, course requirements must be satisfactorily met in order to receive a certificate. Service Charge: There will be a $20 service charge on ALL returned Checks.
