Metering solutions A complete service from the metering specialists We were one of the first major UK supply companies to introduce a fully automated metering solution and we continue to develop our metering products and services. A combination of the latest meters with our powerful monitoring and targeting software could help give you control of your energy consumption. Choose npower as your meter operator and we ll aim to provide you with a high quality, comprehensive, integrated data management service. We re fully accredited to install and maintain your meter (Meter Operation), and we work with all suppliers and agents. This means that, regardless of who your energy supplier currently is, we can supply, install, operate and maintain all of your half hourly (HH) metering and communications equipment. As specialists in half hourly meter operations for the industrial and commercial sectors, our Energy Services Team is fully accredited to perform Meter Operation, Data Collection and Data Aggregation services. Automated Metering Reading Traditionally, only sites with half hourly metering equipment have been able to benefit from regular actual meter readings. Now, through our AMR solution, more customers can take advantage of this level of information for both electricity and gas. AMR delivers the superior level of information you need help to reduce the time, effort and cost involved in managing your energy. Secondary metering With secondary metering you could achieve highly targeted energy efficiency improvements to your business by monitoring the specific consumption of individual premises, production areas, departments or even machines. Being able to understand the patterns of consumption for specified activities and equipment in this way allows you to identify the least energy efficient areas of the business, and focus your development programmes on theses. We offer: Full national coverage and guaranteed service levels The very latest in metering and communications technology Dedicated project management by qualified engineers Accurate billing data Regular maintenance checks Resolution of faults Choice of leased or purchased equipment Once you ve chosen the metering solution that s best for you, we ll work with you every step of the way to manage the installation programme. Case study secondary metering, 80 Strand One of the most iconic buildings along the River Thames, 80 Strand, recently partnered with us to help reduce its energy consumption and improve efficiency. Built in 1930, the art deco landmark was originally home to Shell-Mex and BP Ltd but now houses a range of organisations over 12 floors. As part of an ongoing energy management plan, 80 Strand s management company set about understanding when and where energy was being used in the building. We carried out an initial survey to understand the specific requirements and challenges posed by the site. As a result, the installation of 140 secondary meters across the 500 square feet of office space was recommended to provide specific data on energy consumption throughout the building. In addition to secondary metering, we also introduced our monitoring and targeting software, encompass. By providing detailed energy consumption data and vital management information across business premises, encompass can help identify energy waste. Heating unoccupied offices or powering redundant vending machines are typical examples of waste which encompass could help identify, enabling energy-saving measures to be implemented as a result. 4 5

Monitoring and targeting We offer two high performance energy management tools for customers to chose from Energy Snapshot Exclusive to Energy Assist customers who have also signed up for renewable energy supply, Energy Snapshot is a clever online tool that summarises the performance of multiple sites against predefined targets. It s designed for businesses with up to 10 sites and will help you to personalise these performance indicators to highlight the data that s most important to you. Example Snapshot measures: energy consumption vs a target set by you carbon emissions vs target cost vs budget encompass Designed for our bigger business customers, energy consumption data from either your half-hourly meters or non half-hourly AMR meters across your business is automatically sent to encompass where you can monitor the performance of multiple sites simultaneously. Other utilities, such as gas and water, can also be included, and with this profile data loaded and saved, you have information to help you make informed decisions about cutting your energy use and potentially saving money. With encompass s personalised dashboard screen you can analyse consumption data and generate reports to suit your individual criteria. Different users in the same organisation can similarly customise their screens, and rights can also be tailored so that each user only sees the information they need. Consumption targets specific to your business can be set at a portfolio, site or meter level, and you can even set up alerts to inform you of discrepancies in usage to help you to quickly take corrective action to reduce your energy consumption. Key Reports There are over 80 saved reports in encompass, including: - Active Power - Power Factor - Active Periods - Project/Site Tracking Active Power The Active Power report is a key report for energy management as it shows what you re consuming in kwh allowing you to see what your sites are using for every half hour of every day. This may help identify where potential savings could be made for example having a high base load, or inconsistent consumption throughout the day. Power Factor Power Factor is a measure of electrical efficiency in an AC power system and is a ratio of real power and apparent power in a circuit. Having a low power factor draws more current (electrical energy) than a load with a high power factor. This means that customers with a low power factor pay more overall for energy compared to customers with a good power factor. encompass allows you to view your power factor, helping identify any sites where the power factor is below a satisfactory level. Example of a Power Factor graph Energy Snapshot dashboard Thanks to a range of options: encompass analyst, encompass manager or encompass professional, you can choose the functionality that best suits your business. Whether you just need basic reporting or sophisticated multi-utility forecasting, encompass helps provide a solution for you. Half hourly interval data Active Periods encompass allows you to input details on your sites, such as square meterage, output and open and closed hours. The Active Period report looks at your energy consumption against when your site is open (active) or closed (inactive) to help identify energy wastage when your site is closed. encompass - helping you understand your energy use Compare consumption against opening hours 6 7

Monitoring and targeting Project/Site Tracker The Project/Site Tracker tool is an extremely useful tool for energy management. Not only does it help you monitor how successful an energy management project has been for your site or project, but it also can be used to monitor your progress against forecasted consumption, or a pre-selected reduction target. It allows you to easily and effectively monitor your energy management performance, and helps highlight the impact energy management initiatives are having on your organisation s energy consumption. Case study - encompass, TS Ferrybridge Industrial manufacturing businesses can often be intensive users of electricity. One such customer back in 2008 was using nearly 3GWh of electricity at a cost of around 350,000 a year. With these sorts of costs and rising energy prices a project was set up to try to reduce cost. The first step was to set up encompass to give clear visibility of usage. Immediately one thing was obvious the size of the base load. encompass showed around 60% of the electricity use was in the base load. This pattern is typical when appliances are left running all of the time, even when no one is working. Consumption Cumulative savings encompass helped the project team identify where electricity was being used and more importantly where it was being wasted. By turning equipment off at specific times, they were able to see which areas were consuming the most energy. As the energy saving measures were implemented they found that they could see the results of these changes in the graphs produced by encompass. The graphs below show the changes in baseload. We conducted energy audits as part of a system and equipment upgrades service. Using the recommendations from the audits, this customer: Initially the audits predicted a reduction in energy consumption of around 14%. April 2011 was a record low month with a saving of 40% on April 2008. Then Replaced 108 x 400W SON lights in the workshops with modern efficient equivalents, which use half the energy. Installed a Building Management System (BMS) to optimise heating and lighting requirements. This included splitting down larger areas onto separate control switches with timers, so only the areas that required heat or light were turned on. Fitted occupancy sensors to automatically turn lights on and off in offices and corridors as required. The annual first year saving was 13% compared to 2008, and just below the forecasted reduction of 14%. 2010 was less successful, with a cold winter increasing consumption towards the end of the year, however consumption was still 9% lower annually than 2008 levels. 2011 was the most successful year; to date with a 20% annual reduction versus 2008, which is equal to around an annual saving of 80k. The capital cost for the implementation of these projects was 130k and through the resultant savings in energy costs, the payback period was less than 3 years. Now Installed nine 6m x 3m windows in the large workshop area to make use of natural light. This minimised the need for electric lights during the day and also created a more pleasant working environment. 8 9

Mechanical and electrical installations We have the capability to design, fund, manage and install core mechanical and electrical services for any public sector and commercial building Our experienced staff are able to fully design complete mechanical and electrical services for any building and consult on energy saving products, providing a complete end-to-end solution. Our services include: Full design capabilities Electrical infrastructure and small power to lighting and sockets, etc. Boiler and hot water systems (gas, oil and biomass) Heating system and air conditioning Data cabling Fire alarms Combined heat and power (CHP) Design and installation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) control systems Rain water harvesting Ductwork We use our expert knowledge to provide solutions for a client base including end users, main contractors and local authorities, on a variety of project types including design and build, fit out and refurbishment. Case study LED lighting, MRH (GB) Limited Petrol forecourt lighting is often required 24 hours a day to ensure a practical and safe environment for staff and customers. With over 350 petrol stations in the UK using more that 4,000 incandescent bulbs, MRH (GB) Limited had high energy consumption levels and a lighting and maintenance cost of around 300,000 a year. Looking to drive efficiencies in its energy use across its forecourts, MRH approached us to identify where savings could be made. With more than forty years experience of providing energy-saving solutions to businesses, we recommended replacing the incandescent bulbs in the petrol station canopies with LED counterparts. Once the site surveys, lighting calculations and designs were completed, we organised the production and installation of all the relevant light fittings on a site by site basis. This involved coordinating each survey site design with the relevant production requirements, while also ensuring installation dates were met. The results: energy costs are expected to reduce by almost 90%, saving the company some 260,000 each year. Before installation After installation 10 11

Repair and maintenance High quality servicing and maintenance not only helps extend the life of equipment, it also ensures compliance with health and safety regulations We undertake repair and maintenance services for local authorities and businesses, including refurbishment of schools, office blocks and public buildings. We can install and service complete heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, as well as sophisticated controlled climate and energy saving systems. Our maintenance contracts can cover: Plant room Industrial gas mains Electrical Ducting and ventilation Welded pipe work Air conditioning Chiller units Extracting equipment In addition we offer 24 hour emergency call out and reactive repairs. Planned preventive maintenance (PPM) We work with our clients to achieve the best possible solution to their planned maintenance scheduling. Our engineering knowledge means we can ensure that original equipment manufacturers (OEM) recommendations, best practice and equipment performance are all taken into account when compiling and maintaining the schedule. Centralised logging of asset details enables us to review the PPM system and asset performance, and compile replacement cost forecasts for the client when required. 12 13

Renewable heating and energy We can offer a full design and installation service for a number of renewable technologies including biomass, ground and air source heat pumps and solar PV Biomass A boiler is installed in place of the existing fossil fuel appliance. This new boiler burns woodchip, which is a far more efficient method of providing heat whilst utilising a completely sustainable fuel supply. This has much lower carbon emissions than traditional boilers and due to its efficiency could provide the end user with cost efficiencies. Ground and air source heat pumps These units work similarly to a boiler powered by electricity. Using the same principle as air conditioning the unit provides heat taken from the air or ground, heating up the water to feed radiators or other sources. This is a very efficient way of providing heating and is especially useful where other fuels are either not available or are too expensive. Solar photovoltaic (PV) and thermal panels Solar PV panels work by acting as a semi-conductor that converts daylight into electricity. Where the demand is less than supply from the PV system any spare electricity can be sold back as export under the Feed in Tariff scheme. Solar thermal panels use the heat from the sun to warm water, that can then be used to heat homes, offices, etc. A conventional boiler or immersion heater can then be used to further heat the water or provide hot water when solar energy is unavailable. We re also able to provide breakdown and maintenance services for all these products, including 24 hour cover. A biomass boiler in action An example of a ground source heat pump Case study solar PV, Birmingham Airport Birmingham Airport is the 5th largest in the UK, serving over 9 million customers a year. Travelling with a number of different airlines, both domestic and international. As a large energy user Birmingham Airport was keen to reduce it s carbon footprint. In partnership with us, Birmingham Airport has installed a 50kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system to generate renewable electricity on site and reduce the airport s dependency on electricity from the National Grid. The installation of the 200 solar PV panels is the first step in a larger project to improve energy management on the airport site. Paul Kehoe, the airport s CEO, said: It s exciting for the airport to present such a visible commitment to energy reduction. Managing our greenhouse gas emissions is a high priority for the company and we re always seeking new opportunities to work with partners to reduce our carbon footprint. Between October and December 2011, npower completed full site surveys, detailed designs, installation and commissioning. The 200 solar PV panels installed on the terminal roof will save Birmingham Airport 22 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. The 1.6m x 1m panels will generate 40,000 kwh of electricity annually, which is sufficient to power twelve average sized houses. An added benefit is the government s Feed in Tariff (FiT) scheme. The FiT scheme enables businesses to receive a fixed payment (generation tariff) from the government for electricity they generate from renewable sources such as solar panels and wind turbines. For every kwh they export to the National Grid, they receive an additional payment (export tariff). These payments are in addition to bill savings made by using self-generated electricity. It s exciting for the Airport to present such a visible commitment to energy reduction. Managing our greenhouse gas emissions is a high priority for the company and we re always seeking new opportunities to work with partners to reduce our carbon footprint. Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport CEO 14 15

Electric vehicle charging points We have a clear objective of bringing electricity onto the roads, not in the future, but today Whether you re running a public electric vehicle charging network, managing your fleet of electric vehicles or providing electric vehicle charging for your employees or customers, we can tailor a solution to meet your specific needs. We ve developed a number of charging points that are suitable for use at your workplace or in public areas such as shopping centres and car parks. Our charge point management system allows you to fully control your charging points remotely and has a range of functionality that can be tailored to suit your needs. The system provides full reporting, billing, reservation, authentication, charge point management and remote operation functionality. For all potential charge point installations our highly trained engineers and electricians will initially perform a site survey to ensure that the site is suitable for the installation, and work with you to identify the best charge point solution for your needs. We ll then manage the whole process of sourcing the charge point, installation, commissioning and maintenance. Additional services for our charge points: Training (all aspects of e-mobility) Bundled EV energy packages Other energy services 16 17

Short Term Operating Reserve (STOR) Short Term Operating Reserve is one of National Grid s most important tools for securing the national electricity system in real time Private generators available for standby purposes are adapted and are held in readiness so that National Grid s control centre can start them quickly if a large power station fails, or if demand is higher than forecast. Our teams can provide a complete project management, installation, test and commissioning service for the SmartSTOR system. The STOR market has been growing in volume and value for several years, due to the reduction of flexible coal and oil electricity generation capacity, and the increase in forms of generation which require balancing, such as renewables. Under the STOR arrangements, National Grid pays a rent (availability) for STOR capacity, and pays a usage charge (utilisation) when the reserve is needed. How STOR works 1 Demand on the national electricity supply sometime pushes the system towards capacity. 2 Short Term Operating Reserve (STOR) is used to provide extra electricity for short periods. 4 Electricity provided by SmartSTOR s smart grid keeps the electricity system stable through the peak. 5 National Grid calls on SmartSTOR s smart grid to contribute electricity into STOR. 3 6 This data centre has temporarily opted out of the SmartSTOR smart grid in order to carry out essential maintenance. SmartSTOR s rapid delivery of energy can be used to balance fluctuations in renewable energy generation. This factory has automatically delayed a non critical process to reduce electricity demand. This facility has automatically taken itself off grid using its own standby generators. This supermarket has automatically turned off non essential air conditioning systems to reduce electricity demand. This CHP generator has switched on spare electricity generating capacity, and is sending excess heat to a thermal store. With SmartSTOR available to National Grid, fewer coal power stations have to be kept on hot standby. This cold storage facility has temporarily turned off its refrigeration systems which won t affect stored produce. This call centre is running its standby generators, covering its own demand and supplying excess into the distribution networks. 18 19
